10 UC/10-MCom,BCom(Hons)/3 UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha CUAP Proposal-New Qualification/Subject Section A Proposal Description Purpose of the proposal To introduce Human Resource Management as a new subject for the Degree of Bachelor of Commerce with Honours and for the Degree of Master of Commerce. Justification The College of Business and Economics has reviewed the existing 6 subject majors and 13 specialist endorsements within the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree. In light of this exercise, the Faculty proposes to discontinue the specialist endorsements and to replace them with a new, streamlined offering of 11 subject majors in: Accounting, Information Systems, Tax and Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management Science and Operations Management, Marketing, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, International Business, Human Resource Management and General Management. This major curriculum review was undertaken within the context of the College’s 2009-2011 Strategic Plan, which commits the College to continuous review of the BCom programme in order to ensure that the qualification is ‘attractive, relevant and academically rigorous’. The timing of the review was also prompted in part by the UC review of the BCom academic programme undertaken in 2009, and the ongoing transition to 15 point common course sizes at UC, to be completed by 2011. Against this backdrop, and in addition to the BCom Major in Human Resource Management being proposed, this application seeks to introduce the BCom(Hons) and MCom postgraduate qualifications in Human Resource Management, to reflect the importance of this discipline area.. Acceptability This proposal has been developed by members of the Organisation and Leadership Development (OLD) group and has been considered and approved by the Management Department. Feedback has been sought from the following individuals and organisations and responses are available in Section B: Within the University of Canterbury Academic colleagues within the Commerce Faculty All other Faculty Deans, College PVCs and Academic Managers The University Library The University Centre for Teaching and Learning The University Information and Communication Technology Services Facilities Management Student Recruitment and Development Unit The Academic Quality Assurance Unit (AQUA) The University of Canterbury Students’ Association Current BCom enrolled students External Consultation All NZ Business School Deans The College of Business and Economics Advisory Board members Goals of the programme The goal of the programme is to build on the B.Com major in Human Resource Management by enabling students to undertake more advanced academic study in this subject area. The programme is designed to produce graduates who are competent reflective practitioners in the field and who have the necessary background and skills to undertake graduate level research. Graduate profile The BCom(Hons) and MCom Part 1 graduate profile adopted by the Faculty of Commerce comprises the following four learning goals: GOAL 1: GOAL 2: GOAL 3: Graduates can demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of current theoretical concepts and frameworks within their major discipline. Graduates are able to think logically, analytically and critically with respect to the academic literature in their major discipline. Graduates can plan and carry out a supervised programme of academic research that shows a sound 1 10 UC/10-MCom,BCom(Hons)/3 understanding of ethical practice. Graduates are able to synthesise academic or professional literature and effectively communicate research orally and in written form. Each of these learning goals will be addressed with the creation of a BCom(Hons) and MCom Part 1 in Human Resource Management, with Human Resource Management being the focal discipline of study. Outcome statement GOAL 4: These will be the same as for Human Resource Management students already completing the existing BCom(Hons) or MCom Part 1 in Management, although their chosen discipline will now be clearly identifiable as a major (distinct from Management). Programme overview Students entering the programmes will have to meet the following criteria: (1) B+ average or better across 90 points of 300-level courses in the Human Resource Management schedule. (2) A pass in MGMT 280 or equivalent. The programmes will consist of four courses, each worth 15 points (0.125 EFTS), Research Methods in Management worth 30 points (0.25 EFTS), and a Management Research Project worth 30 points (0.25 EFTS). Students will take three core courses in the main subject areas of the degree: Human Resource Management. They will take one additional course, which they may select from the options available in Management or Marketing. All students will take Research Methods in Management in their first semester of study, which will prepare them in qualitative and quantitative research methods and in research design, and help them produce a Research Proposal. This research proposal provides the basis for the individually supervised research project that students will undertake in their second semester of study. Proposed new regulations and prescriptions (see Calendar Form at the end of Section A) Proposed teaching/delivery methods The proposed qualification draws on existing courses offered by the Department of Management. Teaching will primarily be through classroom contact using lectures, seminars, and student led discussion. In MGMT 680, students will work on a written project under the supervision of an academic staff member. It will be a campus based programme, with online facilities complementing rather than replacing regular classroom contact. Assessment procedures Both internal assessment and formal examinations will be used for assessing student performance. Multiple assessors (from within the Human Resource Management group) will grade the MGMT 680 research project. Predicted student numbers/EFTS Between 5-10 per year based on current enrolments. This may rise due to the increased visibility of a distinct BCom (Hons) MCom Part 1 in Human Resource Management. There is no intention to limit enrolment numbers. Resources No additional resources are required as a result of this proposal. Plans for monitoring programme quality Programme quality will continue to be monitored according to existing Faculty and University processes and policies. Confirmation that Section B has been prepared and is available to CUAP on request Yes.
