Course Description:
This course deals primarily with integral calculus and its applications. Other topics
include sequences and series, the solution of simple differential equations, and numerical
integration.
Ponderation:
3-2-3
Teaching Methods:
Teaching methods will include lecturing, in class problem solving and discussions,
software maple application, homework, quizzes, and tests to reach our objectives.
Textbook:
Single Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 6th Edition by James Stewart, 2008.
Or Single Variable Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals, by James Stewart, 2007
Competencies to be achieved:
 To determine the indefinite integral of a function.
 To calculate the definite integral and the improper integral of a function in an
interval.
 To calculate volumes, areas and lengths and draw two- and three-dimensional
representations.
 To express concrete problems as differential equations and solve simple differential
equations.
Important Dates:
Test 1: Feb. 17
Test 2: Mar. 31
Evaluation Procedures and Breakdown of Marks:
The term mark will be based on three tests, quizzes, and assignments.
Plan 1: assignment 15% + two tests (20%, 25%) + final exam (40%)
Plan 2: assignment 15% + two tests (10%, 15%) + final exam (60%)
The final grade will be the higher of the two results.
Each test will cover all materials you studied, emphasizing the part not yet tested.
All tests must be written as scheduled. Medical proof is required to make up a missing
test. There are no make-up assignments.
Attendance:
It is highly recommended that you attend every class since the majority of the content of
each test will include material that is covered in class lectures and not necessarily found
in your textbook. Arriving on time and staying until class is dismissed is also required.
1
Arriving to class late or leaving early is disruptive to both instructor and other students.
If you entirely partially miss a class, it is your responsibility to copy the notes from a
classmate, learn the material covered, and get informed about the announcements made
during your absence.
Academic Resources:
The Mathematics and Science Centre provides free peer tutoring every workday during
regular office hours in F540. You could request extra WeBWorK by contacting the teacher.
Extended and emergency office hours are available upon request.
Please Note:
 Please deactivate your cellular phone during class.
 Graphic calculator is not permitted.
Course Policies:
General Academic Policies:
It is the student's responsibility to be familiar with and adhere to the Vanier College
Academic Policies. These policies can be found online under “Academic Policies” at
http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/acadean/P_index.html ).Your attention is drawn in
particular to the following policies. A brief summary of each is included.
Student Academic Complaints (Policy number 7210-8):
The Vanier College Student Academic Complaints Policy and procedures puts an
emphasis on mediation as the primary means to resolve complaints in the academic area.
If you have a problem with a teacher and have been unable to resolve it by talking with
him or her, you may wish to enlist the help of the Faculty Mediation Committee. The
committee member names and contact information are available in Student Services or
through the office of the Faculty Dean.
Cheating and Plagiarism (Policy number 7220-12):
Any form of cheating or plagiarism will result in a grade of zero on the test or assignment
and a letter from the teacher will be placed in your file. A repeated offence may lead to
even more serious consequences. Please consult the Vanier Student Writing Guide, the
Vanier College Catalogue, the Student Handbook, the policy online and your teacher for
more information.
Student Misconduct in the Classroom (Policy number 7210-19):
This policy provides guidelines for handling cases of student misbehaviour in the
classroom and other instructional settings. Such cases may include conduct that is
abusive to the teacher and/or other students, or disruptive to the teaching/learning
process. This policy does not limit the teacher’s or the College’s right to take immediate
action in cases of imminent danger to persons or property.
Zero Tolerance (Policy number 7110-2):
The following disruptive behaviours will not be tolerated in any degree on campus:
Unauthorized Use of Alcohol/Illegal Drugs; Violence against Persons or Property;

holy day not formally recognized in the College calendar must inform their teachers, in
writing, during the first week of classes, of the particular date(s) and times of the
religious holy days on which they must be absent. Absences approved in this manner are
considered to be excused absences. Students are responsible for material covered in the
classes and labs them miss.
