The ending
At the end of World War II, in 1945 the winning
Powers, mainly USA, Great Britain, France
and the USSR divided Germany into East and
West.
This was decided by British Prime Minister
Winston Churchill, US President Harry S. Truman
and Russian Leader Josef Stalin
The Western Parts of Germany
were ruled by the three
Western Allies, Great Britain,
USA and France.
The Eastern part was ruled
by the Soviet Union, also known
as USSR.
In 1949, two separate German
States were established:
In the West – The Federal Republic
of Germany (West Germany)
In the East – German Democratic
Republic (East Germany)
Berlin which was in the middle of
East Germany was also divided into
East and West Berlin
Cold War can be described as a
conflict between Eastern and
Western powers
 In many cases there was no actual
fighting with arms with some
exceptions, like the Korean War
(1950-1953)

East vs West =
Communism vs Democracy
At the height of the conflict Berlin was
divided by the Berlin Wall (1961)
Many Eastern
European
countries
became
Communist
as well
Both East and West
started a race of
developing weapons
of mass destruction
The communist countries had a
Military Alliance called the Warsaw Pact
The Western countries
had also a Military
Alliance called NATO
Atomic & Nuclear Weapons
During the Cold War
There was a lot of
Espionage (Spying
The main players in the Espionage Game were
the CIA from the USA and the KGB for the USSR
Famous spies include
current Russian Prime
Minister Wladimir
Putin.
Captured spies were
often exchanged at
the
famous “Checkpoint
Charlie” in Berlin
In 1989 a revolt against communism,
starting in
Hungary, the Czech Republic
and East Germany, led to the
Fall of the Berlin Wall
Subsequently East & West Germany
were re-united. This was supported
by the American President Ronald Reagan
and USSR Leader Gorbachev.
It was here Germany and Europe were
