Parts of Speech Review You will be asked to complete a project with this information after the presentation! CA ELA Standards WOC 1.3Demonstrate knowledge and application of the eight parts of speech *Nouns • A noun names a person, place, thing or idea. Nouns Examples: Persons veterinarian, Dr. Lee, friend Places school, Hilton Head Island, Grand Canyon Things pencil, paper, notebook, desk Ideas excitement, anger, joy *Pronouns A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun or another pronoun. Examples: I, we, he, them, and it. Instead of: Susie has a dog. With Pronoun: She has a dog. *Verbs A verb is a word used to express an action or a state of being. The two main types of verbs are action (tells what a subject does) and linking (links subject to another word) Verbs Examples: An action verb tells what its subject does. The action it expresses can be either physical or mental. The students opened their lockers! Verbs A linking verb links its subject to a word in the predicate. The most common linking verbs are forms of the verb be. Forms of be: be, am is, are, was, were, been, being The students were excited about starting school! *Adjectives An adjective is a word that modifies, or describes, a noun or a pronoun. Example: The apple is big, green, and juicy. *Adverbs An adverb is a word that modifies a verb (1), an adjective (2), or another adverb (3). Examples: 1) Explorers eagerly chase adventure. 2) Some explores visit amazingly beautiful places. 3) Others quite bravely explore the unknown-space. *Prepositions A preposition is a word that shows a relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence. Prepositions…..Think Table!!!! The cat sleeps on the bed. *Conjunctions A conjunction is a word used to join words or groups of words. FANBOYS Cats are intelligent and playful. *Interjections Interjections are words or phrases used to express emotion. Wow, there’s a monster lizard. Gee Whiz! That was a cool movie! Review Can you name the 8 parts of speech? Assignment • Create a foldable chart, which reviews each of the 8 parts of speech. For each part of speech include the definition, and an example sentence. • Underline the corresponding part of speech in your sentence. • Foldable charts will be attached to notebooks.
