Career News: Marilyn Scott – August 9, 2013
VTAC guides have been distributed to Year 12 students and transition sessions are underway. These
sessions are vital for Year 12 students to receive information from a variety of sources – hand outs, options,
presentations and guest speakers regarding smooth pathways into further education, apprenticeship
options or employment. Students should be researching their options and be ready to complete their
applications through VTAC which opened on August 5 and closes on September 27, 2013. The process
involves registration, course application and payment. Payment options are by credit card or Pay Pal. The
VTAC website is: www.vtac.edu.au
The next session is on Wednesday 21 August during P4 in the theatre. Our guest speaker will be ACU.
All year levels at the moment want appointments and my diary is looking very full. Students are requested
to have done some research into subjects, careers and pathways option prior to making an appointment
with me. 
 SEAS applications opened on Monday August 5 and close 5.00pm Tuesday October 8, 2013.
GOLDEN RULES for course application.
 Always register with exactly the same information that is provided when enrolling.
 Always list the courses in the order of preference at the university you have researched.
 Consider the selection data from last year, but use it as a guide only….it may change.
 Research courses at a variety of places and prepare a plan B.

Always check extra requirements of courses and the dates they are due.

EXAM PREPARATION & STUDY REVISION: NEAP flyers are available in the careers room. This company offer
revision and study lectures at Melbourne University for senior students. Take a flyer and decide if the
information would assist you. www.neap.com.au

Year 9 and 10 students are expected to research the many options open to them. Consider completing a
VETiS subject in areas such as LOTE Japanese (at Loreto), Community Services, Aviation, Pathway to Nursing
and many more. Please check the Highlands Llen website for more VETiS information and for application
details. http://highlandsllen.org/schools-vetis.php
It is important to select subjects that are enjoyed and that the student is good at. However, some subjects
such as Math and LOTE provide challenges and pathways that are worth the extra hard work and effort .
Open Days are a great way to source extra information which may help when planning for your future.
Please plan your visits and collect a question sheet (in careers room) to assist you in gaining as much
information as possible. Year 10 and 11 should visit at least one OPEN DAY this year.
Remember to look at the residential accommodation available while at Open Day.
Whitley College has planned its activities on Open Day to help make the trip to Melbourne a little easier for
rural families. Parking at the University of Melbourne on Open Day can be difficult, so we suggest that
visitors park in one the many free spaces around Whitley College and then walk to the University campus.
Open Day at the University campus runs from 10am – 4pm, but Whitley College will open earlier from
8.30am and will be serving free hot breakfast, as well as food and fresh coffee all day, so there will be a
warm welcome whatever time you arrive. All of the residential colleges at Melbourne University will be
open on August 18, many from 9.00am—5.00pm. A shuttle bus will run from campus to Whitley College and
International House to give tired feet a rest as well.
The Careers Room currently has some great resources available to all students. Most of the 2014 University,
TAFE and Private Provider information is now available. We have received information brochures from The
School for Excellence for VCE students interested in attending master classes. We also have an Open Day
board and a Scholarship board for students to access this information a little easier.
