Proposal to limit the number of students entering elementary education – Each semester, the Curriculum and Instruction Department will limit the number of students entering Teacher Education to sixty (60) elementary education or early childhood development and education students. These sixty elementary or early childhood development and education students will distribute themselves between two cohorts of thirty (30) preservice teachers; one cohort of thirty (30) in Moscow, and the other cohort of thirty (30) in Coeur d’Alene. A third cohort of thirty (30), having just completed the Math/Science & Social Studies block in Moscow will complete their English/LA Block that same Fall semester. The total number of preservice teachers enrolled in elementary methods blocks during any semester would be ninety (90). Currently, there are eighty-two (82) preservice teachers enrolled in the elementary methods blocks in Moscow and Coeur d’Alene. Twenty-five (25) preservice teachers will be admitted to Teacher Education, and thus, divided into one of two cohorts of thirty (30), based on a “cursory interview” consisting of the following: Minimum Criteria: Communications 101 (2 cr) English 102 (3 cr) Math 143 (3 cr) for El. Ed. Math 143 (3 cr) or Stat 150 (3 cr) for ECDE EDCI 201 (2 cr) for El. Ed. FCS 210 (2 cr) for ECDE + 20 Hours of Service-Learning EDSP 300 EDCI 301 for El. Ed. FCS 234 for ECDE Cumulative GPA of 2.75+ Background Check Further Evidence: Letter of Application Two Form Letters of Reference from Faculty Writing Sample Two Tier Interview Grade of “C” or higher Grade of “C” or higher Grade of “C” or higher Grade of “C” or higher Grade of “C” or higher Grade of “C” or higher Clear Also, indicating Moscow or Coeur d’Alene cohort Likert Scale – Poor to Excellent Ratings Reflective – What is good teaching and learning Initial – What draws you to teacher education? The last five (5) preservice teachers admitted to Teacher Education will be chosen for each cohort, based on the minimum criteria and further evidence, cited above, and also based on a second tier personal interview with elementary methods faculty. No more than thirty (30) preservice teachers will be allowed into elementary methods block courses, unless that arrangement is agreed to by all elementary methods faculty, in both blocks. If there are fewer than thirty-one (31) students applying for either elementary methods cohort, interviews will not be necessary.
