ESHET Grant Programmes
Guidelines for project applications
One of ESHET’s objectives, as set out in its Constitution (Article 4.6.), is “to
promote collaborative research in the history of economic thought on a
European basis”. With this objective in mind, and being aware of the need to
provide financial support for the development of research activities undertaken
by its members, the Executive Committee of ESHET decided at its meeting of 14
May 2015 to continue 2 research grant programmes:
“ESHET grants” for research projects on any topic on the history of
economic thought, funded from the ESHET budget; and
“ECB grants” for research projects on the history of monetary theories,
policies and institutions, sponsored by the European Central Bank.
In addition, it was decided to launch a new grant programme:
“ESHET audiovisual resources grants” for projects that utilize
and/or produce audiovisual and Internet resources to provide education
in and promote the history of economic thought.
It is the aim of ESHET to foster innovative and small scale research initiatives
without the usual administrative and management costs associated with
international competitive research programmes. The principles and rules to be
considered are the following:


Each grant programme will fund 1 or 2 research projects, according to the
jury decision, taking into account the quality and merit of proposals
submitted. The jury reserves the right to make no awards in the event
that none of the proposals submitted are deemed worthy of funding.
The duration of each research project is 2 years maximum, with the
obligation to present a progress report at the end of the first year and a
final report at the end of the project. The duration of the “ESHET
audiovisual resources grant” is typically one year, with the obligation to

present a progress report halfway through the project and a final report
at the end of the project.
The funding of each project will be processed in 3 installments: 40% with
acceptance of the project; 40% after progress report; 20% after final
report.
The call for applications will be disseminated by 15 August 2015.
The deadline for the submission of application forms (which can found at
the end of this document) is 31 October 2015.
The decision of the jury will be announced on or before 14 December
2015.
The juries for the “ESHET grants” and the “ESHET audiovisual resources
grants” will be composed of three members nominated by the Council of
ESHET, taking into account a list of nominees presented jointly to the
Council by the Chair of the Council of ESHET and the President of
ESHET.
The jury for the “ECB grants” will be composed of four members
nominated by the Council of ESHET, taking into account a list of
nominees presented jointly to the Council by the Chair of the Council of
ESHET and the President of ESHET. One of the members will be
nominated after consultation with the European Central Bank.
These juries will be appointed following the close of grant submissions
and with a view to avoiding potential conflicts of interest in the award
process.
The assessment of the applications by the jury will be based on the
scientific merits and innovative features of the project, as presented in
the application form. Preference will be given to projects featuring
comparative approaches and enrolling young scholars. Proposals
involving inter-university or cross-country collaborations are particularly
encouraged.
The maximum grant budget for the ‘ESHET grants” and the “ECB grants”
cannot exceed € 20,000 each. The maximum grant budget for the
“ESHET audiovisual resources grants” cannot exceed € 10,000. The
juries retain the right to adjust the amount of the awards in the event that
multiple projects are funded. Such adjustments will be made in
consultation with the grant proposal authors and in light of budgetary
impact on the project’s viability.
For budget preparation, the eligible expenses include: travel costs for
archival research and participation in conferences; organization of
seminars and workshops; subcontracting services (English revisions and
translations, technical support on information technologies); research
assistance from PhD students and young post-doc scholars; and
institutional overhead up to a maximum of 10% of the total of costs
incurred. Salaries, fees and prizes are not eligible expenses.



Submission of applications for these research grants is open to ESHET
members only.
The research projects should commence between 1 January 2016 and 30
June 2016. Projects must be completed by 30 June 2018. The final
report, summarizing the results of the project and detailing expenditures
of grant funds, must be submitted to the Chair of the Council of ESHET
and the ESHET President by 31 July 2018.
The Executive Committee of ESHET will decide at the Spring 2017
meeting on the continuation of these grant programmes.
