Library Workshop for EPA3083 5 Sep 2013 1 Outline • Find Library resources for research iSearch ProQuest Education Databases • RefWorks – a web-based bibliographic management tool Create an account Import references Create reference list in preferred style • Q&A 2 What is iSearch? • Stands for “intelligent search” • A brand new search and discovery tool which enables you to search Library Catalogue and most of the Library’s ejournals, e-books and databases. • You can find all relevant information on any particular topic with one simple search. 3 Where to start? - access iSearch from the HKIEd Library Website http://www.lib.ied.edu.hk Enter the keywords, article title, author or name of the book and start searching 4 4 e.g. Search for gender gap higher education gets over 1 hundred thousand hits with books, journals, reports, etc. 5 5 For more precise results, use double quotes for phrases “gender gap” and “higher education” 6 6 Sample result of an online e-book (Click the link under Online Access to read the e-book) 7 7 Sample result of an article with full text (Click the icon of PDF Full Text to view the article) 8 8 Click Check EdLINK to see whether full text is available in case no PDF Full Text icon is provided 9 9 Example: Retrieve full text article via EdLINK 10 10 Quick Options to narrow down the results to scholarly journals / Library Catalogue, limit results to particular year(s), source types, subject, language, etc. 11 11 - Check with the location code / request the item / search the HKALL, etc. Check with similar title(s) 12 Add selected items to Folder for printing, email, export, etc 13 You can also export records to RefWorks for future use if you have registered a RefWorks account 14 Expand your search to other Chinese Databases, HKALL, Google Scholar, etc 15 15 Click “Retrieve Item” to view the article 16 Click A-Z Database List to search Chinese databases and other specialized databases not covered by iSearch 17 17 ProQuest Education Databases This provides simultaneous searching on: • Australian Education Index • British Education Index • CBCA Education • ERIC • Physical Education Index • ProQuest Dissertations & Theses A&I • ProQuest Education Journals • ProQuest Research Library 18 ProQuest Education Databases Find “ProQuest Education Databaese” by Browsing “P" (or browse by “education” subject; or search directly) 19 20 20 E.g. You can also browse the tips for more successful searching. 24 24 Searching tips: ProQuest Help 25 Searching tips: Expand your search Select other links of “Suggested subjects” to expand your search Use Boolean operator “OR” to include more search terms e.g. web-based OR internet OR electronic OR digital Use truncation (*) to expand your search term in alternative way e.g. adolescen* to search for adolescent, adolescence, etc. 26 Searching tips: Narrow your search Select “Peer reviewed” under the search box Consider the suggested “Narrow results” options from the search result screen, e.g. publication title, document type, language, publication date, etc. Use Boolean operator “AND” to limit search results to a narrower scene e.g. school support AND inclusive education 27 RefWorks Your personal reference database @Internet 28 About RefWorks • Web-based Bibliographic Management Tool • Create your own reference databases • Import references from library catalogues & databases • Manage & organize your references in folders • Search your references • Adding your own keywords & comments • Can be integrated with MS-Word to create in-text citations & reference list in preferred style • Accessible by computers connected to Internet 29 29 Create your RefWorks account 30 Create/Access your RefWorks account • Click the RefWorks link at library web site 31 RefWorks Login Useful Help for RefWorks 32 Remote Access 1. 2. 3. Sign up / Login 1 2 34 Sign up a new RefWorks account 35 The menu bar allows you to access all functionalities of RefWorks.
