The Six Principles of the Constitution by Lydia York Popular Sovereignty The government is run by the consent of the people This is important because without popular sovereignty it wouldn't be a democracy anymore because the government would have all the power Starbucks has a website called My Starbucks Idea (mystarbucksidea.force.com) that lets customers submit their ideas or concerns If the customers really hate a specific drink, Starbucks will modify it, or simply take it off the menu Limited Government The government is bound by the rule of law This is important because if the federal government had no basis of how to govern, it would be too powerful Starbucks is bound by Business Ethics and Compliance and Standards of Business Conduct These standards outline how Starbucks must treat their customers and employees, as well as their business practices Separation of Powers The government has three branches that are of equal power, but have different roles It's important because the nation is not being run by just one entity, but three, and they each have different jobs so one branch isn't responsible for everything Starbucks has many different positions that are in charge of different roles. For example: Legal, Customer Service, IT, Marketing, Public Affairs Checks and Balances The three branches of government have some degree of power over each other in order for the branches to be equal This principle is important because without it, one branch would be more powerful Managers Customers Complain Refund / remake drink Staff Federalism Federalism means that there is a federal government and individual state governments It’s important because it allows the states to make laws based on their needs but still be united under one federal government At Starbucks Howard Schultz is the CEO, but there are several branches worldwide Judicial Review The Judiciary Branch has the power to decide if a law or act is constitutional It’s important because it makes sure that the government follows the constitution Starbucks can get health inspections to make sure that it’s following the Standards of Business Conduct, and basic health and safety regulations
