2016 INTERNATIONAL SUMMER WHITMAN INTERNSHIP GRANT

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Student Engagement Center invites eligible students to apply for funding through the Whitman
Internship Grant program. This important college initiative provides Whitman students with financial
support for high impact, professionally and academically relevant experiences in international non-profit,
for-profit, and government offices.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS


Designed for students who have significant experience, awareness, familiarity or existing
relationships with organizations or individuals outside of the United States.
Primarily designed for 2nd and 3rd year Whitman students who have developed long term
professional goals and have clarity about their academic goals or have established direction to
their studies and career plans. This program is not intended for students to begin an exploration
of an issue, industry or part of the world where they have a basic curiosity. International students
are advised to reach out to Kyle Martz and the SEC before applying for a grant.
Students must be in good academic and conduct standing with the College.
In order to qualify for the grant, the internship must be high impact, academically and professionally
relevant unpaid experiences.
 The internship must last 8 weeks at 20 hours per week during Whitman’s summer break (please
arrange an appointment with the SEC staff if you have questions).
 The Whitman Internship Grant provides a stipend of $3000 (standard deductions will be withheld); and an
additional $2000 is set aside for travel and housing expenses (student needs to provide receipts for these
expenses).
 We are funding internships awarded on a competitive basis. We are funding internships awarded on a
competitive basis. If you have already received two SEC-funded Whitman Summer Internship Grants, your
application cannot be considered for funding this time. We especially encourage applications from
students who have not received an internship grant before.


SAFETY AND SECURITY
Whitman students’ safety and security are of foremost importance. Therefore, this application requires
several steps to assure that effective research has been conducted on the location where the applicant is
seeking an internship. In addition, both the applicant and the applicant’s parent or guardian is required to
sign a release form as part of the application. It is also the student’s responsibility to acquire a visa –if
necessary, as well health and travel insurance. Please refer to pages 6 and 9-12 of the application for
further information. In addition, consistent with this focus on students’ safety and security internships
must be at organizations, businesses or government agencies that:
1) are established and financially secure and have websites that instill confidence in the reader, AND
2) have a connection to Whitman (via a member of Board, staff, or faculty, or alumni or parent)

APPLICATION COMPONENTS
Completed applications must have all four components submitted to be considered:
1. Application form (Google form) – (log in to Whitmail to access)
2. Application packet: short answers (2 pages) additional information (1 page) and resume (1 page)
combine as one document
3. Student-Supervisor Contract – signed and scanned
4. Unaccompanied Student International Internship Release form – signed and scanned
Label the documents in your application as: <ApplicationPacketLastName> (this includes your short
answers, additional information and resume); as: <StudentSupervisorContractLastName>; and

3-STEP APPLICATION PROCESS

With your potential supervisor determine the scope of the internship. (e.g. establish the job
description and responsibilities, the intended work schedule, and the supervisory and evaluation
process. This can be done remotely via phone or Skype).
Give or send your supervisor the “Supervisor Information” sheet, which outlines their
responsibilities (page 3).
Have supervisor sign the “Student-Supervisor Contract” and sign it yourself (page 4). (You will
email a signed copy to the SEC).
2. Now, fill out the following form:

SUPERVISOR INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR SUPERVISORS
The funds for the Whitman Internship Grant are allocated by Whitman College. Each student who is selected
to receive a funding grant will receive $3000 (standard deductions will be withheld) and additional financial
support for travel and housing expenses.
Students are eligible for this grant the summer following their sophomore or junior year, and in a few cases,
after their first year here at Whitman or during their senior year if they are planning on returning to Whitman
in the fall following the summer. They must be in good academic and conduct standing with Whitman College.
GUIDELINES FOR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES
1. Internships must be relevant to the educational goals and/or career interests of the student.
2. A student may not work for a relative.
3. In order to qualify for the grant, the internship must be unpaid.
4. Students must answer short answer questions as part of the application. The committee evaluating
the applications will be putting a great deal of weight on how the student describes the proposed
internship. You can help with this by providing the student with information about the organization, a
description of their responsibilities, how they will be trained, criteria and method of evaluation, how
they will receive feedback, and the amount of time they will spent with their supervisor.
5. Supervisors must sign the 2016 International Summer Whitman Internship Grant Student-Supervisor
Contract in support of the proposed internship position.
6. Supervisors are expected to provide regular feedback (e.g. written, email, in-person)

TRAVEL DOCUMENTATION AND INSURANCE
Please demonstrate that you have researched any visa requirements for the country in which your
internship will take place. If applicable, explain the visa process and the type of visa you would need.

Students studying abroad before or after the intended internship need to contact their study abroad
program as well as the embassy/consulate to insure that they can combine an internship and study abroad
experience.
The SEC does not handle the visa process and the health insurance process. Students are responsible for
their own visas and health insurance.
Note: Passports need to be valid for 6 months beyond the date the student plans to return to the U.S.
after the internship ends.

on health and safety issues country by country. Please explore the site and look up information about your
destination. Features include ratings of hospitals and clinics, cultural dos and don'ts, women's travel safety, prohibited

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS
To maximize your chances for funding, please carefully review the following criteria on which proposals will
be evaluated and prioritized. (Note – part of the experience of this internship is the application process, so the
quality, thoughtfulness and accuracy of your application will be taken into consideration!)
A. You must have been offered the internship before you can apply for the Summer Whitman Internship
Grant.
B. Applications are evaluated on the quality of how they are written and presented. Details and clear
explanations will greatly increase your chances of being funded. Carefully answer all questions on
application form. Please proofread before you submit your application!
C. Your proposed internship must be relevant to your educational goals or stated career interests. The
majority of your time at your internship should be spent in activities designed to stimulate learning
and gain experience.
D. You should receive consistent feedback and guidance from your supervisor. Be sure to include the
criteria for evaluation, including how often and what type of feedback will be provided by your
supervisor.
E. Evidence of your personal initiative and commitment to the position is also important. In your
application you should describe the process you went through to research, develop and obtain the
position.
F. Your supervisor must read the entire application and sign the contract.
G. Applications must be typed on a computer. You can download the application materials from the
Student Engagement Center website and blog post http://www.whitman.edu/student-life/studentengagement-center. (You can find additional help on our website. We also offer workshops and
individual career counseling).
H. Short answer questions should be written in your own words. Please do not copy information from
the organization’s web site or position description.

Insurance Requirements:
I understand that I am required to provide proof of medical insurance for the entire duration of my
experience and that I must obtain an International Student Identity Card which provides emergency medical
evacuation.

Release of Claims:

and forever discharge Whitman College, its employees, agents, officers, trustees, contractors
