St. Joseph’s Private Language School American Section SAT Information SAT Information: Dear High School Parents Welcome to another year at St. Joseph’s Private Language School – American Section. As your child gets closer to their graduation, the SAT exams play a major role in your child’s thoughts and actions. This letter is to give you some additional information that will help both you and your child succeed in their quest for higher education at a university of their choice. First off, please be aware that the registration and cost of taking the SAT exam is solely at the expense of the student’s family. St. Joseph’s School is not responsible for the registration for exams nor obtaining the exam results – this responsibility lies with you. . المدرسة غير مسئولة عن التسجيل لالمتحان او الدرجات وتقع المسئولية كاملة على عائق الطالبWe will remind and assist within the framework of the school’s curriculum, but you and your child must follow the Collegeboard’s and AMIDEAST’s rules and regulations. Why take the SAT? Both public and private universities of Egypt require the SAT exam for admission. The Ministry of Education has released minimum scores for the class of 2015 as AT LEAST a 1330 on SAT exams and 1000 for SAT Subject exams to be eligible for admission. For the class of 2016, the scores required have increased to AT LEAST a 1440 on SAT exams and 1100 for SAT Subject exams to be eligible for admission. Of course the higher the score the better your child’s chances are of gaining admission to the school of their choice. A perfect score is 2400 for the SAT and 1600 on the Subject Exams. Schools often only have a certain number of places they can offer each year, so it is essential that students continue to improve their scores and not just give up after reaching 1330. When to take the SAT? The universities of Egypt will ONLY accept SAT results taken during the 11 th and 12th grades. With that in mind, most 10th grade students first take the SAT at the end of 10th grade. This gives the student an idea as to their weak points and strengths to help focus of future exams. They then take the exam 3 -4 times during 11th grade, and another 3-4 times during 12th grade. If you and your child wants, they may take the SAT every time it is offered until they get a 2400 (perfect score) – but the way the test is created, there should be some time for learning in between taking the test. -1- School Year 2014-2015 St. Joseph’s Private Language School American Section Student Accounts See Ms Cyndy for assistance in setting up your student’s account with CollegeBoard. There are some sections that are very important and cannot be changed if entered incorrectly. In particular, it is very important that they enter their legal name, date of birth, sex, address and signature exactly the same way as their high school diploma / national ID card / passport will read. This can be done the beginning of grade 10, and Ms Cyndy will talk to the students about the process. Students can opt to get a daily practice SAT question, as well as have important reminders sent to parents’ email address. All students are requested to give Ms. Cyndy their user name and password for safe keeping. It is recommended that the user name and password NOT be the same as their email account. Having the user name and password has helped many students who left their information on their home computer when they were in Cairo or lost their telephone and needed to print out their admission ticket. Proper identification only consists of: A valid passport or your National ID Card. Remember that the name on all IDs must match the SAT Admission Ticket. Standby testing for the SAT Reasoning Test Standby testing is no longer available. The Collegeboard has implemented an online waitlist procedure for students who have missed the regular deadline. See the Collegeboard website for additional information. http://sat.collegeboard.org/register/how-to-register Getting your test results Approximately 3 weeks after the SAT exam, scores are available on the http://sat.collegeboard.org website. When test takers register for a test, by default they receive a student copy of the score, provided they did not cheat or there are no problems that would hinder the arrival of their scores to AMIDEAST. The Collegeboard sends students’ copies with an Egypt address to the AMIDEAST office. This usually arrive one to two months after the test date. The copies sent to AMID East (Cairo or Alexandria) and the Ministry of Higher Education are not accessible to test takers. The AMIDEAST copy is kept at AMIDEAST -5- School Year 2014-2015 St. Joseph’s Private Language School American Section in case the ministry did not receive their copy and they want to verify a test taker’s score. When you are ready to apply to university, you need to go to AMIDEAST's office to pick up your student copy and have it stamped. This should be done as soon as scores are received at AMIDEAST. Don’t wait until the last minute in case you cannot find your student copy. When you go to AMIDEAST, expect to pay LE 350 for receipt on the next day and LE 420 for rush service (to be received at AMIDEAST before noon and you receive it at 2:00 p.m.). Test takers stamp scores with the best section scores only. To make sure that the tests are available at the AMIDEAST office, check by phone or email Maggy Gamil mgamil@AMIDEAST.org and copy cairo-tcm@AMIDEAST.org. AMIDEAST Cairo, Egypt Address: 38 Mohie El-Din Abul-Ezz Street, Dokki, Giza PO Box 417, Dokki - Giza, Egypt Phone: +202-19263 | Fax: 02-33320413 Web: www.AMIDEAST.org Facebook: www.facebook.com/AMIDEAST.EGYPT Twitter: www.twitter.com/AMIDEAST_EGYPT Students should not wait till the last moment because they fall into the trap of not finding their scores at AMIDEAST . Please see Ms Cyndy if you fall into this problem area. Take the "official" stamped SAT results to the university along with your admission application. Preparing for the SAT Reasoning Test As part of St. Joseph’s desire for your child to be well prepared for the SAT Exam, 4 classes each week will be devoted to SAT preparation – 2 for Math, 2 for Critical Reading / Writing. This is in addition to their other classes each week for English (Literature, Vocabulary, Grammar and Writing), Math, Science, and Social Studies courses where the students are practicing Critical Reading and Writing Skills. The SAT is only one part of the admission criteria, class grades are also important. Students are reminded that they should not neglect their other classes’ work in order to study for the SAT. High School students will be allowed 1 day off after the SAT exam to travel to Cairo and come back, but only upon presentation of SAT Admission Ticket. Any other absences will be counted as un-excused and may impact on the students’ final grade. Both the SAT and class grades are important. Remember that 40% of the points required for admission to universities come from your GPA and 60% from your SAT scores. If you study well for your classes, you will also be studying for the SAT at the same time. -6- School Year 2014-2015 St. Joseph’s Private Language School American Section Once again, I’d like to restate that St. Joseph’s Private Language School is not responsible for either the registration or the reports of the SAT Exam. I will, however, be glad to explain the process to either your child or yourself. Sincerely yours, Ms Cyndy School Administrator, American Section -7- School Year 2014-2015
