AN APPROVED 12-CREDIT COGNATE OR A SPECIALIZATION IN HEALTH PROMOTION OR COACHING.
Adapted Physical Activity prepares students who are interested in improving the health, physical activity and wellness of
individuals with disabilities in educational, community and clinical settings, or who plan to pursue disciplinary research
involving participants who have disabilities. Cognate requirements: KIN360* - Physical Growth/Motor Behavior, KIN365* Sensorimotor Control, KIN465 - Adapted Physical Activity and 6 approved elective credits. Requires KIN492 Internship.
Administration prepares students who are interested in business and sports administration in a variety of settings. Cognate
requirements: KIN453 - Admin of Intramural Sports Programs, KIN454 - Facility Planning & Construction, KIN456 - Ethical Issues in
Athletics and 4 approved elective credits. Requires KIN492 Internship.
Biomechanics/Orthotics & Prosthetics is for students interested in working to construct, fit, maintain, evaluate and repair
braces, artificial appliances, joints, arch supports, and other surgical and medical appliances. Students may also pursue a
variety of research applications in human movement. It is suggested that students interested in biomechanics and who have
a strong background in mathematics consider an additional major in Mechanical Engineering. Cognate requirements:
KIN217 - Applied Human Anatomy, KIN360* - Physical Growth/Motor Behavior, KIN365* - Sensorimotor Control, KIN371 - Intro to
Research Methods, KIN465 - Adapted Physical Activity and 2 approved elective credits. Requires KIN492 Internship.
Communication is for students who are interested in sport, health, and wellness promotion through careers in sales,
marketing, advertising, journalism/broadcast, event management, etc. Cognate requirements: KIN445 - Sociocultural Analysis
of Activity, KIN453 - Admin of Intramural Sports Programs, KIN456 - Ethical Issues in Athletics and 4 approved elective credits. Requires
KIN492 Internship.
Exercise Physio/Cardiac Rehab: Relates to the study of response and adaptation to a wide range of physical exercise
conditions. Exercise physiologists range from basic scientists, to clinical researchers, to clinicians, to cardiovascular
clinicians, to sports trainers. Cognate requirements: KIN125 - First Aid/Personal Safety, KIN217 - Anatomy Cadaver Lab, KIN371 Intro to Research Methods, KIN411 - Exercise Physiology Lab, KIN465 - Adapted Physical Activity. Requires KIN493 Internship.
Fitness Leadership: Prepares students to work in health management, health promotion and wellness and education
settings as personal trainers, strength/conditioning coaches, corporate and community wellness/recreation supervisors, etc.
Cognate requirements: KIN125 - First Aid/Personal Safety, KIN217 - Anatomy Cadaver Lab, KIN411 Exercise Physiology Lab, KIN465 Adapted Physical Activity and 3 approved elective credits. Requires KIN493 Internship.
Growth & Motor Development is designed to help students gain an understanding of a life-span approach to motor skill
acquisition and the overall development of children and youth, including children’s acquisition of sports skills. Cognate
requirements: KIN360* - Physical Growth/Motor Behavior, KIN365* - Sensorimotor Control, KIN371 - Intro to Research Methods,
KIN465 - Adapted Physical Activity and 3 approved elective credits. Requires KIN492 Internship.
Nutrition for Physical Activity: Relates to fitness and wellness and can lead to careers in corporate wellness, fitness
leadership, personal training, human nutrition, sports nutrition, exercise physiology and athletic training. Cognate
requirements: KIN371 - Intro Research Methods, KIN411 - Exercise Physiology Lab and 7 approved elective credits. Requires KIN493
Internship.
Pre-Professional: Allows students to prepare for graduate school admission. Additional cognate electives should be
selected to meet graduate school admission requirements. Cognate requirements: KIN125 - First Aid/Personal Safety, KIN217 Anatomy Cadaver Lab, KIN371 - Intro Research Methods, KIN465 - Adapted Physical Activity and 3 approved elective credits. Requires
KIN492 Internship.
Psychosocial Aspects of Physical Activity is for students who are interested in careers related to teaching, conducting
research, and serving in leadership roles in physical education, sport, fitness, and educational organizations. Cognate
requirements: KIN371 - Intro Research Methods in KIN, KIN345* - Sport and Exercise Psychology, KIN445* - Sociocultural Analysis,
KIN465 - Adaptive Physical Activity and 3 approved elective credits. Requires KIN492 Internship.
