If you agree that your job as a department chair is to help your young faculty, students, and postdocs succeed, read on. The American Association of Anatomists (AAA) gives your anatomy graduate students, postdocs, & young faculty the special edge they need to jumpstart their careers. Here’s how AAA can benefit you and your department: ► FINANCIAL SUPPORT AVAILABLE. AAA’s Postdoctoral Fellows Program provides $20,000 salary support for members working in any aspect of biology relevant to the anatomical sciences. Grad students, postdocs & junior faculty can apply for a $5,000 Lippincott Williams Wilkins/AAA Education Research Scholarship, and all members are eligible for our new $1,000 Short-term Visiting Scholarships. ► GRANTS AND AWARDS. Your bottom line will be brighter and lighter, thanks to AAA’s travel and meeting support. Students & postdocs receive up to $350 just for giving a poster or platform presentation at the AAA Annual Meeting. Junior faculty can compete for a $500 travel award. They all can compete for the $500 Young Anatomist Publications Award. And all AAA members are eligible for AAA’s Outreach Grants—up to $3,000 to fund a research meeting or educational program. ► LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. A key aspect to promotion and tenure is service to the profession. AAA offers students, postdocs, & junior faculty a unique chance to shine on committees and even on the Board of Directors. ► IN-PERSON NETWORKING. The AAA Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology (April 9-13 in Washington, DC) is the ideal setting to meet new mentors, cultivate contacts, and test presentation skills in a forum that’s formal, yet small enough to foster friendly interaction and constructive feedback. ► A CHANCE TO BE NOTICED. Students & postdocs can compete for poster and platform awards, present their work at AAA’s Student/ Postdoc Poster Session & Reception and receive individual feedback on their Annual Meeting presentations.
