This is a flipped class where students are responsible for watching & taking notes on assigned videos at home so that they can work with the material in class. Prerequisites for this class are successful completion of Algebra I and Geometry. There is an extra quality point associated with this class. Students will be required to master outlined chemistry objectives with extended topics following an accelerated pacing schedule. This class will be taught using a thematic approach, centered around 7 real life themes. Supplies pencil or pen (blue or black) bound composition book scientific or graphing calculator 1-2 in. 3 ring binder 7 dividers: (one for each unit) highlighter ¼ inch graph paper ream of paper (last names A-L) paper towels (last names M-Z) Access to Internet Course Goals Students will be prepared to be critical & independent thinkers. Students will be able to use scientific problem solving to address scientific and societal issues. Students will understand that science is a cooperative effort. Students will learn how to conduct a lab investigation & be able to interpret & communicate their results. Curriculum Calendar 1st quarter 2nd quarter Unit 1: Scientists Tools Unit 4b: Glow in the Dark Unit 2: Antacids Unit 5: Soap Unit 3: Airbags Unit 4a: Glow in the Dark Unit 6: Sports Drinks Unit 7: Hot & Cold Packs Testing Test days for science are Thursday & Friday. If you fail a Unit test, you will have the opportunity to earn points back to your test, not to exceed a 70% by completing a test analysis form within 2 weeks of the original test. This can only be done on Mondays. Honors Chemistry Semester 1 2015-2016 Class Behavior 1. Actively participate in class & respect the rights of every individual in class. Please raise your hand when you want to ask a question or express a thought. 2. ABSOLUTELY no food or drinks are allowed in the room or lab area. Water bottles are to remain in your backpack. Do not take them out! 3. Don’t be tardy! Be prepared for class! 4. The bell does not dismiss the class, I do! Please remain in your seat. Do not stand by the door. 5. No cell phones are prohibited in class unless we are working with them as part of a lesson. A sign on the board will let you know when usage is allowed. A bonus will be applied to your grade for following this rule. Expectations Upon Entering Class As you enter the room, pick up any handouts from the computer station. If you were absent, check the MakeUp Work station to pick up any missed handouts. Place late work, work from an absence or any other items that need my attention in my "inbox”. Make Up Work Each student is responsible for getting missed assignments due to an excused absence. Failure to complete any missing work in the allotted time will result in a zero. I Will Not Come To You! After an unexpected absence, go to the Make-Up Work station & pick up missed handouts from crate. Consult a student from class or the wiki calendar for class details. Fill out quiz/test request form & submit to me as soon as possible. For each day you are absent, you will have an equal number of days to make up the missed work. If you know you will be absent, consult me ahead of time to get your work. All quizzes and tests need to be made up within 1-2 days following an absence. If you miss the day of a quiz/test, you should be ready to take it on the day you return if time permits. All missed assignments that are graded need to be placed in my "inbox" within the first 5 minutes of class or will be considered late. You must complete/attach a grade change form If you are absent on a lab day, you will make up the lab by following the directions on the wiki for the appropriate lab Late Work Grades 100-90 A 89-80 B 79-70 C 69-60 D 59-0 F Most late work will be accepted with a Formal ( tests, quizzes,projects) one letter grade deduction per day Informal (labs, CW, HW) late. (unless there is extenuating Final Grades are calculated by: circumstances). You have until the close of the nine weeks to turn in late Quarter 1: 60% formal 20% informal assignments. Make every effort to be in your seat with supplies ready to go. be kept at home to support your understanding of each unit. It is expected that you read the sections of each unit before we cover the material. Bathroom Passes are for the semester. Once all of the opportunities to use the rest room are gone, you will not be able to use the bathroom unless a note from home is brought in. Do not lose the pass! No replacements! Bonus points are earned at the end of the semester for any unused boxes. Text Book Website Each student is required to participate in lab & inquiry activities. These are essential for success on the unit tests. All lab data and questioning will be kept in the interactive notebook (comp book). Students will be assessed on lab understanding by taking lab quizzes and/ or turning in completed data tables, analysis questions & conclusion paragraphs. Vodcasts can be watched as you tube videos on computers, ipods, ipads, smart phones, etc.. They are linked to the class wiki. Notes will be collected at the beginning of each period to check if homework was completed & class openers will assess your understanding of the material. Each unit will get a quiz grade that is an average of the notes grade. Late grades are not given for video notes. A wonderful resource! HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK CHEATING Most nights you will watch a vodcast of the next day’s lesson taking notes as you go. An online HW program called QUEST will also be submitted per subunit of study. You will submit the answers online. Cheating is not allowed!! Giving or receiving help on a test and/ or quiz, or copying any form of class work, homework, or lab work are all examples of cheating. Please keep your personal integrity intact with me. A zero, a phone call home, and a detention will be issued if found cheating. Calculators & other materials will not be shared during testing situations. All cell phones will be turned in during a unit test. Soto: CB 3 4 Honors Chemistry Semester 1 2015-2016 QUEST is an online homework website developed and maintained by UTexas, which allows students to submit work electronically for a grade. This format allows students to get immediate feedback on their performance in content objectives. Quest assignments are given with up to 1 week of time prior to their due date. The due dates for Quest Assignments are RIGID. You will receive a zero if the assignment is not completed. You will have ONLY 2 requests per quarter to reopen an assignment(must email me) & it will receive a 25% deduction on the earned score. A yellow ticket will be submitted for a grade change.
