POSITION SUMMARY This position, under general supervision, performs Steamfitter/controls specialist work at the Journey Worker level. The person in the position must have the knowledge of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems operation and maintenance. Service and install and repair motors, valves and various control system devices, including direct digital control systems. Perform basic service on commercial and industrial heating, cooling and process systems components. Repair hot water tanks, autoclaves, sterilizers and other steam equipment. Must have the knowledge to maintain and repair steam lines, valves, dampers, and other pneumatically controlled equipment. Must have knowledge of various codes, i.e., plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, welding, structural, HAZMAT, and OSHA. Have a basic understanding of physics, and Refrigerant Recovery Certification (EPA) a plus. Must have a working knowledge to align and assemble parts, set boilers, chillers and other various components. He/she has the responsibility to diagnose problems, conduct repairs, perform preventive maintenance, and complete component installation and commissioning of HVAC controls and systems within our Metasys DDC campus building automation system. A high level of complete technical competence with web based Metasys DDC control systems is important. The person in this position must also read blueprints and specification, interpret schematic drawings and diagrams. Have knowledge of and perform basic math computations. Identify various materials and components, and make templates for welding. Must have knowledge of different materials for joining various types of pipes. Knowledge of properties of various mediums used in mechanical system; solder, braze and weld various types of metal and plastic pipes. Install rod hangers, clean and prepare pipe weld joints. This position also installs new systems in accordance with plans and specifications. Performs all duties in a professional manner, with an emphasis on customer service and serving as a model representative of the Department of Facility Services, and the Division of Finance and Administrative Affairs, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. 15. Perform any steamfitter control related tasks as assigned. A7. Remove existing HVAC equipment which is being replaced or no longer needed. A8. Install HVAC equipment including piping, air handlers, pumps, valves, and specialties. A9. Make piping connections to heating, ventilating, air conditioning, laboratory, and other fixed and movable equipment. A10. Repair all phases of the distribution system of chilled water, high and low pressure steam, steam condensate, and high pressure air. A11. Repair valves, dampers, and other pneumatically and DDC controlled equipment. 39% B. Service and maintenance of HVAC controls on building automation systems B1. Troubleshoot and properly diagnose mechanical refrigeration systems. B2. Effects preventive maintenance to control systems, as directed. B3. Reports problems or changes to management immediately. B4. Thorough knowledge in the diagnosis and repair of digital controls and digital systems. Thorough knowledge and skill in the use of the tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices of the Steamfitting trade. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the Steamfitting trade. Thorough knowledge of HVAC control systems. Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. and to work on feet, or with arms overhead, for extended periods of time. Ability to climb and work on ladders and scaffolding. Ability to work in small confined spaces. Visual acuity, ability to read, interpret and work from plans, involved drawings and sketches. Manual dexterity to manipulate small parts. Recognition as a Journey Worker Controls/Steamfitter by an appropriate authority or vocational school four year program graduate, or an Associate’s degree in electronics, mechanical systems, computer technology, air conditioning or similar field. Degree may be offset by two years experience in servicing electronic and/or mechanical systems. Five to seven years of increasingly responsible experience in servicing electronic control and HVAC equipment. Possession of a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License in good standing, in order to drive Stateowned vehicles for the transport of materials and staff. Thorough knowledge of Metasys DDC control system.
