Allocating, Monitoring and Supporting Work
Constant change and demanding operational environments mean that there will be
times when you and your team need to find the capacity to do more. This workshop
will give you the opportunity to review your current working practices in relation to
managing high workload situations and help you to identify strategies for when you
need to adapt your approach for supporting individuals in the team.
OBJECTIVES – As a result of the workshop you will have:

Explored different approaches for planning how a team will meet agreed
objectives, taking into account the capacity and the abilities of the team.

Understanding Annual Review (e-learning)
Annual Review aims to equip employees to realise their full potential; to focus their
efforts as direct contributors to the success of the university; and to support
individual professional and personal development. Whether you are conducting
reviews for staff or being reviewed, all staff should complete this e-learning module
to ensure they understand the process at the University and get the most out of
Annual Reviews.

Annual Review Skills
Do you have to conduct reviews for your team and want to ensure these are as
effective as possible? Whether you have never done this before or are looking to
refresh your skills, this workshop can help. With a focus on skills, this workshop
clarifies the process and expectation and offers strategies for dealing with different
situations that may arise in an annual review.

Anti-Bribery Training
An online training module to raise awareness of background of the Bribery Act 2010 to
understand how it affects the way you need to work.
OBJECTIVES – By the end of this course you will:



Have an awareness of background of the Bribery Act 2010, and the broad
implications of the Act and understand how it affects the way you need to
work.
This module will help you to understand the offences set out in the Act, as
well as possible defences.

Assertiveness
These modules are currently under development and will be launched soon.

Do you sometimes come away from interactions thinking that if only you had been
more assertive you would have got a very different outcome? Or maybe you find it
difficult to know whether you are being too assertive or not assertive enough. These
online modules will explore the benefits of assertiveness, and provide a tool for you
to work through to consider your own approach and how this might be improved.

The collegiate decision-making of the University relies heavily on the work of those
who service committees in all their forms. Do you want to improve your confidence
for this important role? This workshop covers the whys, whats, hows and whos of
Committee Servicing.

Creating Personal Presence and Building Business Relationships
Do you really know how you are perceived by others? Being able to make contacts,
open communication channels and develop professional and personal relationships

skills, particularly for senior people seeking to achieve co-operation and collaboration
across different specialist areas, departments or organisations. This workshop
focuses on the key skills and behaviours that will enhance your relationship building

Developing an Understanding of Equality, Diversity and
Internationalisation
The University is committed to embedding equality, inclusion and diversity as
fundamental principles throughout our community. Some of the ways in which we will
do this includes:
 protecting and celebrating diversity as a defining element of the University of
Edinburgh experience
 ensuring staff have appropriate training and information in equality areas to
prevent discrimination, make reasonable adjustments, and promote equality of
opportunity.

staff to meet the strategic plan vision and aims to ensure that you:

Developing your People
When you manage a team, how well it performs often depends on how well you've
developed your staff. Individuals need on-going development to help them become
more effective, and to help them work within the changing workplace. This workshop
will introduce the learning cycle to managers/reviewers. It will include an overview of
possible workplace learning approaches; in order to help managers apply this
thinking to their team’s development plan(s).

Effective Chairing

Engaging Others
Do you feel you have the confidence to engage others and present yourself
effectively in your work? This workshop introduces you to the essentials of oral
communication and personal presentation. It covers the skills and behaviours
required to engage others; develop your personal brand, and present yourself and
your message successfully with energy, spontaneity and creativity. The workshop
covers engaging others in a variety of situations from small informal meetings to
external business meetings/events.

Equality Impact Assessment (EIA)
One key responsibility for all public sector bodies is to assess the impact of its
policies and practices on minority groups and communities.
To fulfil our key general equality duty the University needs to assess the impact of
applying a proposed new or revised policy or practice against the needs of the
general equality duty.
Work is under way to develop an Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) Framework,
including training and awareness raising, forms, and how to comply with the general
equality duty.

 What the law says about equality impact assessment

Do you want to enhance your skills and knowledge to lead, manage and motivate
your team? This programme will help you develop your skills, knowledge and
personal abilities you need to succeed as a manager. It will help improve your
communication skills and ability to motivate and inspire your team.

OBJECTIVES – As a result of completing the workshops and project work, you

 Learn more about yourself and your approach to management
 Gain a range of key management skills which you will have the opportunity to
put into practice in your own role

Giving Effective Feedback
Effective feedback enables people to develop faster as they learning more about
themselves, their performance and increase their awareness of others. If you have
feedback to give but are not sure how best to do this, or perhaps you have had a bad
experience when giving or receiving feedback in the workplace. This workshop
promote the benefit of effective feedback in the workplace.

Explored strategies to ensure feedback you give and receive is effective.

Managing Difficult Conversations
The need for difficult conversations can arise for a number of reasons. There may be
an emerging performance or behavioural problem that you want to ‘nip in the bud’, or
perhaps you want to deal with an ongoing issue that has been ignored for some
time. Whatever the reason, if you are facing the prospect of a ‘difficult conversation’
and are concerned that you could cause offence, make matters worse or make no

The University’s Disciplinary Procedure indicates that, in most cases, it will be the
line manager who will carry out the investigation into potential disciplinary matters. It
is, therefore, in the University’s interest that all line managers are trained in how to

Protected Acts/Whistleblowing
"Whistleblowing" is the term used to describe a disclosure made to someone in
authority alleging corruption, malpractice or wrongdoing on the part of another
person. In the University this will normally be about a colleague's conduct in the
course of their employment or about the University’s practices.

Managing employees who are protected

Recruiting for Excellence
Are you concerned about the legal requirements in your role as line manager? Do
you want to develop a knowledge and understanding of employment legislation and
to keep abreast of recent changes? Facilitated by the University lawyers this
workshop focusses on recent changes in legislation relevant to the role of the line
manager in Higher Education.
OBJECTIVES – As a result of this workshop, you will have:
 Considered the legislation that impacts on recruitment and how this is
adhered to by the University
 Explored in depth the full recruitment and selection process including the best
practice activities at each stage
 Considered different approaches to interviewing in line with the best practice
approach at the University
 Reviewed different methods to compare and evaluate candidates effectively
 Explored how to convert a successful interview into a successful appointment
 Gained practice in the full recruitment and selection process including
providing effective feedback to candidates

Recruitment, Selection and the Law (e-learning)
A robust approach to recruitment ensures that the University of Edinburgh operates
good practice in the recruitment and selection of its staff that is directly in line with its
dual aims of equality of opportunity for all and recruiting excellent staff in support of
the University’s strategic objectives. Whether you are involved in shortlisting for a
post or chairing a panel, all staff involved in the recruitment process should complete
this e-learning module.
OBJECTIVES - After completing these modules, you will have:
 developed an awareness of relevant legislation, the latest legal position and
University policy and practice in relation to recruitment and selection
 increased awareness of objective selection criteria , redeployment and

Setting Effective Objectives
Objectives describe what a task will accomplish, or what a task will contribute to.
Setting objectives is more of an art than a science, and it can be difficult to define
them correctly. This workshop will provide you with guidance on how to write
effective objectives, including the opportunity for you to review the objectives you
currently set for your team.

Unconscious Bias
Bias can creep into any situation where individuals have the power to influence the
outcome through their decisions and actions. Bias can be costly. It can cause us to
make decisions that are not objective, miss opportunities and limit potential. Whether
you are involved in recruitment, people development, performance management,
leadership, or teaching and supervision of students, all staff should complete this elearning module to reduce the effect of bias on their decision-making and their work
culture.
AIMED AT:
This course is compulsory for all staff involved in recruitment and promotion panels.

Wellbeing in the work place
Right now, 1 in 6 workers is experiencing depression, anxiety or stress.
Mental health in the workplace is the elephant in the room. It exists but too often it is
ignored. But some problems are too big to ignore.
OBJECTIVES – As a result of the workshop you will:



Have an awareness of mental wellbeing in the workplace, including the
spectrum of mental health, focusing on stress, anxiety and depression
Understand your role in supporting and managing staff with mental health
problems
Have the skills and confidence to proactively manage absence due to mental
ill-health and enable a successful return to the workplace.
AIMED AT:
It is highly recommended that ALL Support Groups managers attend this workshop.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: You should have attended the Managing Absence
Workshop before enrolling on this workshop or have significant experience
managing staff absence.
