Algebra Expanding Brackets and Simplifying Algebra So far we have looked at simplifying expressions like 3x + 2y + 2x + 4y collecting the like terms to make 5x + 6y Algebra We have also looked at expanding an expression where brackets are involved 2x(2x + 3y) To 4x2 + 5y Algebra Now we are going to take it one step further. Often we will be presented with an expression that has two sets of brackets 2(3x + 4) + 2x(2y +3) Algebra This may look complicated but it is very simple, just use the rules we are learning. First we need to multiply out the brackets: 2(3x + 4) + 2x(2y +3) 6x + 8 + 4xy + 6x Algebra Then we collect the terms that are the same together: 6x + 8 + 4xy + 6x 6x + 8 + 4xy + 6x 6x + 6x + 8 + 4xy Algebra Finally, we simplify if possible: 6x + 6x + 8 + 4xy 12x + 8 + 4xy
