CSIT 101 Assignment 1: Information Literacy Michelle Gaither Technology current event article – topic –Mobile/Emerging Technology The first article I read, Users Frustrated by Apple iOS Update was about the frustration that people were experiencing with the Apple iOS update. Because the new operating system requires 5.8 GB of storage, many people had to delete files, photos, and videos to free up space in order to use the new system. This article also discussed how Apple takes privacy seriously and that Apple wants it known that it would not hand over data to government authorities. Two additional web articles on the same topic. Write a paragraph that compares the results from the two searches. Search Engine: Mozilla Site: The Economist Keywords: Technology Smartphones on Wheels Search Engine: Yahoo Site: CNN Keywords: Tech Reports Suggest the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus May Bend in Your Pocket I searched for two additional web articles on the same topic as the previous article, using two different search engines. The search engines that I used were Mozilla Firefox and Yahoo. I found both easy to use and really did not prefer one over the other. I went to a suggested web site, typed in a keyword, and several articles were available on the subject that I was interested in for both search engines that I used. TRRAAP your sources 1. Time – when was it written? Has it been updated? The article was written on September 23, 2014 at 5:20 EDT, and the article has been updated on September 24, 2014 at 11:56 AM. 2. Relevance – does it relate to your topic or answer your question? Yes, it relates to my topic of Mobile/Emerging Technology. 3. Reliability – can you determine the source of the information? Can you tell what research methods were used? CNN – Tech- arstechnica. The author had cited MacRumors and Geek.com. 4. Authority – Who is the author? Are they qualified to write about this topic? How do you know? 1 CSIT 101 Assignment 1: Information Literacy Michelle Gaither The first author of the article, Andrew Cunningham was noted as having a B.A. in Classics from Kenyon College and has over five years’ experience in IT. His work has appeared on ChargeShot!!! and AnandTech. This article was soon updated by a different author, Ben Rooney, who was noted as being a CNN money market reporter. 5. Accuracy – is the information trustworthy? Is it supported by evidence: Has it been tested for accuracy? I used a website that was suggested to use with this assignment, which I believe to be trustworthy. A video along with the article shows evidence of the iPhone 6 bending. 6. Purpose – why was it written, to inform, sell, persuade? Is there a bias or is the material objective? I feel that this article was written to inform the public of the bending issues with the iPhone 6. I did not get the impression that the article was biased. I feel that it was objective and was simply letting people know that the iPhone 6 may bend in your pocket. Find two scholarly journal articles on the same topic from the CCBC library databases. For the first article from the CCBC library databases, I used EBSCO, and the second article, I used Lexis Nexis Academic for the search engines. I used these search engines because of the choices of articles that were offered for the topic that I was researching. Keywords that I used for both articles were mobile technology. Compare the Web and Journal articles. I found the ease of access for both Web and Journal articles to be straightforward. Both articles were current, reporting about current issues Apple was experiencing with the new iOS 8 update and the new iPhone 6. I trust both authors content from these articles, but tend to lean towards the Journal article. I feel that the databases that I used from the CCBC library were more reliable sources than just going on the Web. Cite all five sources in APA or MLA format. Specify the format you are using. I will be using the APA format. Users Frustrated by Apple iOS Update. (18 September 2014). Retrieved from bbc.com/news/technology Rooney, B. (2014). Is the iPhone 6 Plus Bendable?
