Welcoming Remarks We would like to express our whole-hearted gratitude to international students who will apply to Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS). Our university has strived since its inception way back in 1954 to offer top-notch, sophisticated education in an increasing variety of foreign languages. Along with its teaching of numerous foreign studies in the humanities, social sciences, business, and law, HUFS is progressing with leaps and bounds to win acclaim as a university with prestige on the global stage. Currently HUFS has 8 graduate schools, 17 colleges, and 77 departments. Home to international and area studies and foreign languages, the university is making strenuous efforts to provide more opportunities to international students of diverse nationalities. HUFS offers admission to outstanding international students from all around the world. As the university is home to foreign studies, in the age of globalization students from overseas are increasingly welcome to join the HUFS academic community. The university employs the early application options to select talented students from all around the world and to Koreans who were educated abroad. However, international students are admitted as part of an extra quota irrespective of the total quota of freshmen designated for HUFS. Overseas Koreans whose parents are business expatriates or public officers posted abroad for more than two years are admitted to the proportion of two percent of the total intake quota. After thorough assessment of the required documents, applicants should take written tests in Korean and English. In addition, international students should pass an oral Korean proficiency test after the successful processing of the required application documents. As of the academic year 2011, 233 students from countries as far afield as Britain, Brazil, Canada, China, Russia, Turkey and the United States were selected through this special admission process. To facilitate the school life of international students, our Student Counseling Center (SCC) offers "Joyful HUFS Life" programs to overseas freshmen. The SCC also promotes community activities for new students from abroad giving advice on study methods and school life at HUFS. Adding to these efforts is the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) that has a special "Korean Language Tutoring Program" for international freshmen. Under this program, the CTL appoints Korean students from the Department of Korean Education to tutor new foreign students in the basics of the Korean language. The International Student Office (ISO) runs a help desk on the ground floor of the student residence hall (GlobeeDorm) all year round in order to help international students adapt to the challenges of college life in Korea. The ISO Help Desk connects overseas freshmen with senior Korean students who help them accommodate to adapting to living in Korea and studying at the university. On behalf of our university we wholeheartedly welcome your interest in HUFS and we hope you will take the next step of applying to join our lively scholarly community that is already unique in Korea and increasingly so in the global academic world.
