ACADEMIC DEAN’S OFFICE – OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES PROCEDURE FOR INTERPRETING DATA CONTAINED IN THE COURSE SUCCESS RATE REPORT (RURENSCOV3 OUT) PURPOSE: 1. To ensure that all academic disciplines have access to course pass rates and class averages by semester, discipline, teacher and section. 2. To ensure that all academic disciplines have the tools to examine the level of assessment equity between different sections of the same course taught by different teachers. VANIER COLLEGE STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS SUPPORTED: “Vanier will provide high quality education that meets the ever-changing needs of our students and society” (goal 3 of the Vanier College Strategic Plan, 2008-2013). PROCEDURE: 1. The Institutional Development & Research (IDR) Office generates the Course Success Rate reports for the Fall and Winter semesters from data extracted by the Information Technology Department from Clara, the college’s internal data base. 2. IDR distributes each discipline-specific report to its respective discipline contact person (as specified by the appropriate Faculty Dean) and the entire report to the Academic and Faculty Deans. 3. Initially, because this is a new process, during the Fall 2013 semester, IDR will gradually distribute reports for the Fall 2011 to Winter 2013 semesters. Subsequently, data for each Fall and Winter semester will be added to the bank as the data becomes available, so that data for the most recent three years is available. Please note: The report is provided in Excel format and includes the MGS for each section to give some indication of the relative strength of the group. When interpreting these data it is important NOT to focus on any one particular semester but rather to examine TRENDS over time. IDR staff will be available to provide support to all disciplines, as required. If you have any questions about this report, please contact one of the Institutional Development and Research (IDR) staff. AnSession - The year and semester for which the data is presented. The first 4 digits represent the year; the last digit represents, the semester as follows: 1 = winter 2 = summer 3 = fall 2. DiscNo - Discipline number. 3. DiscTitle - Discipline title. 4. CourseNo - Course number. 5. CourseTitle - Course title. 6. NomPrenom -Last and first name of the teacher. 7. GroNoGro -Section number. 8. NoRegInCrs -Number of students registered in each section post-validation. 9. Passed -Number of students registered in each section (post-validation) that passed the course. 10. PPassed - Percent of students registered in each section (post-validation) that passed the course. 11. ClassAverage - Average grade achieved in the course for all of the students registered in each section (post-validation). 12. NoMGS -This indicates the number of students in each section for whom an MGS was available. An MGS cannot be calculated if all high school marks are not available. For example, if there were 20 students in a section and the MGS was calculated for only 5 students, you would not consider the MGS in this case to be a valid indictor of the strength of the group. 13. MGS - As used in this report, MGS = the average MGS for all of the students in each section who have an MGS. This can be used as a rough indicator of the strength of the group. As a general definition, MGS is a French acronym for = moyenne générale au secondaire1. It is one of the more commonly used formulas throughout the Réseau to represent high school average. 14. UnitNo - The code for Vanier College, and the area of studies. 1 = Day studies. 15. College - The college and area of studies. 1 The method for calculating the MGS and the courses included in the calculation, the reader is referred to page 4 of the following SRAM link http://www2.csmb.qc.ca/dalbeviau/services/orientation/cegep/doc-cote-SRAM.pdf
