Resources:
The Course Syllabus can be found on the homepage of the DHY256 online site. It is labeled
“Syllabus.”
The required textbook for this course is Applied Pharmacology for the Dental Hygienist, 6th
Edition, by Elena Bablenis Haveles. This week you need to read Chapter 1 titled “Information,
Sources, Regulatory Agencies, Drug Legislation, and Prescription Writing” (pages 2-11). Also,
you need to read Chapter 2 titled “Drug Action and Handling” (pages 12-27).
The Module 1 Power Point can be found under “Course Materials” when you are logged into the
DHY 256 site when you click on the Module 1 button. This presenation will be especially
helpful for you to use when studying for the Module 1 Quiz that needs to be completed by the
conclusion of Week 2. I would recommend printing this resource and making notes on it for you
to use to study for and reference during your quizzes. Highlighting important parts of the text
book and having that avialable as a resource may also be helpful.
The YouTube video on Brand vs. Generic Drugs can be found under “Course Materials” when
you click on the Module 1 button.
To participate in the Module 1 Blogging and commenting activities you will need to have all of
the readings completed. You can access the Mod 1 Blog by clicking on “Blogging” on the course
homepage navigation panel and then the button for Module 1. Remember that your initial
response is due by Friday of Week 1. Your intial response will be a reflection about your
learning so far in this Module.Your comments to another student should be professional in tone
and languae and should deepen the conversation on the topic. Remember, you have until Sunday
at midnight to respond to one of your classmates to earn credit on this assignment.
Unit Assessment:
You will be required to take the Module 1 quiz by the conlcusion of Week 2, but it is best to
begin studying early. You can only attempt this quiz once. All quizzes can be found under
“Course Materials” on the homepage of the course site under the appropriate Module heading.
A few notes about taking online quizzes:
 This assessment is “open book” however, it is important for you to study and review the
information in this course frequently. Furthermore, because the test is “open book” you
should expect the questions to be more in-depth. They will be formatted as multiple
choice questions, however, they may be designed differently than other mulitple choice
quizzes that you have taken in the traditional classroom. These questions are designed so
that the answers are not directly in the book, just the information for determining the
answer is. I want you to be aware of these facts before your first quiz especially if this is
your first online class. Please contact me if you have any concerns or questions about
online testing.
 There will be no opportunities for re-taking quizzes.
 All online quizzes will be graded within 48 hours and feedback will be provided on your
results.
Looking Ahead to the Term Paper:
Although we are only in Module 1, it would be a good idea to start thinking about what drug you
want to research for this project.
Here are the associated due dates for this assignment:
 By Week 4, you will need to chose and have a drug approved as the topic for your Term
Paper.
 By Week 6, an outline of your paper is due.
 By Week 11 the rough draft of your paper should be complete.
 The Final Draft of your Term Paper will be due at the end of the 13th week of the course.
Final notes:
The Term Paper may seem like a lot of work right now, but remember, we will be breaking it
down into little pieces so that it will be more manageable. I just want you to start thinking about
the project this week. I will give you specific directions each Module in this instructional
document to keep you on task with this paper as well as with your other requirements. As
always, if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
