We are entering the last four weeks before seniors go on internship, so it is very important that those seniors choosing to go on an internship don’t allow spring fever or senioritis to take hold. Juniors should be focusing on upcoming ACT testing which many will be taking place this month (4/13) or in early June (6/8). Sophomores have recently completing the grueling march through five Ohio Graduation Tests (Reading, Math, Writing, Science, and Social Studies) and I am happy to report that I was very impressed with their focus and approach to the tests this year. Freshmen should have their feet solidly under them now that they are beginning the fourth quarter of high school. Many are already looking forward to their sophomore classes and first shot at Advance Placement classes in both United States History and Biology. The building of the master schedule also begins this month and soon students will be scheduled into their classes for next year. We will be sending home a “requested class” list to parents this month. This is a list of classes that your student has requested for the 2013-2014 school year. Typically it will match the actual schedule in the fall, but occasionally a student is locked out of a class and will need to choose a second option. If that is the case, the student will be called down to the guidance office to select another class option prior to the end of this school year. There is much planning and commitment of resources to the process of building the master schedule and supporting the established curriculum, so it is very important that your student commit to taking the classes in the fall that were requested in the spring. Summer school applications are now available in the Harmon main office, A.H.S. main office, and on the A.H.S. website. There will be two sessions offered this summer. The first begins June 4th and ends June 24th while the second begins June 25th and ends July 17th. Details of what courses are being offered and at what times of the day can be found on the summer school application. Students will be accepted on a first come first served basis based on when applications are turned in with appropriate deposits. Courses will be “capped” at various numbers of students, depending on the course, so it is important to get your application in soon to reserve your spot. Courses which do not have enough applicants will not be run and students will be notified if they are closed out of a course or if a course is canceled due to lack of enrollment. Finally, spring sports are starting up this month as long as the weather cooperates, which hasn’t happened so far. However, soon enough there will be plenty of games, matches, and meets to watch. Please consider attending a baseball game, softball game, tennis match, or track meet to support our spring athletes. Have a great April, Michael Roberto PROM Prom will be held at the Bertram Inn & Conference Center, 600 N. Five years ago, Science Olympiad did not exist at Aurora High School. In the past 4 years, a small group of dedicated students have put Aurora High School on the map as a name to know in the Science Olympiad community. Last year the team qualified for the State Tournament, placing 6th at regional competition, and this year the team climbed to 2nd place. The team advances to the state competition on April 27th to be held at The Ohio State University. Science Olympiad students compete in 23 different events ranging from astronomy and anatomy to robot arms and rocks. The members of this year’s state team are: Moravec, Mitch Ritz, Michaela Winkler, Matt Kronz, Sarah Kuryshev, Michael O'Callaghan, Conor Sharafuddin, Ryan Grohe, Erin MacIntyre, Megan Boehm, Christina Le, Phuoc Hanh Jayakumar, Rohith Ovalle, Ryan If you are interested in supporting the Science Olympiad team in their pursuits, please contact Coach April Nenadal at anenadal@aurora-schools.org or 330.954.2282. Sophomores Visit National Exhibit at the Aurora Historical Society On Friday, March 22, the sophomore U.S. History students in Mrs. Schadle’s, Mr. Kukarola’s and Mr. Radtke’s classes walked over to the Aurora Historical Society to view the national exhibit called “Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War.” Students completed activities related to the major themes of the exhibit: secession, slavery and civil liberties in wartime. Artifacts presented by the National Constitution Center and the National Endowment for the Humanities included editorial cartoons, speeches, photographs and maps to help students understand this most trying time in our nation’s history. Serious questions like “Are we a single nation?” and “Must civil liberties give way in a time of war?” are highlighted in this exhibit. International Club The past two months have focused on the countries of Russia and Ireland. An amazing presentation on Russia was given by Tatyana Behringer and Anna Schostek. They went over festivals and customs in Russia and brought in artifacts and candies. Each candy had a Russian saying! Also presenting were Itay Pogrebinsky and his mother Klara. They talked to us about the Russian language and alphabet. Thanks you so much!! March featured Ireland and a special thanks goes to Ava Julia Valley (and her mom!) and Charlene Westfall. Ava and Charlene prepared a very informative Power Point on Ireland and Ava shared corned beef and cabbage, Irish cookies, oatmeal and drinks. Charlene brought in her traditional Irish dancing attire from Murphy's and performed a dance for us. Thanks to all for making International Club so fun! On Tuesday, April 23rd, the country of the month will be Bangladesh. In May we will hold officer elections for next year!
