The 3 Branches of the U.S. Government Branches of Our Government Legislative Branch • They work in the Capital Building. • It is located in Washington, DC. • The legislative Branch is responsible for making new laws. • The people who work for the legislative branch are called Congress. • Congress is made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. CONGRESS SENATE • The Senate has 100 Members • Two senators from each state. • Senators are elected for 6-year terms. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE • The House of Representatives is made up of 435 members. • The number of Representatives is decided by population. • Every state must have at least one representative. • Members are elected by the people for 2-year terms. Executive Branch • The executive branch makes sure people follow the laws of the United States. • The leaders of this branch are the President and Vice-President. • The President has helpers. – They are called the President’s Cabinet. Judicial Branch • When people are not sure about the meaning of a law, the judicial branch listens to many opinions and makes a decision. • The judicial branch is made up of courts. • The highest of these courts is the U.S. Supreme Court. – The Supreme Court is made up of 9 judges. – They meet at the Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C.
