Good Morning Dr. Lowery.
I hope that you're having a wonderful summer. I recently got into contact with a PE at a search
and placement firm looking to fill a position that requires the background of a recent graduate
with MS/ME in Structural Engineering. If you know of any students that would be interested in
pursuing this opportunity, they can contact the person at the information below:

Professor Lowery,
Howdy! My father forwarded an email to me, from you, requesting information from Former
Students about opportunities for engineering grads from A&M.
I would like to share some information with you regarding this matter. I am an Account
Manager for Talascend Engineering Resources in Houston. We specialize in placing engineers
of all disciplines with some of the most well known companies in the world. Here in Houston,
we focus mainly on oil & gas professionals while in our Detroit location, we focus on the
automotive disciplines. Please feel free to share our website, www.Talascend.com, with new
graduates and Former Students. We post all of our jobs, all across the world, on our website and
it is updated daily. I also post our more entry-level positions on the A&M Career Center portal,
HireAggies. I also make sure to post all jobs, that are requested through my clients, on the
TexAgs.com Job Network Forum. Any steps I can take to help out fellow Ags is taken!
Thanks and Gig 'Em!

Dr. Lowery,
Our company, Geoscience Earth & Marine Services, Inc., is very much interested in hiring some civil engineers
that are interested in working on oil and gas projects worldwide. Information on our company is available on
our web site – www.gemsinc.com.
If you have students that would like to interview with us about prospective employment, please have them
call Mr. Alan Young at 281-799-7190 or send me an email at Alan.Young@F-E-T.com. Our company currently
has a number of employees that are Aggies, and we would like to hire more.
Thanks for your advising us of the opportunity.
Alan
Dear Dr. Lowery,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding opportunities for your civil engineering students! We are
interested in providing internships and in interviewing recent graduates for potential
employment.
I assist with recruiting for the firm and can help distribute any resumes you might have…even
for past (newly unemployed) students looking for help from you for placement. Also, if you
have recruiting events, we would like to consider attending them.
I am attaching a brochure that might be of interest to your students. Not only does it feature
several young engineers in meaningful positions to which your students could relate, it discusses
how the much-over-used-term “sustainability” is really mostly the exercise of good practices by
the professional disciplines, and not so much about LEED points. (Though the USGBC
movement has certainly raised awareness!)
(See https://ceprofs.civil.tamu.edu/llowery/announcements/dunaway.pdf)
Please keep me in the loop of your recruiting needs. And if you like, from time to time I can
send you information that might help your students get an inside peek at what it is like to work at
firms like Dunaway.
Thank you!
Susie Peden
Chief Marketing Officer

I just got a call from Clark Construction, one of the largest in the country, saying that
while they were not actually beating the bushes for new engineers, they would seriously
consider your resume through their website at http://clarkconstruction.com.

daily. Candidates can review postings, job descriptions and post for the position on the

Hello,
I received your email as a forward from one of my managers and wanted to inform you that
Bechtel will attend the career fair in September so we hope you are able to direct interested
students our direction! Bechtel will select students that apply to positions we will open the week
of the career fair to an invitation only College Day at our office. There are only 50 spaces so if
you would like to instruct students to update their resumes with their graduation dates, classes,
projects and experience that would definitely give them a good starting point!

I just got a call from one of our former students who graduated 3 years ago and is now
working with Trican Well Service. They are a Canadian firm opening up in a major way
in the U.S. and intend to hire both experienced engineers and new college graduates.
You can see what they do at http://www.trican.us and apply at
http://www.trican.us/Careers/JobPostings.aspx Go to the bottom of the page where it
shows
Apply Now: Print Application (include your resume) <- (This is where you would apply for one of the jobs listed)
If you do not see a position that interests you but would like to be considered for future positions, please complete our general application.
You may do so by applying online or by printing the general application and mailing/faxing it with your resume to:
Trican Well Service, L. P.
Attention: Human Resources
5825 N. Sam Houston Parkway West, Suite 600
Houston, TX 77086
Fax: (281) 716-9211
Thank you for your interest in Trican. Only those applicants chosen for an interview will be contacted.
He says there are many more openings than currently listed, and speaks very highly of the firm.
You may not be sure how to fill out their application, since it is really slanted towards drilling.
For what I would do, see https://ceprofs.civil.tamu.edu/llowery/announcements/Trican.pdf You
cannot, of course, use those exact words, or all 50 of your applications will say the same thing
and they will throw them all out. Make up something that is appropriate to you.

The following firm is not now accepting applications for this position. Plan on attending
the SEC Career Fair at A&M this fall. If you are seriously interested, and think they
would be crazy to pass you up, you can email me your resume and I may know someone
at the firm who might take a look at it. Use Jaster Quintanilla and your last name in the
Subject line.

Master’s degree/candidates, Structures Option only:
Dr. Lowery,
Thank you for the email. We have hired a couple of civil engineers this year in our land development
group here in Dallas. We have looked at a few structural candidates, but have not yet made a
hire. Projects have been slow to develop this year and those on the books have slowed down or been
phased out. There appears to be good project potential, but it is slow to come.
I will forward your email to our Dallas office who may need additional civil engineers in the future. I will
also forward this information to our Fort Worth office who may need a structural engineer in the future.
If you have any master’s candidates with a structural emphasis, I would like to evaluate and possibly
interview. I feel we will make an additional hire this year in our transportation group, but I’m not sure with
the exact timing at this point.

Hi Dr. Lowery,
Gig'em. Thanks for your email. We are, in fact, hiring in this office here in San Antonio. We are an
affiliate of the largest recruiting organization in the world, MRINetwork (www.mrinetwork.com/careers), so
we have our finger on the pulse of hiring across the USA.
I'd love to hire a few Aggies to work here in our recruiting office in San Antonio. Now you might ask,
"David, what on God's earth does a BSCE have to do with becoming a recruiter? They got their CE
degree to be a headhunter?"
Well, if I told you that a new college BSCE from TAMU could make $50,000 first year, $80,000 2nd year,
and $100,000+ year three out of college, that would be the hard facts that may make a CE take a second
look.
In addition, we focus on placing engineers in companies, and it takes one to know one. We like to hire
engineers who know how to recruit and communicate with other engineers.
Please have any enthusiastic and outgoing (extrovert) CE's in your college give us a call. We'd love to
talk with them.
Thanks!
Lee: Please also direct them to the Account Executive job description on our company career
website: www.mrinetwork.com/careers or have them go directly to our San Antonio office

department in 1986, I am can relate to trying to find a job in a down market. Unfortunately, my employer

without having to make any significant staffing reductions but do not anticipate any significant hiring in the

Currently we are not hiring as the economy is poor at best. Hope America gets it right in November 2012
and elects a great leader to straighten out the mess this country is in and we can get people back to work

I received your email and thought I might respond with a few tips and such. I just graduated in
May, and I moved to Midland, Texas with two solid job offers and more on the table. I took a job
… only to find out it was not the right fit for my life at this period of time, and I was quickly able
to transition to a job with Parkhill Smith and Cooper as a civil engineer. Thus far I have loved it.
I know students may not want to hear this, but they need to look beyond Houston, Austin, and
Dallas. There are lots of job opportunities in West Texas right now with the oil boom, both in
civil engineering and oil and gas, and they should not limit themselves to the big cities because
[they think] Midland and Odessa are less than ideal. Trust me, this move has been one of the best
parts of my life so far.
Please tell your current students to look into all the civil engineering firms in Midland and to
make the calls! Midlanders are very friendly and willing to help, especially if you're lucky
enough to find an Aggie! My best of luck to them all. Please let me know if you would like any
other information or specifics on the area.

Lee,
The NOAA National Weather Service typically has several entry level hydrologist
(begin at GS 7 track to GS 12) openings each year at its 13 River Forecast
Centers. This year the Hydrologists in Charge in Tulsa, OK and Slidell, LA
retired which after the domino effect will eventually create a couple of
opportunities but not necessarily at those locations.
I would advise any
students interested in working for the federal government to create a profile and
set up search engines at www.usajobs.gov.
I'll keep a watch out for entry level
positions and will forward them to you.
Good luck,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sept. 22, 2011
NOAA announces contract to construct National Water Center
Alabama facility will improve river and flood forecasting
NOAA today announced the award of a contract to Triune-Beck, Joint Venture V
of Dallas to build the new NOAA National Water Center on the campus of the University
of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.
Amid growing economic and societal demands for more integrated and
expansive water resources information, the center will integrate and combine the
capabilities of multiple federal water partners to expand and improve river and flood
forecasting, enhance water resource management, accelerate the application of
research to real world uses and provide a single portal for water resources information.
The $18,881,500 award to construct the center will create a first-of-its-kind facility
that will combine hydrological forecasting operations and research under one roof to
support field operations, improve joint agency coordination and address emerging
stakeholder needs.
“Water resource issues are complex, multi-disciplinary and growing, as we’ve
seen with this year’s floods in the northeast and the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio
rivers and the prolonged drought across much of the South,” said NOAA Administrator
Dr. Jane Lubchenco. “The necessary expertise and capabilities to address these crossboundary issues rarely reside within one agency or organization. There is an increasing
need for close partnerships among federal agencies and local, state and regional
entities; the National Water Center provides a focal point to address this national need.”
The center will help achieve the strategy of the Integrated Water Resources
Science and Services (IWRSS)—a federal partnership of agencies, including NOAA,
with complementary missions in water science, observation, prediction and
management who are committed to addressing the nation’s water resources information
and management needs. NOAA anticipates the center will facilitate a strong
collaborative relationship with the University of Alabama and other universities.
Among other functions, the center will include a water resources forecasting
operations center, an applied water resources research and development laboratory, a
geo-intelligence laboratory, and a distance learning center. The facility will reflect
sustainable design principles and meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in

Lee,
I am not sure ExxonMobil is hiring Civil Engineers specifically, but they are always hiring
employees for all our worldwide operations. Our Production Department has hired Civil Engineers in the
past to perform Petroleum Engineering duties, because the knowledge necessary is similar to the
background Civil Engineers have. I suggest that you have interested graduates complete the online form
for Employment at our ExxonMobil website,
(http://www.exxonmobil.com/Corporate/imports/careers/careers.aspxand), and they will be instructed
as to how to apply for employment. Hope this helps, and I do hope all our graduating Aggies can find
jobs. Maybe they should consider running for office so we can get some honest politicians in
Washington to save our country and our economy from inevitable doom if we continue the path we are

Howdy Lee,
I retired from Hercules Offshore a little over a year ago and have been consumed by retirement
activities and out of touch with the industry. I was running construction projects and doing some
structural design for modification projects. Hercules operates a fleet of shallow water offshore
drilling rigs, mostly jackups. Generally the industry hires engineers with a few years structural,
construction (steel fabrication) or mechanical work experience, but they are a small company
compared to the deepwater drillers such as behemoths Transocean and Noble Drilling and may
be willing to take on an engineer without industry experience. Their website is
www.herculesoffshore.com. They are presently looking for engineers in projects. These guys
generally work under the guidance of a senior person. [Redacted – L^3]. He may be able to help,
or put the candidate in touch with personnel. Hercules was also hiring summer interns while I
was there. They could be a source of employment for the CE undergraduates.

Hi Dr. Lowery,
I work at BakerRisk in San Antonio, and we are almost always looking for qualified entry level
engineers. Typically, we require a Ph.D., M.S., or M.E. in structures for our full-time engineers. We also
have an active intern/co-op program, and these candidates have typically at least completed their junior
year and must be interested in structures. Our intern/co-op program has also been successful for people
who have completed their B.S. and are about to start working toward their Master's degree but want to
get some work experience for a semester or two.
Feel free to pass this information along to your students. Interested candidates can find more
information about BakerRisk at www.bakerrisk.com and can send in their resume online. We have also
had a presence at the A&M recruiting fair for the past several years and plan to be there again this

Dr. Lowery,
We are always looking for young, motivated professionals. We are a mid-sized industrial contractor
($400 million/year) and do not perform any design engineering. Our emphasis is in attracting graduates
interested in construction management. In the past we have been less than successful in this endeavor
with Aggie CE's, as most want (understandably) to pursue a career as a professional engineer. We have
tried to recruit construction science graduates, but their interests have been in the housing/commercial
sectors. I personally prefer to hire civil engineers because of the background/education they receive but,
as stated above, most are not interested in the nuts and bolts of building complex projects. For the right
person it can lead to a very rewarding career.
I have forwarded this letter to our HR department with instructions to send your Department our contact
information. While we do not hire a lot of project engineers each year, we are always hiring a few.
Hope this will help.

Hi Lee,
I’ve been in the USCG for the past 23 years and no openings for engineers, unless you wear a uniform.
Before that, I was looking for oil in Alaska. Before that, I was a structural engineer designing 500 man
camps for BP. My advice I give to young engineers is to speak another language. In Canada, those who
speak English and French run the firms. In Europe, one must speak two languages in addition to their
native language, just to graduate from High School. Also, don’t be afraid to change to Plan B. (Plan A is
the way we’ve always done business). At this point in my career, I am doing energy audits (with an AE)
because that is where the work is at the moment. I know more about chillers, economizers, motion
sensors, heat pumps, light controls etc. then I dreamed possible. Hard to believe when I was going to
school, the two fields most sought after were aeronautical and nuclear engineering. Neither field of
which has a lot of potential in today’s climate. As I learned in graduate school, you must be willing to
change to survive. Sorry, I couldn’t offer more in the form of jobs. Thanks

I am working for Bechtel OG&C based out of the Houston office doing field engineering. I know
we have been hiring all kinds of college graduates in the past 6 months. I think something like
50+ college graduates. I don't have any direct contacts to give, but can give the advice of
applying online (that's what I did) at http://bechtel.com/careers.html. I also think we will have a
booth set up at the career fair.
We have a lot of great opportunities, particularly international work. I was hired in June and
spent about a month in the Houston office and I have recently moved to a project in Angola.
I will be here for about 6 months helping with commissioning and start-up of a 2 train LNG
facility. From here I will probably go to Australia to work on the construction of 1 of 4 LNG
plants for which we are the EPC contractor.
The opportunity for overseas work is here, but we also have Houston based positions (project

help fill the need in Australia and I will be sure to pass along any helpful information regarding
college recruiting.

Latest email (an earlier email from them is posted below):
Dr. Lowery,
Good to hear from you again and appreciate the opportunity to share information
once again on potential positions that the Engineer Research and Development
Center (ERDC) for the US Army Corps of Engineers continues to seek people for
employment.
The attached document is an e-mail that you and I exchanged about two years ago
concerning the type of positions that we continually are trying to fill within
the Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL). These are still valid as to
the type of work but would like to add a couple of items that need to be out on
the table to go along with this:
1) Each job description shows a point of contact which in most cases is a branch
chief. Since I started the role that I now have as the recruiting coordinator
for GSL back in late 2008 it has worked well to make me the point of contact as
individuals seek additional information about job opportunities. Because of the
nature of their work being a branch chief (BC) it has worked well to let folks
contact me and take some of that burden off the BC. My contact information (email and phone #) is listed below the signature line of the e-mail.
2) I also have activity involved with the 6 other laboratories that make up the
ERDC and can share people's interest with other laboratories within the ERDC.
3) ERDC is still in a hiring mode for the best and brightest engineers and
scientists (E&S) available in the jobs arena at this time. HOWEVER, it is
important to share that the success of the last 2+ years in our hiring programs
has been good and our needs are not nearly as great as they have been in the
recent past. That coupled with what we all hear daily in terms of budget cuts
and funding means our hiring will definitely be at a reduced pace in FY12. Our
focus will be on truly the best and brightest folks and this will also include
the recruitment of folks at the midcareer levels that are abundant in the job
market right now with the economic climate being what it is.
4) There are several places I would pass on as suggestions for coming graduates
to keep an eye to. Many government positions are advertised on www.USAJobs.gov.
I would make sure students routinely browse this site to see what may be
available. Also the federal government is in the process of developing some new
programs under the direction of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for the
government that is targeted at making it easier for recent graduates to find
employment with federal agencies. One of those programs that is entitled "RECENT
GRADUATE PROGRAMS" is due to be rolled out in late 2011 or early 2012. This is
intended to be available to students who are 2 years or less out of graduation.
Hope this will give you some additional information to assist you in your efforts
to advocate on behalf of your students. We continue to see Texas A&M as a very
strong program for E&S candidates and appreciate your keeping us before the
students in that regard. Feel free to pass on my contact information to anyone
who may be interested.
Let me know if I can help in any way.

Texas A&M University Zachry Civil Engineering Department,
My name is James Henry and I am a contract engineer currently working for the
Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL) within the Engineer Research and
Development Center (ERDC) for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, MS.
The focus of my activity is primary centered on providing assistance in the
recruiting efforts for GSL and ERDC in general. Dr. Bill Grogan who is the
Deputy Director for GSL asked, as you will note below, that I contact you with
some current information about where we are looking for folks in our recruiting
efforts at this time. GSL is very actively recruiting engineers and scientists
at all levels and in many disciplines of service of which Civil Engineering is a
primary one.
GSL:
The following is a brief description of the mission and overview of
"The Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL) serves the US Army and the
country by developing solutions to challenges in geotechnical and structural
engineering and related disciplines. The GSL mission focuses on military
engineering to develop innovative technologies for survivability and protective
structures, force protection, and maneuver support and on civil works engineering
to support water-resource infrastructure and geosciences. Research conducted in
GSL's nine branches encompasses the areas of soil mechanics, engineering geology,
near-surface geophysics, earthquake engineering, pavements, mobility and
trafficability of military vehicles, weapons effects and blast mitigation,
structural design and performance of structures under static and dynamic
loadings, earth dynamics, and the uses and performance of concrete, cement, and
other construction materials. Research in numerical modeling and computer
simulation involving the many areas of investigation is also undertaken."
Attached is a file which contains several job descriptions which cover the type
positions that are being looked at by the various branches for filling areas of
need with our organization. Our FY09 hiring has been steady and aggressive to
this point and we are currently beginning to focus on the FY10 activities and
although the specific job openings may vary this listing should give you and your
students a feel and the type positions that are available.
ERDC's efforts in recruiting engineers and scientists is aimed heavily at the
folks who have excelled in their academic careers as well as having an eye out
for talented folks with advanced degrees. To that point, ERDC typically is
looking for individuals with 3.5 GPA or higher in their major field of study. In
addition to the research and development areas where we are concentrated within
ERDC, there are numerous other organizations within the Army Corps of Engineers
such as the district and division facilities in various locations throughout the
country including the Vicksburg District of the Corps of Engineers. Most the
districts within the Army Corp are also hiring personnel. Two websites that give
additional information about the ERDC and GSL are as follows:
www.erdc.usace.army.mil
www.gsl.erdc.usace.army.mil
Hope this information will be of value to you and the fine students at Texas A&M.
We currently have a strong relationship with Texas A&M through a good number of
folks who are alumni of there here at the GSL facility. Would welcome the
opportunity to explore potential positions with those interested in this type of
career. My contact information is provided above.
Best Regards,
James Henry

Dear Sir,
As you may know, there have been several large earthquakes in Christchurch, New Zealand,
where I am based. In addition to the huge task of inspecting and analysing buildings to ensure
their safety, over 1000 buildings will need to be rebuilt. As well as this, a huge ammount of
infrastructure (roads, water supply, stormwater and sewerage) have been badly damaged.
Further, geotechnical engineers are undertaking a huge study to determine the extent of shaking
and liquefaction damage, and attempting to establish future risk. As you can imagine, civil
engineers are at a premium.
I know its probably a little out of their way, but some of the more adventurous Aggies may be
able to find work with one of the consultancies, construction companies, local authorities
etc. involved in the rebuild. I would suggest google searching "Christchurch civil engineering
jobs" or similar, due to the wide range of jobs available.
Please contact me if you have any questions, and good luck to the students in finding jobs.
Thanks and Gig 'em,

ExxonMobil is hiring. Students should look at the ExxonMobil website for
information and applications. They should also look to interview on campus, as
the campus recruiters will try and match interests with business needs. Our
hiring criteria remains similar to previous years and we look closely at overall
GPA and relevant experience.
In my particular area, ExxonMobil Development, we are hiring in both core
engineering disciplines as well as engineers interested in a career in Project
Management.
I would encourage the students to be as clear as they can regarding
what their interests are and what they are not.
Great to hear from you.
Hope all is well.

Howdy Dr. Lowery,
Thank you for reaching out for the CE students. These are unusual and changing times. My company’s
current list of available positions is here: http://www.otie.com/careers.php?page=jobs
In addition to these, we're always looking for skill sets that match the diverse opportunities we come
across. Oneida Total Integrated Enterprises (OTIE) is an engineering, environmental, and construction
company (www.otie.com). Our San Antonio office primarily works with Department of Defense clients.
I would encourage students to seek internships and employment opportunities with contractors
performing federal work or members of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME)
(http://profile.same.org/search/). Visiting these companies websites, sending resumes, and calling or
visiting to learn their current needs will help their chances. Timing is everything so the earlier they apply
the better employers can determine if or how to use their skills. The smaller companies may be harder
to find or not present at career fairs, but a simple Google search will bring up most if not all in any given
location.
I hope this helps.

Dear Dr. Lowery,
I graduated from TAMU Civil Engineering in 2002. These are indeed tough times. The company I
currently work for is called Ocean Dynamics, LLC. As of two years ago, we were purchased by a Dutch
shipping company called Dockwise BV (www.dockwise.com).
Before we were bought, we specialized in structural and marine engineering (and design) of offshore
fixed production platforms, towers, and floating semi-submersibles and spars. Now we have also added
to our bag of tricks: barge engineering and design, heavy transport vessel modifications, transportation
and installation engineering of offshore platforms (both fixed and floating).
Our company is located in Houston, TX and we comprise of mostly Aggies (~80%). Our sister company
under the same roof is roughly 99% Aggies. Last Spring, we were registered with the TAMU Career
Center, and were able to hire a couple interns and a recent graduate. One of the interns was from
TAMUG. We do our best to look after our fellow alumni.
Please find my contact information below:

If we have any openings, we will be sure and re-register with the TAMU Career Center. Also, some
advice to students is to sign up for a LinkIn account. This is an excellent way to network professionally
with employers and former students.
Best Regards,
Nathan

Hello Professor Lowry,
Thank you for your note. I hope you know that your training back in 1969 to 1973 paid off for me. After
graduation I began my civil engineering career in Dallas, then moved to Houston, where I worked for
several large engineering firms prior to starting my own firm in 1985. Over the next 23 years, Claunch &
Miller, Inc. Engineering Consultants became a very successful civil engineering firm specializing in
Municipal engineering and in 2008 accepted an offer of acquisition from HDR Engineering. ( A
nationwide firm of 8,000 employees)
Now as Senior Vice President and Managing Principal of the Houston HDR office I often talk of how
valuable my education at Texas A&M was. We have hired many Aggies over the years and look forward
to hiring many more.
The answer to your note is—YES we do have job opportunities at HDR Engineering. I would be happy
for you to pass along our name to graduating seniors and to those that are looking for internships prior
to graduation.
I wish you and the University all the best.
Sincerely,
Chris Claunch

It is good to hear from you. As you are aware, the job market is very tight. We are hiring but there is
much more scrutiny before a new hire is made. HDR hires for the long term and does not want to bring
people on board and then have to let them go.
HDR will attend the Engineering Career Fair and be in attendance in September. We are always looking
for good Aggies.

If you are particularly interested in the following rather unusual field (for our students), and are
good at it, email me and I will consider forwarding it to them. Lowery@tamu.edu Remind me
to look for Brent Moore’s email.
Dr. Lowery,
Thanks for the email. I am always looking for good solid structural folks. The problem we have most of
the time is we are in the marine structural business so ship docks, marinas, wharfs, etc. are kind of
foreign to most students. We are always interested in those who have a good foundation in structural
and geotech since most of what we do involves deep foundations supporting concrete, steel or timber
decks.
I am directly involved in hiring with my company and specifically the Ports and Harbors Group along the
Gulf Coast. I have counterparts on the East and West Coasts as well. I also work directly with our senior
recruiter to fill positions.
Please feel free to throw our name in the hat. I’ll be glad to chat with you to inform you of “where to

country but gain valuable experience in engineering, project management,

If people choose not to call but would rather "surf" for opportunities I have

Permanent/Intern. Perry graduated in ‘86. If you are interested in this, send me your
resume and I will forward it to him if I think it is “Top Gun” (his term). I told Perry that I
remembered his chasing girls during class rather than listening to my lectures. His
response:
Dr. Lowery,
First of all, I would like to say that I have no recollection of what you speak. I remember being
in class early and leaving late to ensure that I fully understood all that was being taught by my
superior professors (At least that is what I have told my kids).
I have been with SBM Atlantia for the past 10 years. We are an EPCIOO (Engineering,
Procurement, Construction, Installation, Operator, and/or Owner) global company in the deep
water Oil & Gas industry. We have 4 cost centers around the globe in Monaco, Schiedam (The
Netherlands), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and here in Houston. Please have your students visit
our website at www.sbmatlantia.com to see if this line of work interests them. We have an intern
program that usually pays for housing and about $10-$12 per hour. My current position is
Operations Project Support Director in charge of Project Management Support, Contracts,
Project Controls, Document Control, and Regulatory Compliance. Our product line includes
FPSO, FSO, FPU, Semi, TLP, Drilling Semi, Drill Ships, and Buoys. We currently employ
approx. 550 in the Houston office and approx. 4.000 worldwide.
It is definitely a tough market to be graduating in. It is very similar to ’85, thus part of my
deciding to go to grad school. We do not generally hire many fresh grads, but I can definitely
help get the Top Gun Resumes in front of the right managers.

Prof. Lowery,
My group has a need for a geotechnical/soils mechanics person with a M.S. or

have an M.S. we have a tremendous program to support getting a Ph.D. So if you

As this would involve Military work (Army), they would need to be able to get a

Good afternoon, sir.
I am currently working for the Marines, and while there is plenty of work to be done, the

Dr. Lowery,
I hope that you are doing well. I manage the Geotechnical Engineering Department in Terracon’s
Houston office, which consist of about 20 people (12 engineers). Within the past year or so, I have hired
two TAMU engineering graduates, and would hire more if the economy allowed. I always keep TAMU
graduates in mind when pursuing new employees. I have been very pleased with the knowledge and
technical capability of the TAMU graduates that I have hired (about 10 hires over the past 15 years.)

Hi Lee,
Everything goes through our HR department in Tulsa first. New grads can contact them
directly, see the link to find more information on Hilti and contact
information. Graduates start in the NA corporate offices here in Tulsa, then with
experience move out to locations across North America... and beyond.
Hilti is a top 100 best employer for two years now. I have worked here for 23
years. We have some former Ags, some tea sippers and too many OU and OSU
engineers. Former Aggie football and professional player Ed Simonini '75 also works
here!
We currently have a position open in Austin for a CE (preferred) that has post graduate
experience. Any contacts you can direct to our HR department are welcome.

Dr. Lowery,
I hope all is well at TAMU. Life here at KBR is going well and I'm learning a lot very quickly.
This fall KBR will have a booth at the career fair, however Civil will be taking a lighter
approach that in recent semesters. We're pretty stocked on young engineers/new grads at the
moment, but will be seeking 1-2 more additions (as compared to 5-6 in recent semesters).
On Sept 12, KBR will be having an info session prior to the career fair. I'll be there to present,
but will not be at the actual career fair.
Currently on the career center website, there should be KBR jobs/positions posted. I am not sure
when the deadline is for students to submit their resumes, but our interview selections are due
back to A&M by Sept 7 with the actual interview day to be on Sept 14. Judson Juden (also class
of 2008) will be doing the interviewing.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can do anything or help out in any way!

Dr. Lowery,
Unfortunately I am not aware of any industry job openings as I am currently finishing up a
master's degree at the University of New Hampshire in environmental engineering and am
searching for a job myself. However, if any of your students are interested in venturing up north
for graduate studies I would be more than happy to lend them some help. My advisor was very
receptive in taking on an RA from Texas to diversify their graduate student population, as it is
normally largely made up of former UNH undergraduates and New Englanders. The RA position
doesn't pay much, but it was enough to get by. I can't guarantee that there will be an opening
since it's not up to me, but I do know that I will be finishing in December and my spot will likely
need to be filled. If any students would like further information, feel free to give them my e-mail.
The research is in drinking water treatment.
Best of luck to you and your students.

Dr. Lowry,
I joined Avocet Environmental in 2005 as my first full-time engineering position. I have enjoyed
my work with this company, and found it to be both challenging and rewarding. Additionally,
with all of the resources that this area has to offer, Southern California is a great place to live. I
received your email requesting job postings yesterday, and figured that I should relay this
position for your graduates to consider.
Avocet is looking to fill at least one entry-level civil engineer position. We are specifically
looking for individuals with strong communication and reasoning skills who can meet the
constantly changing demands of a small consulting firm. Our work consists principally of
environmental investigation and remediation, infrastructure-related civil engineering, and
construction management. Entry-level engineers (either BS or MS) will work closely with senior
staff and the partners on tasks related to each of these areas as project demands require. Some
projects will require travel, generally around southern California and the central coast areas. We
offer excellent salary and benefit packages, including medical insurance, 401k, and profitsharing programs, etc.
If you can put me in touch with any individuals you feel might fit our criteria, I would really
appreciate it.
Thanks, and best of luck with the upcoming school year.

Howdy Lee,
I did get my PhD in Civil Engineering from A&M a bit over 35 years ago. I am a Professor at the
University in Madrid and also run an engineering consultancy firm, where we are currently hiring.
But given our line of work all candidates must have a PhD or at least an MS, with strong
inclinations and some experience in numerical simulation of non-linear dynamics problems,
primarily structural but occasionally also in fluids. They must also be willing to live in Madrid,
Spain, and preferably speak some Spanish...
I do realize our demands give rise to an unlikely combination for good old ags, but if some fit the
bill do send me their CV's and we will study them. With the signature of this email you have our
webpage, never fully up to date but sufficient to give an idea of our activities.

Dr. Lowery,
Unfortunately, our firm does not currently have an employment opportunity available to recent
graduates.
However, we are always seeking students wanting to participate in the cooperative education
program. We prefer students that wish to engage with our company for a standard 3 term
commitment, but will accept students beginning their junior or senior years for a combined summer-fall,
or spring-summer commitment. We are a small firm with 20 to 25 employees, but we prefer to staff 2
to 5 co-op students throughout the year. We recruit nationally, and have had most success with
students from A&M and Purdue. We have also hired students from Iowa, Michigan State, Cincinnati,
Georgia Tech, t.u., and Texas-Arlington in the past. These schools were chosen because they have an
established co-op program to some extent.
However, Purdue and A&M have the most structured program compared to all of these schools. But
Purdue sets itself apart. They do an excellent job of marketing/encouraging the co-op experience to
their students, and hold a career fair specifically for co-ops each year. They also tailor the curriculum so
students can participate in the co-op program. We feel that A&M’s career center does a very good job
of helping students find co-op opportunities, if the student seeks it out. However, our experience is that
most students don’t have a clue what the program is or what it can offer. We attend the engineering
career fair every year, and we spend most of the time educating the students on what the co-op
program is, and how it is different from an internship. It is somewhat frustrating because instead of
marketing our company, we end up marketing the co-op experience to the student, and most aren’t
prepared to discuss the opportunity our company provides.
We actually use the co-op experience for our full-time hires. Since 1998, ever full-time hire at G&M has
been a former co-op student. It gives us an opportunity as a company to introduce the student to our
field, train and groom them for full-time employment, and basically have an 8 to 12 month interview
process. For students that don’t receive full-time offers from our company, most have an easier time
finding employment upon graduation, because of the experience they received. I don’t recall a single
student that had a trouble finding a job upon graduation after completing their co-op experience with
us.
We extended offers to 2 Aggies this last spring that we thought were highly motivated and interested in
the program. One decided the time was not right, and the other accepted the position, and a week
before the term was to begin called to decline. Both of these students were starting their sophomore
years, and I believe it is difficult for them to realize the opportunity in the beginning of their collegiate
career. That is where I feel the university could help students with increased guidance and education.
Obviously there are many graduates and former students seeking employment given the current state of
our national economy. I’m willing to bet that students with co-op experience probably have a higher
success rate of employment, regardless of their grades, than the students who did not participate.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback from you on how we can help market this opportunity more to
students. Also, if you know of any candidates that would be interested in an opportunity, we would
appreciate any leads.
I appreciate your time and consideration with this matter. Please feel free to call or email me at the

Dr. Lowery,
I have spoken with a few people about job opportunities for civil engineering graduates at Burns &
McDonnell (BMcD). One of these individuals was a college recruitment specialist from our home office
in Kansas City, MO. She informed me that, currently, BMcD is not seeking entry-level civil

students a specific requisition to apply to and know more about our forecasted needs for the fall. That
being said, I work in our Houston regional office and know that we currently have two positions open for
civil engineering graduates: an Assistant Civil Engineer and an Assistant Transmission Engineer. For
those students that attend the ASCE meetings, they might remember a meeting back in February where

Dr. Lowery,
Thank you for the e-mail regarding civil engineering opportunities. We are a structural design
firm and presently, are not hiring. I do not believe our affiliate company Walter P Moore is
hiring right now either. I did inquire at Haynes Whaley Associates, since they have been
successful on some large projects in the Houston area. From my discussions with one of their
representatives, they are not presently hiring either, but would suggest staying in touch.
The petrochemical industry and large companies are who I would be approaching. Some of
these would include: Jacobs, Parsons, Bechtel, KBR, URS, CH2M Hill, AECOM, Technip,
Noble Denton to name a few.
If they are looking for structural positions, I would also recommend that they have their Masters
Degree. Many firms are requiring that as a prerequisite as well.
It is tough out there right now. I wish your students the best of luck.
Hope you are doing well, and let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Lowery@tamu.edu
Dr. Lowery,
I thought at first that I wouldn’t be of much help to you because I’ve been working as a Drilling Engineer,
not a Civil (most of whom working for Chevron are labeled as Facilities Engineers) almost since
graduation.
Rowan Co’s didn’t have enough structural engineering work to keep me busy full time, so I started helping
out on the Drilling side of the fence and after 18 months or so the Drilling Manager told the Construction
Manger “You can’t have him back, he’s mine.” and I haven’t gone back to construction/facilities but for a
couple of months since then.
This is just proof that you don’t go to college to learn what you’re going to do for the rest of your
life, you go to college to learn how to think on your feet, solve problems, and manage your time
and money (and eventually other people’s time, money, and projects).
That having been said, however, there is little or no reason that other CE’s can’t work in Drilling as well
because most of what we do is learned on the job anyway, not in college. (Most Pet.E. departments are
focused on reservoir engineering – about half of us in Drilling came from other engineering backgrounds
(Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical being the most common). (CE’s, OE’s, and ME’s all have a better
background in fluids than most Pet.E’s do anyway.)
I could refer you to some others on the Facilities side of the fence (Tim Barrett and others), but they
should be on the Former Student mailing list as well.
If, however, you have any upcoming graduates who are interested in learning something different
(or just continuing to learn period), then I can do some checking and find out who they need to
talk to (most emphatically NOT HR) to get hired into the Drilling Dept. at Chevron.
They need to be aware, however, that – if trained correctly – they won’t graduate and move into a corner
office on the 50th floor in a major city. Their office for the first 2 to 5 years is likely to be on a rig
somewhere, quite likely in the middle of the ocean working either 14 days on 14 days off or (better yet)
28/28, with their bedroom right next door.
It’s not all bad, however, as the long term benefits are good, it pays well, it’s very rarely boring (because
we’re dealing with Mother Nature), and the opportunities for travel are high (I’ve lived and worked in the
continental US, offshore US, Mexico, Thailand, China (PRC), Azerbaijan, Nigeria, and are currently sitting
in the middle of jungle on the island of Sumatra and have 25 or 30 other countries available once the kids
head off to college).
There are still benefits for them even during the training and break in years – the travel time comes out of
your time off, but 28/28 rotators basically work 7 months a year and are totally and completely off (but still
getting paid), the other 5 months. Some people decide that they like the 5 months a year off so much
they choose to become rotators for life.
So if you have any upcoming graduates who are interested in branching out, cross-training a bit,
and trying something a bit different than what they thought they were going to school for; let me
know and I’ll find out who the hiring managers are in Drilling back there in the States.
Thanks & Regards,
John F. Faseler

Dr. Lowery,
Thank you for your note and it was good to hear from you. I am sorry I did not get back to you sooner,
but I needed to do some checking on current job openings within Luminant, specifically for civil
engineering graduates. Luminant is currently evaluating recently released EPA air regulations, which go
into effect January 1, 2012. Due to this situation, there is some uncertainty about what positions will be
available in the future. There are a number of civil engineering folks who graduated from A&M here at
Luminant Mining. Many of these former students remember taking a class with you, including David
Yeager (class of 2006 I believe) who just joined our team last year. In any event, our campus recruiter
has told me that Luminant will be on the A&M campus next week for the Engineering Career Fair. If you
know of someone who may be interested in Luminant, please encourage them to stop by, and maybe
have a resume handy. If I find out any additional information before then, I will let you know.

-I was hired in January 2010 for the "Operations management"-Engineering Associate program. They
have a lengthy year and a half long training period and its not a "hit the ground running" kind of situation
when you start. You do not really need any previous experience but Union Pacific wants you to show
leadership and management characteristics as well as confidence when interviewing.
This is not a design job its more of a project manager position. You will be outside a lot on railroad
tracks and need be willing to work long hours when its required. Starting Pay is $57,000 and you receive
about $5000 in raises before your first year is over.

Dr. Lowery,
Hope all has been well in Aggieland. I got your email about trying to find a home for
some of the recent graduates. I discussed it with my partners and we are ready to bring
on a bright young E.I.T. Just a little about ourselves, our firm is called KFW Engineers
and Surveying. We are mainly a private land development civil engineering firm located
in San Antonio and currently have 24 employees. We just hit our 5 year mark. Two of
my partners are Ags and the fourth is a Longhorn.
We are looking for the best and the brightest so I would say a minimum GPR of 3.2. Of
course any type of work experience is a plus, especially if they had any AutoCAD
skills. It would also be nice if they had ties to San Antonio or South Texas. We have
found that family issues are a prime reason people leave firms and we really want
someone who will be with us a long time.
If you don't mind, please send me some potential candidates that you think are qualified
and we'll get them set up with interviews.
Thanks and let's beat the hell outta everyone on the schedule!

Howdy Dr. Lowery!
It’s a crisp, cool morning here in Midland, Texas. I wish I could’ve gone to the game this past
weekend, but life got in the way. That’s the first home game I’ve missed in 5 years. I suppose
graduating can do that to you.
I just wanted to pass this information on to you for any students looking for jobs. I’m not sure
what positions are currently available at Parkhill, Smith, and Cooper, Inc., but it could never hurt
to look into it and apply, especially since the application is online. This is a great company with
good, wholesome people. Work is busy, so I’m sure they might be able to fit one or two more
engineers in at the various office locations (or interns!!!).
Hope all is well in Aggieland!

I received the following email from an old friend last February:
“Dr. Lowery, hope all is well. Good news here. I think that Halff Associates will
need a couple of your graduates this May. Could you give me a list of 5 or so of
your best so I can contact them. I appreciate any thing that you can do to help
us. You will be proud to know that we have 75 aggies here at Halff Associates
now. Also we are starting a scholarship program by the Aggie employees here to
fund an additional annual scholarship for TAMU Civils. Look forward to hearing
from you.”
They hired 7 students.
“Dr. Lowery,
I just got the following email (9/30/11):
Hoping that this finds you well. The 7 kids that you sent me in May have settled
in and are performing wonderfully. Looks like we will likely need a couple more
this December. Can you go thru the drill again and send me some more good general
civil engineer resumes. Thanks for all you do for the kids and for A&M.

If you are interested in this company, Google them and see what they do. See if
that is what you want to do and are capable of doing it. They have asked me to
screen the resumes and send them the best two. If you are still interested, send
me an impressive resume with the following subject line
Halff Associates Resume - Your Name
Note that they are interested in December graduates, but will probably consider
recent grads or experienced engineers. State clearly when you will graduate.
Your resume should emphasize your interest, experience, and capabilities in their
areas of expertise.
I would highly suggest that you include a photo on your resume, not limit it to
one page, and include your references. “References upon request” just delays
their ability to impulse buy.
Good luck,

1,200,000 CY of embankment. There is approximately 440,000 CY of concrete in the paving and
structures. The project has 26 bridges including two signature hybrid girder / cable stay (Extradosed)

and I am told only the third in the nation. This will be a landmark project and an excellent opportunity for

Subject: Williams commitment to double the number of engineering interns for 2012 - Your assistance is
needed
Williams has agreed to participate in the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. In doing so, we
have joined the Jobs Council initiative to increase the number of U.S. engineering graduates by 10,000
per year. As a result of this commitment that we have made, we plan to double the number of
engineering interns that we will hire in summer 2012. Your HRBPs will be contacting hiring managers
this week to gather summer placements for these additional interns.
To make our goal a reality, we need your assistance with the following:
1. Ensure that your leaders are aware of the company initiative and encourage them to think
creatively about how we can accommodate a larger intern class while still providing meaningful
work.
2. Reiterate the need for a quick response regarding the placement of these interns as we need to
finalize our planning for fall recruiting which has already begun and runs through the end of
October.
3. Support and encourage your employees who participate in the recruitment process. Williams
recruits on nine college campuses near our employee bases across Williams. We utilize alumni
teams and hiring managers to assist College Relations with career fairs, on-campus and on-site
interviews and other campus events. Their continued participation is vital to the success of our
college recruiting program.
Another way that Williams is demonstrating our commitment to increase the number of U.S. engineering
graduates is through our participation in the Business Roundtable. The Roundtable has long advocated
increasing the number of U.S. graduates who earn bachelor’s degrees in science, technology,
engineering or mathematics (STEM) as a way to increase the productivity, competitiveness and job
creation potential of the U.S. economy.
Alan Armstrong and the Executive Officer Team fully support this program. We are already making an
important difference in U.S. engineering education by providing internships to promising engineering
students, which have proven highly effective in boosting engineering student recruitment and retention –
a critical skills need for Williams.

Note that a contract position means you work until the job ends and you’re gone. Long term can indeed
mean long, or not, probably no benefits but often also means pretty high pay since most people want
more stability in their lives. Can often serve as entry to a permanent job, plus you get experience.

BETTER METHOD. BETTER TALENT.
Engineers In High Demand In Federal Government, Expert Says.
The US News and World Report (10/19, Salpeter) "Outside Voices Careers" blog reported, "While tax and revenue
shortfalls have affected essential government services," Heather Krasna, director of career services at the Evans
School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington, "says about 60,000 people are slated to retire from
government jobs by the end of this year. Some agencies are replacing these workers, despite slashes in funding, so
there continue to be jobs in the pipeline." Krasna said that engineers are in high demand.
A November 2010 Executive Order from the President makes it slightly easier to apply for
government positions via USAJOBS.gov. The special resume format, including what was
known as “KSAs” (which stands for knowledge, skills, and abilities) is no longer required,
which should make applying for federal positions less cumbersome for job seekers.

Dr. Lowery,
Please find attached a posting for an entry level structural engineer. I am sending this in response to the
request you sent out in August. I would appreciate your help in distributing this to other professors who
teach structural related courses. My hope is that the structural professors could assist in identifying
candidates who would be a good fit for the position.
Audubon has recently participated in career fairs on several campuses. Unfortunately, most of the
resumes I received did not have a structural focus. I do have one excellent Aggie prospect, but hope to
identify a few more. Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. We are currently
recruiting for December and May Graduates.

Dr. Kohutek,
I hope you are doing well. I’m not sure if you remember me, but I took your steel design class a few
years ago. I’m now working for Kiewit Offshore Services where all we work with is heavy steel
structures. I get the opportunity to design some really wild operations. Our department designs all the
temporary construction and lifting aids for fabrication. We also design the transportation of the
structures onto barges/ships, and finally the lift of the structure onto a topside using our HLD (Heavy
Lifting Device).
We currently have 3 very large projects being fabricated in our facility with our clients being Shell,
Chevron, and Noble Energy. Some notable structures being fabricated are the 700’ long 20,000 ton
jacket that we are fabricating for Noble Energy and a 250’ long x 50’ wide x 60’ tall, 5,000 ton Living
Quarters (first attachment) for Shell. There are plenty of opportunities here for graduating Civil
students, and we are constantly looking for good engineers. We currently staff near 150
engineers. Mostly field engineers, but we have a small group (10-15) that works heavily with steel
design.

The following is specifically for an internship, but they note they have just received two large
unexpected municipal projects, so there may also be other opportunities there. NOTE on this one that
the web site says it is for summer interns, but they are actually looking for Spring interns right now.
Are you still there, and are you still the person to ask about potential interns?
I realize this is very late in the year to ask, but are you aware of any students who are in
need of a soils and materials engineering internship for next semester (spring 2012)? We
typically do not hire for the spring, but we have just received two large unexpected
municipal projects due to the business failure of one of our competitors (which was

Good Morning!
You probably don't remember me - I graduated in August 1994 with a general civil
degree. I have seen some emails you've sent out regarding new graduates looking
for work - they've been forwarded to me by Melanie Waltman.
I work for Nathan D. Maier Consulting Engineers in Dallas. We have approximately
45 employees, and do Water Resources (H&H), transportation, water/waste water,
structural and survey. We are looking for an EIT for our Water Resources
department, preferably with 2-3 years experience, and experience in unsteady 2-D
modeling. We would consider a recent graduate if they are the right fit for our
company. We do a lot of stream restoration projects, erosion control projects,
flood studies, drainage studies, LOMRs/CLOMRs, etc... I do a little bit of storm
drain design but "transportation drainage" is not a big part of what we do.
If anyone contacts you looking for work who you think would do well with the sort
of projects I've mentioned (and who you feel comfortable recommending) will you
pass on my information, or have them mail their resume and a short letter to me?
Thanks!

Dr. Lowery,
I finally, somewhat miraculously, wound up with a real job. I figured I’d let you know about the
program by which I found myself there, in sufficient detail that anyone else who’s struggling to
find a job on graduating, as I was, can do so.
First off, the federal job website, as has been mentioned by other grads, is
http://www.usajobs.gov. USAJobs is a pain in the rear to manage, so I’ll save anyone who reads
this a little time. Civil grads should not limit themselves to simple “civil engineer” searches;
rather, people should try the advanced search. I recommend the following job series in the field
for the four-digit job series, based on my experience. Aggie civils should be proficient enough to
answer favorably on the questionnaires for the following:
0801 – General Engineer
0806 – Materials Engineer
0810 – Civil Engineer
8019 – Agricultural Engineer
Some grad students, specialized undergrads, or just people with a particular interest may be
interested in other fields; I’d recommend they peruse the OPM’s classification standards
(http://www.opm.gov/fedclass/html/gsseries.asp) before they submit the USAJobs form. Never
know what might pop up that you qualify for. As a geotech, I interviewed as a civil (0810), a
general (0801), and a soil conservationist (0457), and was listed as a best-qualified for soil
scientist (0470).
Mentioning “best-qualified” brings up the next step. Federal job applications are broken down
into unqualified, qualified, well-qualified, and best-qualified tiers. Under current circumstances,
only a very select handful of the best-qualified people are interviewed for most jobs. There are
simply too many out-of-work engineers willing to take a pay cut and a move for the jobs that
say, officially, that they want a BS and a year, or a Master’s and no experience. The
qualifications are sorted based mostly on online questionnaires, which also serve as the job
application in most cases. The level of detail in the questionnaires, in my experience, varies
directly with the level of expertise expected: a job as a dam engineer, tending one specific
hydraulic-fill clay-core dam, will ask very specific geotech and hydraulics questions. A job as
an intern who may be posted literally anywhere will ask if you’ve seen an engineer’s scale
before. My experience is that, as one of the lower performers in my class, the average A&M
grad should be willing to answer “very confident” or its equivalent, and provide direct references
to things he or she has done that fit that answer, either in their references or their transcripts.
The next stage is the actual interview; looking at it realistically, I’m a lousy interviewee, so I
have no advice to give there, other than that it’s unlikely that you’re going to overdress for a
face-to-face in the current competitive market, and a face-to-face is increasingly an expensive
luxury for government jobs, because most of them pay for travel to and from the interview. I say
“most” because I’ve had at least one, with the State Department, that did not. However, I can
state categorically that the Bureau of Land Management, the Corps of Engineers, and the
Department of the Army all foot the bill, and are surprisingly prompt in paying per-diem and
travel allowances.
Past this, it’s largely in the hiring agency’s hands. That’s the basic guide I’d give to anyone who
is trying to get a federal job right now. Now, some specifics:
-
-
-
-
The Department of the Army and the Corps of Engineers each run an annual
developmental intern hiring program. This fiscal year, the Army is hiring 40
developmental interns, who come aboard as full-time, year-round employees starting at
GS-7 and getting promoted annually to GS-9 and GS-11 by the end of the two-year
program. This is the CP-18 (Career Program 18, “Engineers and Scientists, Construction
Positions”) program.
Any such job will require a mobility agreement. Realistically, if there’s an office that
likes you at the end of your two-year internship, they will fight to keep you, even under a
hiring freeze and a drawdown. However, anyone who applies for it should be aware that
there’s a (slim) chance that mobility may mean overseas. That’s not all bad: the director
of DPW here’s immediate posting after his internship was Germany, and both Korea and
Camp Zama, Japan, are looking for people at the immediate post-intern level. It’s not all
good, either: the positions that have constantly been starving recently are in places with
hot temperatures and dust problems, plus occasional roadside bombs.
The Corps of Engineers requires a PE for certain positions in management and
leadership; the Army is less adamant about this, but all of my supervisory chain that’s not
in uniform (and the first three links of the chain are civilian) is licensed. There is
technically no requirement for engineers in federal jobs to have a license, but it’s
mandatory-voluntary. Once you’ve been in a civil slot past the internship, and you want
to move up, you better have a license, because if you don’t, someone else who does is
going in that slot.
The intern training program is extensively budgeted for travel and training; at least
working for the Army, you’re guaranteed to be spending much of the year in San
Antonio, where Installation Management Command (IMCOM) is headquartered, because
they run classes there that you will be required to take. Some of these classes will be
useful for PD or continuing education credit. Some of them, such as the class that
teaches how to fill out the Army’s job planning forms, will not.
Hopefully some of this is useful to someone who’s either new to the job market, or is smarter
than I was, and is looking during their last semester.
