CUAP Proposal-New Qualification/Subject
Section A
Proposal Description
Purpose of the proposal
To introduce International Business as a new subject for the Degree of Bachelor of Commerce with Honours and for the
Degree of Master of Commerce.
Justification
The Commerce Faculty has reviewed the use of 6 subject majors and 13 specialist endorsements within the B.Com
degree. In the light of this exercise, the Faculty proposes to replace the specialist endorsements with a new suite of 11
subject majors in: Accounting, Information Systems, Tax and Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management Science,
Marketing, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, International Business, Human Resource Management and Management.
This proposal is the result of a comprehensive curriculum review which was prompted in part by the strategic decision
taken by the University to introduce 15 point common course sizes from 2011. The Faculty has taken this opportunity to
introduce new subject majors in key subject areas within the Commerce discipline, which also align closely with
established teaching and research groups within the constituent departments of the Faculty. These changes will
significantly strengthen the overall academic coherence of the UC Bachelor of Commerce degree and render the
programme more attractive to students – especially international applicants - many of whom were confused by the status
of ‘endorsements.’
The purpose of this proposal is to enable students majoring in International Business to take a BCom(Hons) and MCom
degree also majoring in International Business. This will help us to market the programmes to students and to market the
graduates to the business community. In common with the BCom major in the subject area, these programmes aim to
produce graduates with integrated and multidisciplinary knowledge, skills and appreciation for international business
practice who have the ability to work across national boundaries. In addition, for those students who continue with PhD
degrees, the BCom(Hons) and MCom will give them the discipline knowledge of the field that will form a coherent building
block for research in their chosen specialist area. In this way, the degrees will facilitate students entering research
degrees in the subject, and hence support staff research.
The degrees draw on existing teaching and research expertise in strategic management and international business in the
Department of Management and on expertise in international trade and finance in the Department of Economics. They
also draw on existing expertise in qualitative and quantitative research methods from elsewhere in the Department of
Management.
The major complements other existing and proposed BCom Honours offerings within the Department of Management and
College of Business and Economics. Students may also specialise in Marketing, Human Resource Management,
Management, Management Science, or Strategy and Entrepreneurship.

Goals of the programme
The goal of the programme is to build on the BCom major in International Business by enabling students to undertake
more advanced academic study in this subject area. The programmes are designed to produce graduates who are
competent reflective practitioners in the field and who have the necessary background and skills to undertake graduate
level research.
Graduate profile
The learning outcomes from the programme align with the generic learning goals adopted by the Faculty of Commerce for
the degree of BCom(Hons) and Part 1 of the MCom:
GOAL 1
Graduates can demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of current theoretical concepts and
frameworks in International Business, in Strategic Management and in one or more specialist area of international
business, trade or finance according to their chosen elective.
GOAL 2
Graduates from the course will be able to demonstrate logical, analytical and critical thinking with respect
to the academic literature in International Business, in Strategic Management and in one or more specialist area of
international business, trade or finance according to their chosen elective.
GOAL 3
Graduates can plan and carry out a supervised programme of academic research in the general subject
areas of international business and strategy that shows a sound understanding of ethical practice.
GOAL 4
Graduates from the course will be able to synthesise academic and professional literature and effectively
communicate their research in business presentations and reports and in an academic research report.
Outcome statement
The programme is designed to produce graduates who are competent reflective practitioners in the field of International
Business and who have the necessary background and skills to undertake graduate level research.
Programme overview
Students entering the BComHons) or Part 1 of the MCom programme will have to meet the following criteria:
(1)
(2)
B+ average or better across 90 points of 300-level courses in the International Business schedule.
A pass in MGMT 280 or equivalent.
The programme will consist of four courses, each worth 15 points (0.125 EFTS), Research Methods in Management
worth 30 points (0.25 EFTS), and a Management Research Project worth 30 points (0.25 EFTS).
Students will take two compulsory courses in the main subject areas of the degree: Advanced Strategic Management;
and International Business. They will take one additional course, which they may select from the options available in
Management, Marketing, Finance or European Studies. The Finance courses will be open to students who have taken
specific prerequisite courses during their undergraduate studies in International Business.
All students will take Research Methods in Management in their first semester of study, which will prepare them in
qualitative and quantitative research methods and in research design, and help them produce a Research Proposal. This
research proposal provides the basis for the individually supervised research project that students will undertake in their
second semester of study.
Proposed new regulations and prescriptions (see Calendar Form at the end of Section A)
See Calendar form
Proposed teaching/delivery methods
The proposed qualifications draw on existing courses offered by the College of Business and Economics, except with
respect to the Research Methods and Research Project components, which are described in the programme overview. It
is to be a campus-based programme, with online facilities complementing rather than replacing regular classroom
contact.
Assessment procedures
Courses within the degree make use of a variety of assessment procedures including case analysis presentations, writing
business plans, and an individually supervised research project. The research project will be moderated by at least one
member of staff who is not also involved in supervising the project.

Predicted student numbers/EFTS
Based on recent enrolments in the existing programme, student numbers in individual courses can be expected to be
between 12 and 18. All of the courses in this programme also take students in related BCom Honours or MCom Part 1
degrees in order to make efficient use of the teaching time and expertise.
Resources
This proposal does not have specific impact on ICTS, library or other support facilities of the University. It draws on
existing discipline knowledge and staffing, and existing, established courses.
Plans for monitoring programme quality
The Department will establish a monitoring group to collect information on programme quality, retention, pass rates and
student satisfaction and to satisfy University review requirements.
