Projected to increase to 109 minutes in the next 25 years. • • Costs $6 billion in travel costs and lost productivity every year. By 2031, this number could increase to $15 billion. 4 • Over 500,000 tonnes of annual GHG emissions is due to traffic congestion. Who is Metrolinx? Metrolinx was created in 2006 by the Province of Ontario as the first Regional Transportation Agency for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Shareholder: Ministry of Transportation (Provincial Government Ministry) Governance: overseen by a 13-member board of directors that provides strategic direction and oversight for Metrolinx’s activities and operations. Appointments are made by the Government of Ontario. Mission: Champion, develop and implement an integrated transportation system for our region that enhances prosperity, sustainability and quality of life. Mandate: Develop the first regional plan for transit and transportation. 5 Our Regional Transportation Plan A 25-year integrated transportation plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. It’s about building thriving communities, a sustainable environment and a prosperous, competitive economy. • Triple the length of rapid transit • Put 81% of population within 2km of rapid transit • Reduce commute times to an average of 77 minutes • Decrease GHG emissions from transportation by 29% 6 Metrolinx has the Largest Investment in Public Transit Metrolinx has $16 billion in transit projects underway – over 40kms of light rail transit (LRT), 59 kms of bus rapid transit (BRT) and an 8.6km subway extension ReNew Magazine’s Top 100 of Canada’s Biggest Infrastructure Projects for 2014 has 10 Metrolinx projects that made the list.
