IEEE and its members inspire a global community through IEEE's highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities. Summary of the IEEE Organization Members Board of Directors Assembly IEEEUSA EAB PSPB MGA Executive Director Standards TAB Staff Committees IEEE has: • • • • • more than 395,000 members in more than 160 countries 45 % are from outside the United States more than 90,000 student members 331 sections in ten geographic regions worldwide 1,952 chapters that unite local members with similar technical interests • 1,855 student branches in 80 countries • 483 student branch chapters at colleges and universities • 338 affinity groups - IEEE Affinity Groups are nontechnical sub-units of one or more Sections or a Council. The Affinity Group patent entities are the IEEE-USA Consultants' Network, Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD), Women in Engineering (WIE) and Life Members (LM) *Data current as of 31 Dec 2009 IEEE has: • has 38 societies and 7 technical councils representing the wide range of technical interests • has more than 2.5 million documents in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library with more than 7 million downloads each month • has 1,300 standards and projects under development • publishes 148 transactions, journals and magazines • sponsors over 1,100 conferences in 73 countries IEEE Regions IEEE-USA • Composed of Regions 1-6 • IEEE-USA's mission as outlined in the IEEE Bylaws is to recommend policies and implement programs specifically intended to serve and benefit the members, the profession, and the public in the United States in appropriate professional areas of economic, ethical, legislative, social and technology policy concern. • Our vision is to serve the IEEE U.S. member by being the technical professional's best resource for achieving life long career vitality and by providing an effective voice on policies that promote U.S. prosperity. Member & Geographic Activities • Grew out of Regional Activities Board • Serves members by maintaining, enhancing, and supporting the geographic organizational units of IEEE. • Responsible for IEEE membership and member development • Membership includes recruitment, development, administration of admissions, retention, elevation, and service, as well as related operational and budget issues Geographic Unit Relationships • Regions oversee Sections • Sections oversee Subsections, Chapters and Affinity Groups • Councils are comprised of Sections, and exist at the pleasure of the member Sections • Some Councils (but not all) have Chapters and Affinity Groups, and therefore oversee them Geographic Unit Relationships • Affinity Group Parents also oversee Affinity Groups (WIE, Consultants’ Networks, GOLD) • Student Branches oversee Student Branch Chapters (Region has Student Branch support) • IEEE-USA represents members in Washington, DC. Membership is automatic. IEEE Member and Geographic Activities • provide unique opportunities to attend technical presentations, create strong peer-to-peer connections, and participate in leadership opportunities that can make a positive distinction in IEEE members' jobs and careers. • Activities take place on a local level through the development and maintenance of Geographical Organizational Units: Regions, Sections, Technical Chapters, Affinity Groups, and Student Branches. • Member and Geographic Activities are volunteer-driven by members and the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board (MGA Board). Technical Activities Board • The TAB Mission Statement is to foster technological innovation and progress by advancing the technical activities of the IEEE for the benefit of the profession and humanity worldwide, and to represent the interests of Societies and Technical Councils within the IEEE. • The Technical Activities Board stimulates, promotes, facilitates and supports a global volunteer organization of innovative and agile technical communities. Uses the best technologies to attract, access, and disseminate technical information. • Provides the first place people go for the highest quality technical information in the areas of interest to the IEEE, acceleration and nurturing of innovation and the technical professional's lifelong network of choice. Technical Unit Relationships • IEEE has 38 technical societies that provide benefits to members within specialized fields of interest • Societies are worldwide • TAB (Technical Activities Board) oversees Societies • Chapters are local groups – Organized around society interests – Funding flows through section and/or society – Reporting flows through section Educational Activities Board • Recommends policies on educational matters and • Implements programs specifically intended to serve the educational pursuits of IEEE members, the engineering and scientific communities, and the general public • Handles accreditation Publication Services & Products Board • Formulates and recommends informationrelated, published services and products policies • Establishes and maintains standards and procedures for IEEE information dissemination • Recommends policies and best practices as they relate to the IEEE website Section Officer Training, Responsibilities & Resources Quick Start Section Officer Training http://www.ieee.org/societies_communities/geo_activities/officer_training/quick_start.html I’m A Section Chair, I . . . • Know all about: Bylaws; Policies & Procedures; RAB Operations Manual • Chair meetings • Work with ExCom, Committee, Chapter and Affinity Group Chairs to support activities • Represent Section @ Region meetings • Am a signer on bank account I’m a Section Vice Chair, I . . . • Chair meetings in absence of Chair • Am familiar with the policies relating to the activity of the Section and subunits, including bylaws, policy & procedures, RAB Operations Manual • Assume additional authority or activity as designated by Chair I’m a Section Treasurer, I . . . • • • • Prepare the annual budget Record all financial activity Reconcile bank statements/activity Report status of unit’s finances to the Section ExCom on a regular basis • Prepare and submit Annual Financial Report (L50) • Signer on bank account I’m A Section Secretary, I . . . • Record minutes of ExCom and other Section meetings • Handle all correspondence • Distribute meeting notices • Maintain Section records • Submit officer and meeting reporting, including officer changes during the year, to IEEE Operations Center I’m a Chapter Chair, I . . . • Preside at Chapter ExCom and other mtgs.. • Work with other Chapter officers to determine program of activities for Chapter • Represent Chapter at Section ExCom mtgs.. and Society-sponsored mtgs.. • Familiar with Section bylaws, policies & procedures, RAB Operations Manual, and any Society requirements for activity • Submit or insure submission of required reporting to Section Administrative and operational resources Becoming an IEEE Fellow Concentration Banking Contract Management Corporate Compliance and Tax Management Grant Administration Volunteer Global Travel Accident / Medical Plan Membership Development Standards Development Presentation Library •Geographic Unit Operations •Volunteer Training •IEEE at a Glance •IEEE Strategy Activities •IEEE New Initiative Program •IEEE Annual Election •IEEE Financials & Statistics •Contact Staff & Volunteers (Organizational Rosters) •Help - IEEE Contact Center •IEEE Acronyms (PDF, 17 KB) Services available to volunteers e-Notice Electronic Newsletter Distribution Service Electronic Mail and Listserv Services Entity Web Hosting (EWH) Service IEEE Web Conferencing Meeting and Conference Management SAMieee (Section Access to Membership Information) Strategic Research Teleconferencing Travel Services vTools (Electronic Tools for Volunteers) Does your unit have a . . . • • • • • • Professional Activities Chair Student Activities Chair Awards & Recognition Chair Membership Development Chair Historian Web master
