Reflections
Reflection: Completing the WBS
Complete the WBS for planning a holiday by:
a) Estimating the resources required for each activity
b) Estimating the duration of each activity.
c) Estimating the cost of each activity.
Document your completed Work Breakdown Structure for going on a holiday in the table below.

Reflection - Gantt Chart Analysis
Having seen how the various task relationships, leads, lags and milestones have been depicted on a
Gantt chart, analyse the Gantt chart below and answer the following questions:
1.
What is the relationship between:

Task A and Task B?

Task A and Task C?

Task D and Tasks B & E?

Task D and Task E?

Task E and F?
2.
How much lead-time is there for Tasks B and C respectively?
3.
Is there any lag time depicted in this schedule? If so, where is it, and how long is it?
4.
Assuming the project commenced on 2/1/05, when did it conclude?
5.
Which tasks comprise the Critical Path?
6.
What does the black diamond represent?

Record of your work experiences relating to project managing project time
List and outline any projects in which you have been responsible for managing project time
In the table below record the evidence you can produce to indicate that you have undertaken the
activities covered in this unit. You should identify at least two examples of each one.

Examples of Evidence
Determination of schedule of
projects
Documentation produced as part
of managing projects such as


Managing team members in
relation to time management


Manage Project Time - Assessment Activities
The following Assessment activities must be completed, saved and submitted to your Assessor as part of
your final assessment for the course.
Element 1
Assessment Activity: Time management planning
Using a project that you are currently working on or one that you worked on in the past, obtain a copy
of the project scope statement.
Read the project scope statement then complete the following questions and tasks:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
How did the project constraints impact upon the time available to start and complete
the project?
How many schedules were proposed? Why was the one selected chosen?
What tools and techniques to be used for time management activities were documented
in the project scope statement?
What processes, policies and procedures for time management were documented in the
project scope statement?
Were there any underlying assumptions for the tools, techniques and processes used?
Give an example of one of them.

Assessment Activity: Resource estimation
In this activity, you will need to provide an example of a resources estimation you made when working
on a project you are either currently working on or completed previously.
You will need to provide a WBS and provide estimations for human, material and equipment resources
in a summary table similar to the one depicted below:

Element 2
Assessment Activity: Network Analysis
Given the WBS below, construct a PERT diagram, identify the Critical Path, and perform a network
analysis to identify the early and late starting and finishing times for each activity. Then answer the
questions below.
Assume the project commences on 1/7/09.
Task

What date does the project end?
What is the latest possible starting date for Task D?
What is the earliest possible finishing date for Task E?
Are there any gaps between the early and late starting times? If so, where are they located?
Are there any gaps between the early and late finishing times? If so, where are they
located?
How many days float is there?
Which tasks are critical to the project’s completion?
Which tasks are non-critical to the project’s completion?
Now develop a PERT diagram for a project that you are managing

Assessment Activity: Schedule variations
Provide a description of a time when you were working on a project and the project’s actual schedule
varied from the planned schedule.
Describe the nature of the project and the underlying reasons for the schedule variation.
Then answer the following questions:
a)
b)
c)
d)
How did you know there was a variation in the schedule?
What tools and techniques do you use to identify the schedule variation?
What action did you take to address the schedule variation?
Who was involved in carrying out these actions?
e) Was the action you took successful, and did it significantly impact on project objectives? How?

Element 3
Assessment Activity: Reviewing project time management
Using a completed project that you have been involved in, answer the following questions.







What time management tools, techniques and processes were used to develop, monitor and
control the project schedule?
How effective were they in enabling the project team to identify the current status and
variations to the schedule?
How effective was the process to deal with schedule variations over the course of the project?
What issues or problems with the use of time management techniques used throughout the
project (e.g. difficulties with software programs, lack of training in scheduling software, etc.)?
Describe one of these in detail.
Which time management tools and techniques did you find easiest to use? Explain why this was
easier compared to other tools and techniques used.
Are there any other tools, techniques or processes that you would recommend be used in future
projects? Which ones, and why?
Did you make any recommendations about time management techniques to your project
manager? What were they?
