Genesis Why did God show Israel this with these three women? 10/20/10 The mother of Samson, (Child of Strength) Hannah, (Samuel was a priest) and Elisabeth, (John The Baptist was a prophet) They show character traits of Jesus! God graciously helped Israel to believe in it, facilitating faith in the Divine incarnation through these means. If God quickened a dead womb and caused it to bear, why should it be thought a thing incredible if He made the virgin give birth to the Child! (Genesis 20:1 KJV) And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar. (Genesis 20:2 KJV) And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. Sarah was 89 at the time. She must have been a looker. (Genesis 20:3 KJV) But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife. (Genesis 20:4 KJV) But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? (Genesis 20:5 KJV) Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. (Genesis 20:6 KJV) And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. (Genesis 20:7 KJV) Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine. (Genesis 20:8 KJV) Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid. 1 Genesis (Genesis 20:9 KJV) Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done. (Genesis 20:10 KJV) And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing? (Genesis 20:11 KJV) And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake. (Genesis 20:12 KJV) And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. (Genesis 20:13 KJV) And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother. (Genesis 20:14 KJV) And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife. (Genesis 20:15 KJV) And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee. (Genesis 20:16 KJV) And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved. (Genesis 20:17 KJV) So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. (Genesis 20:18 KJV) For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife. Abraham’s Mistake Not a fall of a young and inexperienced disciple; one who long walked the faith Not a question of surprise sin; but occurrence of an old sin (Gen. 12:13-20) Long ago he followed the same wicked course in Egypt; ~ 20-25 years ago Interim: 1) Built an altar unto the Lord 2) Destroyed Chedorlaomer 3) Blessed by Melchizedek 4) Repulsed the offer of the king of Sodom to be enriched at his hands 5) Experienced wondrous revelations and promises from God Now, Leaving God out of the equation 2 Genesis Fearing man Resorting to the most shameful deception Reason: Abraham had not recently been in circumstances to call into exercise the evil that was in his heart! The evil was not fully brought out. We don’t know what’s in our hearts until circumstances arise to draw it out! Peter did not imagine he could deny his Lord until he got into circumstances which showed his weakness was still there. The stress of circumstances reveals the state of Abraham’s heart, as it does ours. Easy to trust God while everything goes along pleasantly, but the time of disappointment, of loss, of persecution, or bereavement is the time of testing.. then people fall. Verse 13: Some commentators believe that he planned this when he left Ur; right after the calling. (Genesis 20:13 KJV) And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother. He dishonored the Lord in acting as he did, an evil example before the heathen. Incorporate into Chapter 21 (Genesis 18:14 KJV) Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. (Galatians 4:4 KJV) But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, (Ephesians 1:9 KJV) Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: (Ephesians 1:10 KJV) That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: (Genesis 21:1 KJV) And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken. (Genesis 21:2 KJV) For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. (Genesis 21:3 KJV) And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. 3 Genesis (Genesis 21:4 KJV) And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him. (Genesis 21:5 KJV) And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him. (Genesis 21:6 KJV) And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me. (Genesis 21:7 KJV) And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age. Who would have thought that such and such would have happened? Given the situation and circumstances, who would have thought this could happen? Who would have thought that God would do such and such? The birth of Christ was markedly foreshadowed by that of Isaac and this in seven ways at least. 1) First: Isaac was the promised seed and son (Gen. 17:16); so also was Christ (Gen. 3:15; Is. 7:14). 2) Second: a lengthy interval occurred between God's first promise to Abraham and its realization. A. When we are told, "And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said" (Gen. 21:1), original promise of 12: 7. B. So also was there a lengthy interval between God's promise to send Christ and the actual fulfillment of it. 3) Third: when Isaac's birth was announced, his mother asked, "Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?" What similarities do you see in Sarah (Gen. 18:13 – 15) and Mary (Luke 1:34-37)? (Genesis 18:13 KJV) And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Answer: (Genesis 18:14 KJV) Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. (Galatians 4:4 KJV) But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 4 Genesis (Genesis 18:15 KJV) Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh. Sarah, poor thing, lied and said she did not laugh. But they corrected her! She still was heralded as a woman of faith. The church chooses to crucify people when they lie; how hypocritical!! No license to lie but God forgives and still uses her because of her faith. Similar situation with Mary: (Luke 1:34 KJV) Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? Answer: (Luke 1:37 KJV) For with God nothing shall be impossible. Fourth: Isaac’s name was specified before he was born. (Gen. 17:19) “And thou shall call his name Isaac. Angel told Joseph before Christ was born: And thou shall call His name Jesus. Fifth: Isaac’s birth occurred at God’s appointed time. (Gen. 21:2) (at the set time) But when the fullness of time was come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman. (Gal. 4:4) Sixth: Isaac’s birth required a miracle to bring about. So was the incarnation of Immanuel. Seventh: Isaac means Laughter declared him to be his father’s delight! Jesus: In whom I am well pleased! (Genesis 21:8 KJV) And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned. (Genesis 21:9 KJV) And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. (Genesis 21:10 KJV) Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. (Genesis 21:11 KJV) And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son. 5 Genesis Ishmael: (Genesis 17:18 KJV) And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! (Genesis 17:19 KJV) And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. (Genesis 17:20 KJV) And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. (Genesis 17:21 KJV) But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. (Genesis 17:22 KJV) And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham. (Genesis 17:23 KJV) And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. (Genesis 17:24 KJV) And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. (Genesis 17:25 KJV) And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. (Genesis 17:26 KJV) In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. (Genesis 17:27 KJV) And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him. (Genesis 21:12 KJV) And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. (Genesis 21:13 KJV) And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed. 6 Genesis (Genesis 21:14 KJV) And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. (Genesis 21:15 KJV) And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. (Genesis 21:16 KJV) And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. (Genesis 21:17 KJV) And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. (Genesis 21:18 KJV) Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. (Genesis 21:19 KJV) And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. (Genesis 21:20 KJV) And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. (Genesis 21:21 KJV) And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt. Ishmael: will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; as he did, many of the Arabian nations: the 1) Hagarenes, 2) Saracens, and 3) Turks, all springing from him: twelve princes shall he beget; So the Saracens were divided into twelve tribes, of which there were so many "phylarchi", or governors; and the Turks also are divided into the same number of tribes (t). And I will make him a great nation; as the nation of the Turks especially is; and the Turkish empire is frequently called in Jewish writings the kingdom of Ishmael, as the Arabic language is called the Ishmaelitish language. Slide 1: A look at Isaac on an individual basis. (A look at Isaac on an individual basis. Later, we will look at him dispensationally.) Isaac: A Type of Regeneration Slide 2: end of. Before Isaac was born, the power and activites of nature were made and Abraham and Sarah had come to the end of themselves. Before Isaac was born, that which was dead had to be quickened by God! 7 Genesis (Rom 4:19 KJV) And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: The sinner is dead and needs life. Natural man is dead to Christ and “life”. Dead: no life (Eph. 2:1 KJV) And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; (Ephesians 4:18 KJV) Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: (John 5:24 KJV) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Just as the deadness of Abraham and Sarah, natural deadness, they freeshadowed spiritual truths: 1. Had to be quickened by God before Isaac could be born 2. Sinner has to be quickened by God into newness of life before he can become a son of God. Slide 3: Before Isaac could be born, God had to perform a miracle!. As with any Christian, before any of us could be born again, God had to work a miracle. Regeneration is the direct result of the supernatural operation of God. It’s not a turn over a new leaf and trying to live better. It’s more than shaking the preacher’s hand and joining the church! It is an act of God’s creative power, the impartation of spiritual life, the communication to us of the Divine nature itself! Abraham & Sarah greatly desired a son, but what could they do?? What could they do to produce life? NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!! The course of nature, them being old, had nothing to do with it. The natural realm could do nothing. Nature had nothing to glory in! Neither do we, when it comes to our salvation. We do not boast about our goodness at all! It took an act of God!! His grace!! His mercy!!! The natural man is a sinner, a lost sinner, a hopeless sinner, a helpless sinner, unable to help himself. Slide 4: The coming of Isaac into Abraham’s household aroused opposition and produced a conflict! Ishmael was mocking Isaac. 8 Genesis (Galatians 4:28 KJV) Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. (Galatians 4:29 KJV) But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. (Galatians 4:30 KJV) Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. (Galatians 4:31 KJV) So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free. Ishmael exemplifies the one born after the flesh; Isaac the one born after the Spirit. When Isaac was born, the true character of Ishmael was manifested; so When we are born again and receive the new nature, the old nature, the flesh, then comes out in it true colors. Just as there were two sons in Abraham’s household, on ethe product of nature the other the gift of God and the outworking of Divine power, eachstanding for a totally different principle, so in the believer there are two natures which are distinct and diverse. There was a conflict between Ishmael and Isaac, so the flesh in us lusteth against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh. (Gal. 5:17) Understand that there are two distinct natures: Old & New (not an improvement of the old); it’s a receiving of a new. Slide 5: The birth of Isaac which revealed the true character of Ishmael. We know little about Ishmael’s life until Isaac came on the scene. When a person becomes a believer, he learns the real character of the old. When we got born again and began to diligently seek God, we see that so many things, ways, philosophies, etc. were so wrong that we could not see before. The fact that there is a conflict in me proves the power of the two natures. Also The Ishmael-nature “persecutes” the Isaac-nature is only to be expected. (No wonder the battle gets tough sometimes.) The Ishmael-nature sometimes seems to be growing worse but then we can see its real character. (Romans 7:15 NIV) I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. (Romans 7:16 NIV) And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. (Romans 7:17 NIV) As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. (Romans 7:18 NIV) I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 9 Genesis (Romans 7:19 NIV) For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. (Romans 7:20 NIV) Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. (Romans 7:21 NIV) So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. (Romans 7:22 NIV) For in my inner being I delight in God's law; (Romans 7:23 NIV) but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. (Romans 7:24 NIV) What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? (Romans 7:25 NIV) Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. Slide 6: Abraham circumcised Isaac, being eight days old as God commanded him. The circumcising of Isaac and later on the Israelites, foreshadowed the spiritual circumcision. (Colossians 2:11 NIV) In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, (Colossians 2:12 NIV) having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. (Colossians 2:13 NIV) When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, (Colossians 2:14 NIV) having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. Judicially we have ben circumcised and God no longer looks at us in the flesh but in Christ, for circumcision – typically and spiritually, is separation from the flesh. Slide 7: Isaac grew, and was weaned. (Gen. 21:8) Isaac grew by feeding on His mother’s milk. The believer grows by feeding on the milk of God’s Word. 10 Genesis (1 Peter 2:2 NIV) Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, Slide 8: Abraham sent Ishmael away. (After Isaac grew – Ish. Put away, put off… The conflict is over!! He who “persecuted” Isaac is now “cast out”!!! Judicially the life of the flesh is already ended for us, but practically it is still here with us and in us. Blessed be God what is now judicially shall soon be true experientially and practical for us. Slide 9: Two thoughts to consider: Slide 1: As we become mature, we exercise authority of that flesh where we are more and more walking in victory. Slide 2: When Christ returns for us, we do not have to deal with this flesh ever again!!! Soon our “Ishmael” will be cast out. (Philippians 3:21 KJV) Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. (1 John 3:2 KJV) Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. Casting out… (Revelation 20:10 KJV) And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (Revelation 20:11 KJV) And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. (Revelation 20:12 KJV) And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. (Revelation 20:13 KJV) And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 11 Genesis (Revelation 20:14 KJV) And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (Revelation 20:15 KJV) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Abimelech pays Abraham a visit: (Genesis 21:22 KJV) And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest: Abimelech was king of Gerar, the same that is spoken of in the preceding chapter, and Phichol was the general of his army; these two great personages came together and paid Abraham a visit, and had some conversation with him, who was still in Gerar, or however in some part of that country not far from it: God is with thee in all that thou doest; greatly prospered him in the things of the world, for of them only could they make a judgment; they saw that he increased in worldly substance, and that his family was increased, and that he succeeded in everything in which he engaged; and, being jealous of his growing greatness and power, were desirous of securing an interest in him and in his favour. (Genesis 21:23 KJV) Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned. (Genesis 21:24 KJV) And Abraham said, I will swear. (Genesis 21:25 KJV) And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away. (Genesis 21:26 KJV) And Abimelech said, I wot not who hath done this thing: neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to day. (Genesis 21:27 KJV) And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech; and both of them made a covenant. (Genesis 21:28 KJV) And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves. 12 Genesis (Genesis 21:29 KJV) And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves? (Genesis 21:30 KJV) And he said, For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have digged this well. (Genesis 21:31 KJV) Wherefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they sware both of them. (Genesis 21:32 KJV) Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba: then Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines. (Genesis 21:33 KJV) And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God. (Genesis 21:34 KJV) And Abraham sojourned in the Philistines' land many days. Slide 10: Looking at Isaac dispensationally: The birth of Isaac awakened the enmity of Ishmael and consequently Sarah said, “Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac”. Slide 11: Previously we looked at Isaac as foreshadowing the birth of Christ, and pointing forward to those who now become the children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. In a word, Isaac stands for Divine sonship. Only the spiritual family of promise answers to “Isaac”. Israel, now does not inherit with the church. (Galatians 4:22 KJV) For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. (Galatians 4:23 KJV) But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. (Galatians 4:24 KJV) Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. (Galatians 4:25 KJV) For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. (Galatians 4:26 KJV) But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. 13 Genesis (Galatians 4:27 KJV) For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. (Galatians 4:28 KJV) Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. In Chapter 21, Slide 12: Isaac foreshadowed those who are members of the Body of Christ. Slide 13: Ishmael stands for those stands for Israel which is now “cast out” during the time that God is dealing with the Gentiles and taking from among them a people for His Name: (Acts 15:14 KJV) Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. Let’s look at the last part of Genesis 21 and see the course of Israel as a nation is pursued in the type. Slide 14: The Course of Israel (Israel’s History) in Genesis Chapter 21 (Genesis 21:14 KJV) And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. Slide 15: 1. Hagar and her son became wanderers in the wilderness. Israel wandered in the wilderness in OT and in NT. (Genesis 21:15 KJV) And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. Slide 16: 2. In type, the Holy Spirit is here taken from Israel – water spent. (Genesis 21:16 KJV) And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. 14 Genesis Slide 17: 3. Type of Jerusalem weeping her desolations.. lamentations of Jeremiah (Genesis 21:17 KJV) And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. (Genesis 21:18 KJV) Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. Slide 18: 4. After Jews repent from rejecting Jesus, they will be restored. (Genesis 21:19 KJV) And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. Slide 19: 5. The Spirit is given once more to Israel. God opened the eyes of Hagar, so in a near-coming day He will open the eyes of the Jews had their garments will be washed in the blood of the Lamb. (Genesis 21:20 KJV) And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. Slide 20: 6. This is a picture of Israel in the Millennium after God has taken them into favor. (Genesis 21:21 KJV) And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt. Slide 21: 7. “Paran” means “Beauty or Glory”, speaking in type of Palestine, the dwelling place of Israel in the Millennium. The wilderness shall be made to blossom as the rose for the curse will be removed; The Shekinah Glory shall once more be in their midst. Slide 22: 8. Israel is allied with Egypt. This will be the case during the Millennium (Isaiah 19:24 KJV) In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land: (Isaiah 19:25 KJV) Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance. (Genesis 21:22 KJV) And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest: 15 Genesis Slide 23: 9. During the Millennium, the Gentiles will seek out the Jew because they will see that God is with them. (Zechariah 8:23 KJV) Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you. (Genesis 21:33 KJV) And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God. Slide 24: 10. Signifies a change from strangership to possession. When viewed typically, it marked the change from strangership to possession. Abraham planted a tree in Beersheba which means “Well of the Oath”. Symbolizing him taking possession of the land. Planting a tree is an emblem of settlement and long continuance (Isaiah 65:22 KJV) They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. Same verse 33: (Genesis 21:33 KJV) And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God. Slide 25: 11. Abraham calls upon the Name of The Everlasting God. Abraham calls not on Jehovah or Almighty. When the Kingdom comes in power and glory, no more emphasis on decay and temporal things but the focus shall be on fixed things, permanence, peace and blessings. Then Israel will say: (Psalms 102:27 KJV) But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. (Psalms 102:28 KJV) The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee. Look at the ending of this picture of Israel: (Genesis 25:16 KJV) These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations. Slide 26: 12. The twelve tribes of Israel will be restored and raised to princely dignity among the nations. 16 Genesis In the Millennium the whole of the twelve tribes of Israel will be restored and raised to princely dignity among the nations. Slide 27: course: Interestingly enough, look at what follows this marvelous sketch of Israel’s Slide 28: Answer: an unparalleled foreshadowing of the Savior’s Death and Resurrection!!! Why link the two together? Slide 29: To show us and later the Jews, that Israel owes her Millennial blessedness, as we do our present and eternal blessings, to the precious Sacrifice of the lamb of God. Now we turn from the Dispensational type to the Individual application: Previously we looked at the seven particulars the birth of Isaac was a type of the birth of the Lord Jesus. Now, we’ll see how the offering up of Isaac upon the altar pointed forward to the cross. Chapter 22 contains information that proves that God requires a human sacrifice. Slide 30: Here God first revealed the necessity for a human victim to expiate (make amends, suffer punishment for wrongdoing) sin, for as it was man that sinned; it must be by man, not beast, that Divine justice would be satisfied. (begin page 222) Chapter 22 (Genesis 22:1 KJV) And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. Not to sin To test or to try (Genesis 22:2 KJV) And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. Jesus taught much about the Father loving the Son Moriah: Worship, vision, high land, land of worship Rebellious, To teach, Fear (to the other nations of the world), easy to be seen This is the place where the city of God was built 17 Genesis (Genesis 22:3 KJV) And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. (Genesis 22:4 KJV) Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. (Genesis 22:5 KJV) And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. (Genesis 22:6 KJV) And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. (John 19:17 KJV) And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: (Genesis 22:7 KJV) And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? (Genesis 22:8 KJV) And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. Isaac could not be the lamb due to sin. (Genesis 22:9 KJV) And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. (Genesis 22:10 KJV) And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. (John 19:31 KJV) The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. (John 19:32 KJV) Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. (John 19:33 KJV) 18 Genesis But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: (Genesis 22:11 KJV) And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. (Genesis 22:12 KJV) And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. Slide 31: Abraham, you have proven to Yahweh that you fear (reverence) Him by giving up your son! Slide 32: What have you given up when God tests your loyalty and reverence to Him? Loyalty demonstrated by action: Seeing thou has not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. Abraham was looking just like God, the Father. Isaac foreshadowed the Son, Jesus. (God giving up His Son.) Isaac was sin stained; therefore, could not complete the sacrifice. Isaac represented man at this point that needed a sacrificial lamb. Ram in the bush was sinless and stood in his stead. (Genesis 22:12 AMP) And He said, Do not lay your hand on the lad or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear and revere God, since you have not held back from Me or begrudged giving Me your son, your only son. God does not make us do things but holds us accountable for what we do! (Genesis 22:13 KJV) And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. People refer to “God always has a lamb in the bush”! Look at the circumstances here: Abraham had given up the most precious thing that he and his wife had always wanted, a son! This was years after Ishmael had left and before the other children were born. (Genesis 22:14 KJV) And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. Name that place where God did things for you or your loved ones… Healing Miracles Broke certain bondages 19 Genesis Material blessings Etc. (Genesis 22:15 KJV) And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, (Genesis 22:16 KJV) And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: God really loved what He did! He swore by Himself!!! An oath with God is a solemn pledging of himself in all the unchangeableness of his faithfulness and truth, to the fulfillment of his promise. Oath, i.e.: “As sure as I am alive!!”… (Genesis 22:17 KJV) That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; Slide 33: Blessings resulting from God’s obedience: 1. I will bless you (Gen. 22:17). 2. I will multiply you as the stars. 3. I will multiply you as the sand. 4. Your seed shall be victorious. 5. All nations will be blessed through your seed (Gen. 22:18). —Dake's Study Notes (Genesis 22:18 KJV) And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. Slide 34: Threefold cause of God's blessing: 1. Because you have done this thing. 2. You have not withheld your only son. 3. You have obeyed My voice (Gen. 22:18). —Dake's Study Notes Application: 4. What he gave up resembled Jesus!! Jesus was foreshadowed here. 5. We can give up things that bring glory to Jesus. 6. We have to give up things that are valuable in exchange for He wants for us. 7. We need not give it up begrudgingly. 20 Genesis (Genesis 22:19 KJV) So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba. (Genesis 22:20 KJV) And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor; (Genesis 22:21 KJV) Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, (Genesis 22:22 KJV) And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel. (Genesis 22:23 KJV) And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother. (Genesis 22:24 KJV) And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.
