The MMUF Travel & Research Grants are available to graduate students
who participated in the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship
(MMUF) Program. The grants provide eligible graduate students with the
financial means to complete their research prior to the start of dissertation
writing. Awards are based on the scholarly merit of individual
applications received.
Abstract:
The fundamental objective of MMUF is to increase the number of
minority students (particularly African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans
and Native Americans), and others with a demonstrated commitment to
eradicating racial disparities, who will pursue Ph.D.s in core fields in the
arts and sciences. The program aims to reduce over time the serious
underrepresentation on the faculties of individuals from certain minority
3
groups, as well as to address the attendant educational consequences of
these disparities.
The program serves the related goals of structuring campus environments
so that they will be more conducive to improved racial and ethnic
relations, and of providing role models for all youth.

Research Fellowship

University of Cambridge
Jesus College
Deadline:
September 11, 2010
Deadline Note:
Anticipated deadline. A deadline for the next cycle has not been
10
confirmed. The record will be updated when new program
information becomes available.
Amount Note:
The fellowship is a fixed-term three year Research Fellowship normally
commencing on October 1, 2010, though there may be grounds for a
different starting date as described in the further particulars posted
below. Remuneration for a Research Fellow is set by reference to the
Cambridge general stipend and salary scale. Steps 28 (£19,645 pay
award pending), 30 (£20,834 pay award pending) and 32 (£22,101 pay
award pending) are applied respectively over the three years of the
fellowship, which will incorporate a cap at the year 2 level of Step 30, if
a Ph.D. has not been awarded by the end of that second year. The
remuneration is subject to a deduction if the Fellow is resident in
college. A Research Fellow not resident in college receives a 'living-out'
allowance, currently of £1,456 per annum. Children's allowances are
payable, at present at the rate of £1,213 a year for each child in the
custody of and maintained by a Research Fellow, up to a maximum of
£3,639 a year for three or more such children. Free dinner (or lunch) and
(subject as above) free rooms, light and heat will be provided. A
candidate who holds another award may expect to receive a
supplementary payment from the college, provided this is allowed by the
award-giving body. The college is sometimes able to assist in the
provision of housing for those Research Fellows with spouses or
partners. Research Fellows may join the University's Superannuation
Scheme, and the college is prepared, where appropriate, to make a
contribution to university fees. A Research Fellow may be invited to
undertake a small amount of undergraduate teaching during term, but
will not be permitted to undertake other paid work or to hold other
offices and awards except by permission of the College Council.
Eligibility:
These fellowships are intended for researchers early in their careers.
Successful candidates are expected to be either graduate students,
probably in the latter stages of their research leading to a Ph.D. degree,
or postdoctoral researchers who have recently been awarded their Ph.D.
degree. Candidates who have undertaken more than four years of
research are unlikely to be considered.

Abstract:
The Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies was
established at the Freie Universität Berlin to promote a new generation
of young North American scholars with specialized knowledge of
modern and contemporary German and European affairs. The program
supports scholars in the social and political sciences and economics,
modern and contemporary historians, as well as Germanists interested
in similar questions.
Fellowships are awarded for doctoral dissertation research as well as
16
postdoctoral research leading to completion of a monograph.
The Berlin Program is a residential program offering a stimulating
academic environment that integrates research opportunities with
intellectual and cultural interaction. An essential part of the program is
the bi-weekly seminar, which brings together the North American
fellows and leading German scholars. Fellows have access to Berlin's
broader intellectual community and extensive libraries. Fellows work
closely with colleagues and senior scholars at all three major Berlin
universities, Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin,
and Technische Universitat, as well as many of the capital's advanced
study institutions, including Max Planck Institutes and the
Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin.
The Berlin Program is administered in partnership with the German
Studies Association (GSA) which supports the program's North
American promotion and transatlantic selection processes.

The International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) program
supports distinguished graduate students in the humanities and social
sciences conducting dissertation research outside the United States.
Abstract:
The IDRF program is committed to empirical and site-specific research
that advances knowledge about non-U.S. cultures and societies
(involving fieldwork, research in archival or manuscript collections, or
quantitative data collection). The program promotes research that is
situated in a specific discipline and geographical region and is engaged
with interdisciplinary and cross-regional perspectives.
The program will consider applications for dissertation research
grounded in a single site, informed by broader cross-regional and
18
interdisciplinary perspectives, as well as applications for multi-sited,
comparative, and transregional research. Proposals that identify the U.S.
as a case for comparative inquiry are welcome; however, proposals that
focus predominantly or exclusively on the United States are not eligible.
Proposals may cover all periods in history, but must address topics that
have relevance to contemporary issues and debates.

The NSF's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS),
Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), and Division of
Science Resources Statistics (SRS) award grants to doctoral students to
improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide funds
for items not normally available through the student's university.
Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake
significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in
settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible.
Proposals are judged on the basis of their scientific merit, including the
theoretical importance of the research question and the appropriateness
of the proposed data and methodology to be used in addressing the
question. In an effort to improve the quality of dissertation research,
many programs in BCS, SES, and the Research on Science and
Technology Surveys and Statistics Program within SRS accept doctoral
dissertation improvement grant proposals.
Abstract:
The following programs support dissertation research:
1. In BCS: Archaeology; Cultural Anthropology; Geography and Spatial
Sciences; Linguistics; Physical Anthropology; and Science of Science
and Innovation Policy
2. In SES: Decision, Risk, and Management Science; Economics; Law
and Social Science; Methodology, Measurement, and Statistics; Political
Science; Science of Science and Innovation Policy; Science, Technology,
and Society; and Sociology
3. In SRS: Research on Science and Technology Surveys and Statistics

deadline.
$27,000
Three fellows will be selected. Fellowship recipients must spend a minimum
of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months of continuous time resident in
Mongolia conducting their research projects under the fellowship program.
All research projects must begin between September 2009 and March 2010.
The 12-month term will allow recipients to stay in Mongolia for the academic
year, which runs from September to June, and the summer months, which
offer the best weather for field research. Fellowship awards will include travel
expenses to and from Mongolia, an accommodation and food allowance, and
a stipend to cover research expenses. Awards will be adjusted based on the
length of time spent conducting research in the region with a maximum award
of $27,000 per fellow.
22
Award recipients are responsible for paying all taxes related to their awards.
The fellowship funds awarded are generally considered income in the United
States, Canada, and/or Mongolia, and therefore must be reported to the tax
authorities. The ACMS bears no responsibility for withholding or remitting
taxes related to these awards.
Fellows are responsible for ensuring proper medical and evacuation insurance
coverage during their time in the field in Mongolia. Proof of insurance
coverage will be required before disbursement of fellowship funds.

All applicants must be current members of the ACMS to be considered for the
program. All applicants must be citizens of the United States or Canada, and
must be attending or recently graduated from a university in the United States
or Canada. All applicants for dissertation fellowships must be able to
demonstrate that they have completed required coursework for their programs
and will have an accepted dissertation proposal prior to the start of their
fellowship program. All postdoctoral fellows must have completed their
Ph.D. within seven years of the start of their fellowship program. Applicants
must provide evidence in their applications that these provisions will be met,
and evidence that all requirements have been met before the fellowship funds

Abstract:
The program annually supports fellows conducting doctoral dissertation or
postdoctoral research in Mongolia on topics in the social sciences or
humanities. Projects focused on topics in the natural sciences are not eligible
unless there are clear areas in which the research furthers social, cultural,
political, or policy knowledge relevant to Mongolia or the region. The
program seeks to promote research opportunities in Mongolia among scholars
who have not included the country in their previous research, and to broaden
the knowledge base of scholars already working in the country. Previous
Mongolian Studies experience is not required, but projects should enhance
knowledge of Mongolia and the Mongols within relevant academic
disciplines or fields of study. Projects that link research conducted in
Mongolia to research in other parts of Asia or across academic fields are
especially encouraged. Fellowship recipients must be based in Mongolia for
the duration of their fellowship, but research travel in the broader region is
23
encouraged.
Fellowship recipients will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of
programs and projects sponsored by the ACMS. Fellows will have the
opportunity to take intensive Mongolian language courses, select resources
for inclusion in the ACMS Library, and participate in an annual academic
seminar in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, hosted by the ACMS and supported by the
Henry Luce Foundation, that will bring together international, regional, and
local scholars and students. The fellowship recipients will help select the
theme for the seminar, and each will be asked to introduce and discuss their
research work at the seminar. Seminar participants will include international,
regional and local scholars and students. As part of their research work under
the fellowship, fellowship recipients will be asked to contribute to the
development of new electronic academic resources related to Mongolia being
developed by the ACMS, such as online bibliographies, links to information
sources, and information on research materials available in Mongolia.

The mandate of the MHRC is to promote the growth of and the
coordination of the health research enterprise in Manitoba. To this end,
the MHRC provides support for health related basic, clinical and applied
health research in the Province of Manitoba.
Abstract:
Graduate students in population health and health-related social sciences
often work on projects that are not directly related to their supervisor's
research program and, therefore, incur costs in conducting their
dissertation research. In recognition of this, and to encourage excellence
in dissertation research, the MHRC will fund a limited number of Ph.D.
Dissertation Awards. The grant may be used for a variety of purposes,
such as printing, travel, honoraria,

Amount Note:
An AAUW American Fellow is expected to pursue her project full time
during the funding period. No partial fellowships are awarded.
Fellowships may not be deferred. Fellows may work up to 10 hours a

from AAUW. The AAUW American Fellowships stipend must be larger
than any other single fellowship or grant (excluding sabbatical support)
received during the year and must be acknowledged as the major award.
Acceptance of any concurrent funds of a lesser amount than the AAUW
award requires prior written approval from AAUW. Dissertation Fellows
cannot hold concurrent dissertation writing fellowships or grants. Any
major changes in plans for the fellowship year must have the prior
written approval from AAUW. AAUW must be notified promptly of any
change in the status of an application resulting from acceptance of
another award. Stipend checks are made payable to fellows, not to
institutions. Fellows are responsible for reporting the fellowship as
income to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.
Dissertation Fellowships do fund (1) travel to professional meetings,
conferences, or seminars, as long as it does not exceed 10 percent of the
fellowship; and (2) most living and educational expenses. Dissertation
Fellowships do not fund research assistants, laboratory supplies and
equipment, publication costs, tuition for additional coursework,
repayment of loans or other personal obligations (fellowships are not
retroactive), and tuition for a dependent's education (fellowship funds
may, however, be used for dependent care).
Eligibility:
Applicants must be female U.S. citizens or permanent residents as of
November 15, 2009. Applicants must have completed all coursework,
passed all preliminary exams, and had the dissertation research proposal
or plan approved by November 15, 2009. Students already holding a
fellowship for the purpose of writing the dissertation the year before the
fellowship year are not eligible to apply. Applicants may apply up to two
times for a fellowship for the same dissertation project. The American
Fellowships are not open to former American Fellowship recipients.
Also, AAUW and AAUW boards, committees, panels, staff, and current
interns are not eligible to apply for fellowship and grant awards.

This program is designed to assist full-time graduate students at degreegranting institutions of higher education, whose dissertations are related
in substantial part to Canada, to undertake doctoral research about
Canada. The purpose is to increase knowledge and understanding of
Canada and to support the development of Canadian studies.
Abstract:
Awards may be granted for research in any of the following categories:
- Although ICCS welcome applications from all disciplines lending
themselves most readily to Canadian Studies research development, the
council are particularly interested in projects that have policy relevance
for Canada and Canada's foreign policy, which include democracy and
rule of law; economic development; environment; managing diversity;
North American Partnership; and peace and security.
- Comparative studies with substantial Canadian content (33 percent or
more).
- Aspects of Canada's bilateral relations with participating countries.
Purely scientific subjects such as physics, chemistry, medicine,
engineering, etc. which would not lead to a better knowledge and
understanding of Canada per se are not eligible, nor are proposals that
focus exclusively on technological or methodological issues.

Abstract:
The fellowships are designed to promote diversity on college faculties by
encouraging students from underrepresented groups to complete a
terminal graduate degree and to pursue careers in college teaching.
Fellows devote the bulk of the first year to the completion of dissertation
work - or in the case of MFA applicants, building their professional
portfolios - while also teaching one course as a faculty member in one of
the college's academic departments or programs. The second year of
residency (ideally with degree in hand) is spent on academic career
development while again teaching just one course.
Gaius Charles Bolin was the first black graduate of Williams. The
fellowship program was founded in 1985, on the centennial of his
admission to the College.
During the period of residence at Williams, the Bolin Fellows will be
affiliated with an appropriate department or program, and will be
expected to teach one one-semester course each year, normally in the fall
semester of year one and the spring semester of year two.

Abstract:
In order to encourage such scholars to consider college rather than
university teaching, the college offers this fellowship program. The
program is for scholars in the final stages of their doctoral work who
need only to finish the dissertation to complete requirements for the
Ph.D. It is hoped that the experience of living and working for a year at
Kenyon College will encourage these fellows to consider a liberal arts
college as a place to begin their careers as teachers and scholars. The
fellow is expected to write the dissertation and to teach one course each
semester, usually in the fellow's general research area. Fellows are also
expected to offer a college lecture or departmental seminar on the
dissertation topic at some point during the academic year in residence.
Kenyon College assumes that the fellow will participate in the
intellectual life of their home department, as well as in the broader
cultural life of the college. The primary expectation, however, and the
main focus of this fellowship, is the completion of the dissertation.

Title:
Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources
Sponsor:
Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR)
Deadline:
November 13, 2009
Upper
Amount:
$25,000
Amount Note:
The program offers about 15 competitively awarded fellowships a year.
64
Each provides a stipend of $2,000 per month for periods ranging from 9
to 12 months. Each fellow will receive an additional $1,000 upon
participating in a symposium on research in original sources and
submitting a report acceptable to CLIR on the research experience. Thus
the maximum award will be $25,000. Fellowships must begin between
June 1 and September 1, 2010, and end within 12 months of
commencing. Fellowships cannot be renewed or extended. Fellows are
expected to devote full time to their dissertation research without
holding teaching or research assistantships or undertaking other paid
work. Applicants may apply simultaneously for other fellowships,
including other Mellon awards, but fellows may not hold other
fellowships simultaneously with CLIR's. Fellows may use stipends to
meet living expenses, travel costs, and other expenses that enable
dissertation research to be carried out, but not to defray tuition. Fellows
will make their own arrangements for lodging at and transportation to
the repository or repositories in which they need to work. CLIR cannot
provide assistance in obtaining visas.
Eligibility:
To be eligible, an applicant will (1) be enrolled in a doctoral program in
a graduate school in the United States (master's thesis research is not
eligible); (2) complete all doctoral requirements except the dissertation
and be ready to start research for it as early as June 1 and no later than
September 1, 2010, with approval of the dissertation proposal no later
than April 1, 2010; (3) plan to do dissertation research primarily in
original source material in the holdings of archives, libraries, historical
societies, museums, related repositories, or a combination; and (4) write
the dissertation and receive the Ph.D. degree in a field of the humanities
or in a related element of the social sciences (candidates for the Ed.D,
J.D., or D.D. degrees are not eligible). An applicant may be of any
nationality but must be enrolled in a U.S. graduate school and be
studying in the USA, not on a campus abroad even if operated by a U.S.
institution. Those who are conducting original source research using
online sources in novel or innovative ways are eligible to apply for this
fellowship. Preference is given to applicants who will be studying away
from their home institution.
Because part of the purpose of the fellowships is to help junior scholars
gain experience with primary sources and with the institutions that
provide access to them, and to help institutions gain understanding of the
needs of junior scholars in the humanities, successful applicants will
agree to three special provisions of the fellowship opportunity.
1. First, prior to the fellowship period, all fellows are required to
participate in an introductory workshop about using original sources and
the institutions that hold them. The workshop is held in mid-May at the
Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The fellowship program will
65
cover all costs associated with fellows' attendance at the introductory
workshop.
2. Second, within one month of the end of the fellowship period, each
fellow will send to CLIR an acceptable written analysis of the fellowship
experience, covering such questions as these:
a. What aspects of the repository were most helpful to the fellow in
accomplishing research, and what obstacles or complications most
hindered it?
b. What additional measures might facilitate original source research in
the fellow's field?
c. How could graduate study best prepare scholars for such research?
d. How could libraries and archives best make decisions about materials
to acquire, preserve, publicize, and even digitize for meeting scholars'
needs?
3. Third, when fellows complete their fellowship periods, they will
participate in a one-day symposium about their experiences. The
symposium is held in mid-October at the Library of Congress in
Washington, DC. From such feedback, CLIR hopes to help archives and
libraries increase their understanding of the needs of today's new
scholars. The fellowship program will cover all costs associated with
fellows' attendance at the post-fellowship symposium.

Abstract:
CLIR is pleased to offer fellowships funded by the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation for doctoral dissertation research in the humanities in
original sources. Proposed research may be conducted at a single or
multiple sites abroad, in the USA, or both. Any relevant repository may
be used, including government archives and private collections
accessible to the applicant. The purposes of this fellowship program are
to
- help junior scholars in the humanities and related social-science fields
gain skill and creativity in developing knowledge from original sources;
- enable dissertation writers to do research wherever relevant sources
may be, rather than just where financial support is available;
- encourage more extensive and innovative uses of original sources in
libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and related repositories
in the United States and abroad; and
- provide insight from the viewpoint of doctoral candidates into how
66
scholarly resources can be developed for access most helpfully in the
future.
Original source material means primary sources such as the following:
1. Records, documents, manuscripts, and other written material
2. Photographs, films, sound recordings, oral histories, and other
audiovisual material
3. Maps, blueprints, drawings, and other graphic material
4. Library special collections, including books used as primary, not
secondary, sources
5. Original artwork, artifacts, and museum objects
6. Born-digital sources such as websites, wikis, and blogs
For purposes of this program, eligible fields of the humanities and
related elements of the social sciences will include
- area studies;
- art history;
- classics;
- comparative literature;
- critical theory;
- cultural anthropology;
- cultural studies;
- economic history;
- ethnic studies;
- ethnomusicology;
- history;
- history and philosophy of mathematics;
- history and philosophy of science and medicine;
- language and cultural linguistics;
- literature in any language;
- music history;
- philosophy;
- political theory;
- religion (exclusive of theological training for the ministry) ;
- rhetoric;
- women's studies; and
- interdisciplinary studies involving fields above.
The fellowship is not meant to support the creation of primary source
material, such as oral histories.

Awards for Study in Scandinavia
Sponsor:
American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF)
Deadline:
November 2, 2009
Deadline Note:
The deadline is for receipt of fully documented applications and a $20
nonrefundable application fee.
Amount:
$5,000
Upper
Amount:
$23,000
Amount Note:
The number of awards varies each year according to total funds
available. Over $300,000 is available for the 2009-10 competition.
Projects should be planned to fall within the summer 2009-summer 2010
period. Fellowships are up to $23,000 and are intended to support a yearlong stay. Grants are normally $5,000 for visits of one to three months
duration. The awards support project-related costs, including
maintenance, trans- Atlantic round-trip travel, in-country travel, tuition
and fees (where applicable) and materials expenditures (e.g., books,
photocopying, art supplies). ASF awards may require supplementation
from other sources, but they should not duplicate the benefits of
additional awards (and vice versa). Candidates must notify the ASF if
they have received other award offers. The ASF will not provide funds
if, in its judgment, a proposal can be carried out without its assistance.
Applicants must have a well-defined research or study project that makes
a stay in Scandinavia essential. Applicants must be United States citizens
or permanent residents. Applicants must have completed their
undergraduate education by the start of their project in Scandinavia.
Team projects are eligible, but each member must apply as an individual,
submitting a separate, fully documented application. First priority will be
given to applicants who have not previously received an ASF award.
Only in exceptional cases will a third award be considered.
Eligibility:
Grants are considered especially suitable for postgraduate scholars,
professionals, and candidates in the arts to carry out research or study
visits.
Priority for fellowships is given to candidates at the graduate level for
dissertation-related study or research.
The ASF considers it desirable that all candidates have at least some
ability in the language of the host country, even if it is not essential for
83
the execution of the research plan. For projects that require a command
of one or more Scandinavian (or other) languages, candidates should
defer application until they have the necessary proficiency.

The fellowship, established in 1999, honors the life and academic
achievements of one of the the University of Notre Dame's most
distinguished and beloved professors, Dr. Erskine A. Peters (19481998). Dr. Peters taught English at the university and also became
legendary for his commitment to scholarship, community service, and
graduate education in the College of Arts and Letters.
Abstract:
In keeping with the values that Dr. Peters held dear, two overall goals
exist: (1) to enable two outstanding African-American doctoral
candidates (at the ABD level) to devote their full energies to the
completion of the dissertation; and (2) to provide an opportunity for
African American scholars at the beginning of their academic careers to
experience life at a major Catholic research university. Fellows are
expected to be in residence at the university and to devote most of their
time to the completion of the dissertation. In addition, fellows
participate in a public forum discussing a variety of aspects related to
85
African American and African Diasporan life, culture, and traditions.
Many fellows make guest lecture appearances in courses related to their
disciplines and participate in short-term mutual learning event for
faculty and students (e.g., brown bag series, roundtable discussion,
etc.). The program is administered by both the Office of the Provost and
the Department of Africana Studies at the University.
