Alyssa Weingart “Lake George in the Fall” Assignment: “Informative” speech Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the events that occurs in Lake George after “tourist season” (better known as the summer). Central Idea: I will be informing my audience about how Lake George isn’t just a tourist town in the summer, but in the fall, they have a variety of events to attend such as Fort William Henry, Oktoberfest, and cruises on the lake. Organizational Pattern: Topical Introduction I and II. It’s fall and you want to do something different. You’re over apple picking and talking about pumpkin spice this and pumpkin spice that is getting a little overrated. You want to get away. You want to go somewhere that is different than the usual fall weekend the normal person obsesses over. But where do you go? III. In this presentation, I will inform you about my hometown, Lake George, how it is still a beautiful place to visit especially when the summer months are over. IV. First I will be telling you about the adventures Fort William Henry has to offer. Then, we will take a look at Oktoberfest that happens in the village, and lastly, we will discuss the cruises that occur on Lake George. Transition: Let’s start off with Fort William Henry. Body I. Fort William Henry a. Ghost tours take place throughout the season the fort is open, which is typically from May until October. The best time to go on a ghost tour is during October because it will get you prepared for Halloween. According to Fort William Henry’s website, you get to see first hand the equipment that investigators use to research paranormal activity. FUN FACT- the fort was actually investigated on the SyFy channel’s “Ghost Hunters” and in the movie “Last of the Mohegan’s” which brings me to my second subpoint. b. Reenactment of the French and Indian war when I was home. The fort was used in this war, and in the reenactment, there was a battle and tents set up to teach people how food was made and what objects and shops looked like. I interviewed the man about what was going on and this is what he said (play interview or quote him). So, even when it isn’t tourist season, there are still activities and demonstrations the fort puts on in order to draw in business. Transition: Now that we have discussed Fort William Henry, let’s take a look at Oktoberfest. II. Oktoberfest a. This year it took place October 11th and 12th according to www.lakegeorge.com. During this time, they closed off Montcalm and Amherst Street for travel reasons in order to hold the festival. At the festival, there was live music and entertainment that included German and Bavarian Music. An Arts and Crafts show on Saturday, German food and beer and fireworks over the lake on Saturday. When I went there, in the tent were local and German beers and wine, a band playing folk music, and different vendors set up. It took place right in the middle of Canada Street (between the two closed streets) and people were drinking, laughing, and having a great time going in the shops that were still open and having fun conversing with people. Transition: Oktoberfest is always a blast, but only lasts for a weekend. Now I will be talking to you about the cruises that still occur during the fall season. III. Cruises a. Yes, cruises still occur in the fall. There are two different cruise ship companies. The first one is the Lake George Steamboat Company. These include the Minne-Ha-Ha, the Mohican, and the Lac du Saint Sacrement. You can see the fall foliage on these cruises and experience the Adirondack air right on the water. They also have a Halloween Cruise on the Lac du Saint Sacrement that includes a costume contest, prizes, food, drinks, and so much more. b. The second company is the Lake George Shoreline Cruises. This company includes the Adirondac or the Horicon ships for sightseeing and dinner cruises. On these ships, people can have weddings, private parties, and corporate events, unlike the other company. Conclusion I. II. Now that you have heard my speech on Lake George during the fall months, you have a new adventure waiting for you. First, we discussed Fort William Henry and the possibilities that occur there. Then we talked about Oktoberfest and lastly, we touched on the many cruises you can take during the fall months. III. So what are you waiting for? Ditch the pumpkin carvings and head to Lake George for an unforgettable fall voyage.
