Consult with your mentor teacher regarding established dress code of your placement school. If there is a stated dress code policy which allows teachers to dress casually on a given day or due to a scheduled event (i.e. pep rally), preservice teachers may follow that policy. You will have the option to purchase an official GSU name tag to use during field placement. Watch for an email. Your clothing provides others insight to your professionalism and care in personal presentation: neat, clean and comfortable clothing and grooming is required. Program of Study • • Be proactive in planning your studies! • Professional Advising Week: held just prior to registration twice a year, provides meeting time with advisors to plan your course of study • Advising Worksheets and other details: Maximum course load during student teaching – 12 hours for graduate students, 15 hours for undergraduate students • Working during field placements is strongly discouraged and not allowed at all during student teaching. • Study abroad options must be approved by program advisor and director at least one semester before travel Contact your Program Coordinator early and as needed throughout your program to review your plan to ensure that you are on track for program completion. Important! In order to receive your induction certificate before August 2016, all certification requirements (including completion of EPY 7080 and EXC 4020 for graduate students) must be completed by the end of Spring semester 2016. Code of Ethics • All teacher candidates are expected to know and comply with Ethical Standards and the Code of Ethics Rules from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. • Two GACE Ethics Assessments (entry/exit) • GSU Student Code of Conduct Preservice Certificate (does not apply to Provisional Teachers) • You MUST obtain a Preservice Certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Submit your materials via GSU Office of Academic Assistance ASAP • We strongly recommend you obtain TORT Liability • You CANNOT begin your field placement work without a pre-service certificate. Field Placements • Placement assignments will be sent to your GSU email prior to fall start dates • Questions should be directed to your program coordinator and Shaleen Tibbs (stibbs@gsu.edu) • Do not contact the school administrators or teachers to arrange your own placement. • Hours for Practicum Field Placement: • BSE and BS Physics = 16 hrs per week • MAT = 20 hrs per week • Field Placements, continued… Follow your placement’s school system calendar for all holidays (including spring break) • You cannot be placed in a school where you have relatives working or attending (including your children). • Maximum course load during student teaching – 12 hours for graduate students, 15 hours for undergraduate students. Working during field placements is strongly discouraged and not allowed at all during student teaching. • Study abroad options must be approved by program advisor and director at least one semester before travel. edTPA Teaching Performance Assessment Task 1 - Planning for Instruction Task 2 - Instructing and Engaging Students Task 3 - Assessing Student Progress Signature learning experiences and assignments for the edTPA will be embedded in your methods and field-based courses Teacher candidates complete edTPA during student teaching Must pass edTPA for certification Professional Behavior and Dispositions • 20% of grade for Practicum I and Student Teaching • Must earn 80% or higher to pass course • Items that may cause you to lose points towards your dispositions score include the following: • Any action that violates the GaPSC Professional Code of Ethics • Turning in assignments that are carelessly created, late or plagiarized • Arriving late or failing to attend GSU mandatory sessions or school placement site • Being disrespectful to GSU administration/staff/faculty/university supervisor/mentor teacher/school administration • Any request to remove you from your assigned school site by the county administration due to your inappropriate actions. • Dressing inappropriately for an educational setting Particularly egregious behavior may result in dismissal from the course and a grade of F. Repeated violations will result in dismissal from the program. Disciplinary Review • Removal of disciplinary review restriction by GSU does not guarantee placement for practicum or student teaching. • Partner schools and school systems reserve the right to refuse placements for any teacher candidate they consider to be unacceptable for any reason. • GaPSC reserves the right to refuse to grant certification even though a teacher candidate may have completed the approved program. The GACE Content Examinations • GACE content examinations are required for certification. • • • You must TAKE the GACE content exam(s) prior to program completion. You must PASS the exam(s) prior to certification. A passing score for any GACE content assessment can fall into one of two categories: • • 220–249 — passing at the induction level 250 — passing at the professional level • If you take a combined test and pass one subtest at the induction level and the other at the professional level, the entire assessment will only be considered passed at the induction level. You must retake the subtest that was passed at the induction level if you wish to attempt to get a higher score and pass the entire assessment at the professional level. • After initial certification, additional fields may be added by passing the GACE in the new fields. Program Exit Portfolio • An organized representation of your professional accomplishments and proficiencies • Portfolios are organized by each individual program (i.e. 6-12 Social Studies, Middle Level Math/Science, etc.) • Portfolio is submitted through LiveText. Graduation • The Office of Academic Assistance (OAA) conducts a program audit during the semester for which you apply to graduate • If OAA determines that you are missing one or more courses, you will not have time to add those courses during your final semester. Therefore, you should ask your program advisor for a program audit at least one full semester before you plan to graduate • Ultimately, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure that all requirements for graduation (and certification) are met • Apply to graduate TWO semesters prior to your intended graduation term Certificate Levels Certification is conferred by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (not by GSU) 1. Preservice Certificate: • • • • Enrolled in ITP program Criminal background check Take Georgia Ethics Assessment Provide Verification of Lawful Presence 2. Induction certificate at T-4 (Bachelor’s) or T-5 (Master’s): • • • • • • • Complete certification program Pass Ethics Assessment Pass program exit portfolio Pass edTPA Pass GACE content exams Must be hired to teach in a public school in Georgia Expires in 3 years – next level Professional Certificate Professional Certification 3. Professional: • Both types of Professional certificate require at least 3 years of experience within the last 5 years and a Professional level passing score on the GACE content exam. • Performance-Based Professional certificates are for those teachers who have been evaluated for at least two years on the statewide Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES) and for leaders who have completed a Georgia performance-based certification program. Certification • Induction: This tier is intended for teachers with fewer than 3 years of experience within the last 5 years. The pathways are designed to address the needs of those completing a traditional educator preparation program in Georgia, those completing an educator preparation program in another state, early career educators who are certified in another state, and those who have begun teaching before completing an educator preparation program. The Induction certificate replaces the formerly used NonRenewable Non-Professional and GaTAPP certificates. • Professional: The new Professional certificates are either PerformanceBased or Standard. Both types of Professional certificate require at least 3 years of experience within the last 5 years and a Professional level passing score on the GACE content exam. Performance-Based Professional certificates are for those teachers who have been evaluated for at least two years on the statewide Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES) and for leaders who have completed a Georgia performance-based certification program.
