Cesar Perez Weekly Reflection 10 This week reflection focuses on which courses were beneficial and which were not beneficial for me in my opinion. It is important to reflect on this subject because maybe by looking back and remembering I will find that all courses were beneficial in one way or another. In my opinion I believe all the courses were beneficial and necessary in order to become a physical educator. The one course that I believe tied all the kinesiology courses together was fitness appraisals class. I believe this course made us bring all the knowledge from the kinesiology courses and create a physical education program that we would present in class. In order to create this program we needed to know the material from all the classes. For example motor learning was needed in order to understand motor movements at different ages. This ensures that we pick age appropriate activities. On the other hand, anatomical kinesiology is important to a physical educator because as physical educators we need to be able to teach them proper muscle terminology. For example when doing stretches we can call the actual muscle name rather than making a name up for the stretch. Another course that is used a lot in P.E is exercise physiology. This course is one of the most important ones because this course contains all kind of information that we use every day in P.E. It helps us learn about VO2 max as well as how to take body fat measurements. These are two things that are important in physical education. We do fitnesgram testing and one of the tests is BMI. Another test is the pacer test which has to do with endurance. This course gives us the ability to back up our lessons with actual science. Another class that is important is special populations. I did not have to make modifications during my internship but I am sure I will need to in the future and this course gave me the knowledge to be able to do it. As for the physical education courses I believe all of them are needed because they introduce us to a variety of different sports and activities. This is important because this way we have a notion on different sports. One of the classes I thought was the most important was adventures. This class was interesting and it showed us a different way of doing physical activity. I used these activities throughout my internship and the students really enjoyed them. Some books that I found helpful throughout my UTEP years were ACSM’s Resources as well as the exercise physiology book. They help refresh my memory whenever I feel like I forgot about a subject. Another book that is helpful is the adventures book; there are a lot of different activities in it. Overall, like I mentioned earlier I believe all the courses contributed to my learning experience in one way or another. I believe all the courses prepared me well to be out in the real world teaching. I felt very comfortable and knowledgeable out in my internship thanks to the courses. It is important that we, physical educators, stay up to date with journals and articles in order to make sure that we are providing a great physical education experience to our students. I will make sure to keep up to date with articles and books especially at these times where P.E is making a shift and leaving old habits behind.
