Anatomy and Physiology: It’s Not Just On Campus Anymore! Laszlo Vass Professor, Community College of Denver Hands On Labs Inc. Acknowledgements The Hands On Labs Team: Linda and Peter Jeschofnig Ron Krempasky Stan Carpenter The Conundrum of Online Science How do I give online students the same lab experience as on-campus students? This is a Simulating Conversation Simulations have traditionally taken the place of labs in online science courses. Students simulate the concepts and simulate the ideas of what the lab content. Problems with Simulation Disconnect between the concepts in lecture and the purpose of the simulation. Simulations do not provide practical laboratory skills or measurement, instrumentation, and analysis. Students are disengaged from the learning process. Simulations in A&P Most are Shockwave or Flash Based programs that show concepts but rarely ask students to do much. Simulated dissections can be expensive and incomplete. So, What’s the Answer? What is a LabPaq? Academically aligned collections of course specific science materials that allow anytime anywhere science experimentation. Why LabPaq? 100% Safety Record and Fully Insured Meet On-Campus Lab Objectives Easily integrated into existing curricula. Self-contained – Lab Manuals, Equipment, Supplies, Specimens, and Chemicals Real laboratory experiences designed to work around students schedules. Maximizes the use of precious lab space on campus. Application to Anatomy and Physiology Histology: Actual microscope work allows students to learn structure and relate it to function. Dissection: Alcohol preserved sheep brain, eye, heart, kidney and full fetal pig allow students to learn structures just like on campus courses do without the hazards of formaldehyde based preservatives. Applications for A&P Observations: Students can submit sketches and /or descriptions of drawings and observations to professors. Safety: All chemicals, specimens and equipment is easily disposed of and safe to use at home. Seamless Curriculum LabPaq manuals are written to follow the typical sequence of topics in each course. LabPaq’s allow the instructor to integrate the labs into their existing curricula with minimal adjustment and time. Instructors can use existing simulations, web sites and online diagrams they have already built. Flexibility is a wonderful thing! It’s the Real Deal “I have been teaching A&P for over 20 years and never thought it should be taught online. My colleague showed me the positive results from his online A&P course using LabPaqs. I am now one of the converts who say YES, you can do A&P online with a genuine handson experience using LabPaqs.” Dr. Marsha Bradley, Professor Ocean County College, NJ Student Preference Question: If you could take an online science courses with Hybrid Lab or LabPaq, which would you prefer? Student Preference 59% preferred 23% preferred Campus or Hybrid 9% preferred either.
