BTEC L3 Certificate in Creative Media Production (Film & TV) Assignment Brief: Music video Production Task 3: Music Video Production Unit 1: Pre-production Techniques for the Creative Media Production. Unit 29: Music Video production. Task 1 Launch Date: 18/11/2013 (week 10) Task 1 Deadline: 20/12/2013 (week 15) Final Unit Deadline: 06/01/2014 (week 15) Guided learning hours (for unit) Private Study Hours (for unit) Weeks (whole unit) 60 60 15 Introduction to the brief In this unit learners will explore existing music videos in order to understand the purpose and conventions and techniques used. You will research and write a report and present a PowerPoint on music video production. Improvements to your presentation will culminate in a report that will be recorded on video. Your presentations will include a proposal for your own music video production. You will display an awareness of the importance of planning and preparation to your work and then conduct detailed pre-production for your own idea following industry standard procedures. The development of an idea in the pre-production stages is crucial to the success of the project and you will be required to produce detailed storyboards and documentation showing evidence of planning. Ultimately you will shoot and edit the music video with the aim of displaying the extent of your creativity. Your work may be selected for inclusion in the Arts Academy Exhibition at Worthing museum in January 2013 Production Context You have been approached by a record company to produce a music video which will serve the purpose of promoting the artist. Ideally they are looking for someone who will be able to make creative videos for local artists with only a modest budget. As such you should try to find local musicians who would benefit from your skills. If this is not possible you can use an existing soundtrack and make a video that demonstrates your ability and placed on your show reel. There are lots of outlets for music videos with the increasing number of digital channels. Many directors of feature films started by making music videos and as such they are an excellent way of developing your skills and showing your talent. Activity 1: Shoot Completion: 02/12/2013 (week12). Covers: Unit 1: PMD 3, Unit 29: PMD4 You will by now have completed all of your planning. You simply need to put into action all of your intentions: Keep a production log or diary of each activity/production day completed. You may wish to use a blog. Ensure that all crew and cast members are informed of production days, details and responsibilities. Ensure that you borrow and return equipment in a responsible manner to avoid disruption to your own and other peoples’ productions. Look after your video footage carefully: write on tapes and cases, capture footage onto computers as soon as possible and avoid storing tapes in cars or other places where environmental damage may occur. It is advised that you have a crew member keep a tape log as you complete shooting. Activity 2: Edit and Present Completion: 20/12/2013 (week 15). Covers: Unit 1 PMD3. Unit 29 MD4 As you progress with shooting, you may wish to start creating an assemble edit (putting all of the footage in a rough order) Once you have completed shooting you will need to complete tape logging (if you did not do so during production) and video capture. With reference to teacher and peer feedback (at work in progress screenings), complete the final edit of your work. Continue to keep a production log until your teacher ‘signs off’ your final edit. You may have your work shown in the Worthing Museum in January 2013 as part of the Worthing college Arts Academy show. To achieve a Pass grade for Unit 1: P3, learners will apply their planning in such a way that it enables the completion of the product. To achieve a Merit grade for Unit 1: M3, learners will demonstrate that they can undertake pre-production work that enables the efficient completion of the product. To achieve a Distinction grade for Unit 1: D3, learners will be able to apply their pre-production planning to the proposed production to a standard that approaches professional practice, for example, ensuring that all the resources are in the right place at the right time. To achieve a Pass grade for Unit 29: P4: learners will have completed a music video. To achieve a Merit grade for Unit 29: M4: learners will show some facility and confidence in relation to skills, the handling of equipment and the application of techniques. The final product will be free of simple technical errors. There will be some imaginative thought behind the work so that technical skills and codes and conventions will be employed with some inventiveness. To achieve a Distinction grade for Unit 29: D4: Learners will apply their technical skills not just with imagination but with ingenuity and even elegance, and codes and conventions will be used with occasionally surprising results. Technical and production skills will be approaching professional standards. Learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. The term ‘working independently’ means that they are able to work on their own initiative, do not need constant support or supervision, give the work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others in production, and meet deadlines. In other words, they have the kind of self-management skills that would be expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.
