Application to perform at Fresh 2016
Sat 26 March, CAST, Doncaster
Application Guidelines
FRESH 2016 and U.Dance National Youth Dance Festival 2016
This year we are working once again in collaboration, offering the exciting opportunity for your
group to apply to perform at the national U.Dance event in Salford, Manchester; a three day
extravaganza which will take place from 8-10 July 2016. Further details can be found at www.udance.org
Both U.Dance and Fresh are fully inclusive and so we warmly welcome applications from youth
dance groups working with young disabled dancers (up to the age of 25).
Fresh 2016 will not only provide an opportunity to perform on the main stage at CAST but we also
have performance opportunities in our Fresh Fringe event on the same day in the ‘Second Space’ at
CAST. This will allow us to have a wider geographical representation in order to showcase the best
of youth dance in Yorkshire.
We welcome solos / duets / trios through to group pieces, any style from contemporary to urban,
commercial to lyrical – anything goes!
CRITERIA
For Fresh 2016 (and U.Dance 2016), across both performance spaces, Yorkshire Dance is looking to
showcase dance pieces that demonstrate high quality in three main areas. All applications will be
passed onto an external panel who will select groups to perform based on these three criteria:



Demonstrate excellence in performance standards
Demonstrate integrity and authenticity of choreography
Demonstrate good technique in the specific dance style
They will also make selections which will help reflect the diversity of the sector.
We would encourage you to think about these as follows:
 Demonstrate excellence in performance standards: Our panel will be looking for
pieces that demonstrate a good understanding from the dancers of the theme or subject,
particularly through the application of high quality performance.

Demonstrate Integrity and authenticity of choreography: Whatever the dance
genre, our panel will be looking for pieces that have elements of originality or moments of
risk taking in trying out new ideas, interesting movement material, exciting use of

body/bodies in space and use of the performance space. How the piece could be staged
including; costume, music, lighting, props, etc

Technique: Good application of genre, control of body, dynamics and quality must be
demonstrated throughout the piece.
U.Dance selection
During Fresh 2016 the same selection panels will be looking for the two dance groups or individuals
that they wish to represent Yorkshire at U.Dance in Salford, Manchester.
They shall be selecting the two groups based on the following criteria:
1. Demonstrate excellence in performance standards
2. Demonstrate Integrity and authenticity of choreography
3. Are willing to give 100%
4. Demonstrate respect and consideration to all
They will also make selections which will help reflect the diversity of the sector.
HOW TO APPLY
To apply, groups need to send a completed application form and footage of their piece to Yorkshire
Dance. The deadline for both of these is Friday 15 January 2016. We do understand that some
pieces may not be fully complete, polished pieces yet, however we would like to view your piece as
near to finished as possible. Remember that the panel will be viewing this against many other
applications.
Please use the Filming your piece Dos and Don’ts to ensure that you give your group the best
possible chance of being selected.
Our selection panel of four will consist of a young person, an experienced dance practitioner, an
independent representative from the dance sector and a choreographer/dance artist with significant
experience working with young people. None of the panel will have connections to any group
submitting applications to Fresh 2016.
SELECTION
Please note that that there are limited places in each of the performance spaces. Our panel will
select pieces that demonstrate a high standard in the criteria in the following way:
The Fresh Fringe
These will be a late afternoon performance (at CAST in the second space). Groups that
demonstrate a high standard in two of the three stipulated areas will be selected to perform, taking
into consideration reflecting the diversity of the sector.
The Fresh main stage
Groups that demonstrate a high standard in all three stipulated areas will be selected to perform in
this space during the evening, taking into consideration reflecting the diversity of the sector.
Only groups selected to perform in the Main stage at CAST will be judged by a U.Dance
representative and the selection panel on Saturday 26 March 2016 with a view to the best work
regionally to be presented for at the national U.Dance event in Salford, Manchester on 8-10 July
2016. You can be considered for U.Dance 2016, or opt out and just perform in Fresh 2016. If you
