Chemistry 1 FLASH CARD ASSIGNMENT ELEMENTS & POLYATOMIC IONS Instructions and Grade Criteria: 1. Make a set of flash cards of the first 38 elements listed on the periodic table and these 16 select elements (Palladium, Silver, Cadmium, Tin, Iodine, Xenon, Cesium, Barium, Platinum, Gold, Mercury, Lead, Bismuth, Radon, Francium, and Radium) using the instructions below. This makes a total of 54 element cards. 2. Also, make a separate set of cards for the 34 ion cards (22 polyatomic and 12 monoatomic ions) as shown on the back page. 3. Use 3x5 or 4x6 cards (any color, lined or un-lined). All index cards must be the same size and of the same type (all lined or all un-lined). 4. All the information should be neatly printed with the correct spelling and proper format as shown on the periodic table or on the back of this handout. This is important because if you write them incorrectly, you will study them incorrectly. For example: N for nitrogen (not n) or He for helium (not HE or he) 5. For all the elements: List the atomic number in the upper right hand corner of the index card on BOTH SIDES. Print the atomic symbol of the element on the one side of the card and the name of the element on the other side. See example below. 10 Ne 10 Neon One side Other side For the ions: Print the symbol of the ion with its charge on one side of the card and the name of the ion on the other side. See example below. SO4 2One side Sulfate Other side 6. All flash cards will be collected on Friday, March 27 (the day of the cumulative test). Element cards are worth 100-point quiz grade and ion cards are worth a separate 100-point quiz grade. 7. All cards must be secured with a metal ring or rubber band, etc. 8. All element cards must be in order (according to their atomic numbers) and ion cards in order according to how they are listed from top to bottom (left to right). 9. Weekly quizzes will be given according to the schedule listed on the backside of the page. Spelling errors (if they are only 1 letter off) or symbols written improperly will result in 2-point deduction per item. 10. Flash cards should be brought to class daily and studied when extra time permits. 11. A cumulative test will be given on both select elements and select ions. This will be one test (without practice test or review). These elements and ions will also be apart of the quarter 2 MidQuarter Exam on Friday, April 2. Please seriously prepare yourself.
