Department / Course Equivalencies 1. How do I read the abbreviations of classes? Classes are labeled with first the department abbreviation followed by a course number. Course numbers will start with a 0,1,2,3, or 4. Classes that start with a 0 are remedial classes and do not count for credit towards a CMU degree. Classes that start with 1 or 2 are lower division credits and classes that begin with a 3 and 4 are upper division credits. Classes that do not fit a certain department of learning but still have academic merit will transfer into Colorado Mesa University as an elective course and will be abbreviated at ELEC. Department abbreviations may look different from previous colleges, CMU abbreviations are as followed.
