Welcome to the 2012/2013 Swimming Season
Welcome to the Berri Swimming Club for what we are all anticipating will be
another fantastic summer filled with some great swimming and fun.
As always, we have a calendar that is filled with a variety of carnivals, club
swims and interclub swims.
A Note From Terry
Welcome to the 2012/13 season with the Berri Swimming Club.
Again this year I would like all our swimmers to be on the pool deck at
5.45pm on training nights. This will give us approximately 15 minutes to
warm up and stretch and be ready to be in the water at 6.00pm.
There will be a Boy Captain and Girl Captain chosen again this season,
also a leadership group of possibly 4 other swimmers. Their role will be to
take the squad for stretches, keep the squad together, taking junior lanes
every now and again, looking after new swimmers, and working with
coaches and committee members. They will be very responsible positions.
Again this year our theme will be to have lots of fun and to challenge
ourselves. Remember: “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe - it
can achieve.”

Berri Swimming Club – Training Squads
Junior Swimming Squad
The Junior Squad is designed for children able to swim with formed strokes – freestyle and
backstroke at least – who wish to improve their swimming fitness and correct their stroke with the
aim of joining the main squad. This is not a learn-to-swim program, but rather aims to progress
and develop children that already have basic swimming skills.
The junior squad trains on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, the 30 minute sessions are held at
either 6.00pm or 6.30pm with children allocated to groups depending on their swimming ability.
These classes are initially held in the intermediate pool at the Berri Swimming Pool, with classes
progressing into the 50 mt pool when ability and confidence allows.
Trials for the Junior Swimming Squad will he held on:
The program will be held during December, January and February, excluding the Christmas/New
Year Period.
Program Fees:
For additional swimmers in families that are already members of the Berri Swimming Club:
$
– if the family already holds club family membership, or
$
– if the family members are currently registered as individuals.
For swimmers in families that are not currently registered with the Berri Swimming Club:
$
– per child for the Junior Squad program ($62.00 of this goes to Swimming SA for
registration and insurance).
Plus $
– for one parent to become an associate member of the Berri Swimming Club ($20.00
of this goes to Swimming SA, all swimmers under the age of 18 yrs must have one parent
registered with the club as an associate member).
ALL SWIMMERS MUST HOLD A YMCA SEASON TICKET FOR THE BERRI POOL
Junior Squad Swimmers are encouraged to participate in Club Swimming carnivals (held on
Friday evenings as listed in the program) and progress to competing for the Berri Swimming Club
at Interclub carnivals once their ability and fitness allows. The graded system at the Interclub
carnivals allows all of our swimmers to swim with others of the same ability.
Junior Swimmers MUST have a parent or responsible family member present while they are
swimming with the junior squad. The Berri Swimming Club is not able to accept responsibility for
Junior Swimmers unless they are supervised by a family member.
7
Berri Club Swimming Squad
The main squad is designed for children and adults that train and compete for the club. Training is
held in the 50 metre pool in the evenings from 5.45 – 7.15pm (Monday-Thursday) and in the
mornings from 6.00 – 7.00am (Monday-Friday) during the Christmas school holidays.
Swimmers will be placed in specific lanes for training purposes by the head coach. This will allow
them to train with swimmers of similar abilities and with a program suited to their fitness level. The
club does not expect swimmers to attend all training sessions, and appreciates the time
commitment involved and the fact that swimmers have other commitments and interests.
Swimmers are encouraged to attend at least 3 sessions per week either in the morning or the
evening to sustain their fitness levels.
The squad of swimmers selected to attend the South Australian Country Championships will be
expected to attend additional training sessions in the lead up to the championships. The head
coach will make swimmers aware of the training program after selection of the team. For
additional information regarding the South Australian Country Championships see page 16.
On arrival at training, squad swimmers are required to tick their names off in the Swimmers Roll
Book in the clubrooms and check for notices on the noticeboard/whiteboard. Parents are needed
to put the lane ropes into the pool at 5.55pm and pull them out at 7.10pm.
Program Fees:
The fees for the Berri Swimming Club comprise several components, all of which need to be paid
in order to swim with the club; Berri Swimming Club membership, Swimming SA membership and
YMCA season tickets.
The club fees are the contribution you make towards the running of the club and the provision of
experienced coaches and quality equipment for your benefit and enjoyment.
Swimming SA membership/registration provides swimmers with insurance cover, and allows
swimmers to compete at Interclub and Open carnivals.
The Berri Swimming Club has no control over either the Swimming SA component of the fees, or
the YMCA requirement that all club members must be season ticket holders (at the concession
rate). The YMCA imposed this fee without any discussion with the club, and it has been supported
by the Berri Barmera Council.

Swimmers under 18 years of age are required to have at least one parent/guardian as a
swimming member or parent member of the Berri Swimming Club and Swimming SA.
Senior Swimming Squad:
The senior squad is designed for high school students and adults that want to swim for fitness, but
don’t want to train with the main squad and complete the training programs. There is no coaching
support/ supervision for this squad, it is simply allowing an opportunity for swimmers to complete
their own training programs in their own time.
The YMCA reduced pool access for the swimming club to 4 lanes, which limits the availability of a
lane for adults that wish to swim for fitness (&fun) during the main training session. The club has
initiated the Senior squad to give adult swimmers the opportunity to swim independent of the main
squad (ie in peace & quiet without being run over by the young guns!). This is also an opportunity
for senior swimmers to swim in the evenings at an alternative time that may be more convenient.
Senior swimmers are also encouraged to compete at club and interclub swims.
The evenings that the pool is available for Senior swimmers (6.45 – 7.15pm) will depend on the
number of swimmers wanting to swim at this time. The club is unable to provide an observer at
this later time, and it is up to the Senior swimmers to organise an observer during the training
sessions to ensure the safety of all swimmers.

Types of Swimming Carnivals
Berri Club Swims:
Club swims are scheduled through the season as shown in the club calendar. Club swims give the
swimmers that opportunity to improve their times/grades and practice their racing style and
techniques. They are held on Friday evening at the Berri Swimming Pool, with any swimmer who
is a member of the Berri Swimming Club eligible and encouraged to compete.
To nominate for a club swim use the white cards in the clubrooms (these are free of charge) and
fill in the date/meet/name/declared time. Declared times in minutes, seconds and 100th
seconds shall be the swimmers best current competitive time, that is, the best time swum
in the six months prior to entry. (Points for trophies will not be awarded if swimmers have
declared incorrect times).
A swimmer who has no recorded time in a particular stroke will swim their first 50m swim as a
“time only”, once a time has been recorded the swimmer will be graded based on that time.
Once a swimmer breaks a time of 50 seconds for a 50m swim they are then required to
swim 100m events to gain further points.
Club swims generally consist of Scratch Races. The event is divided into heats based on grades,
commencing with the slowest grade and progressing to the fastest grade.
Berri Club Closed Championships:
To be eligible to swim in the Club Champs swimmers must have compete in at least 3 Interclub
swims and be a fully financial member of the club (ie no outstanding monies owed to the club,
either subs or Muriel’s Boutique/uniforms). The eligibility criteria is reduced to 2 Interclub swims
for swimmers in their first season competing for the club.
Club Champs consists of scratch races, conducted in age groups for each of the four strokes.
Nominations for this event are to be forwarded to the Nominations Officer on white club cards. The
program will be placed on the noticeboard in early February.
Thora Prisk: The final for the Thora Prisk 400m handicap event is swum on Club Champs day.
Heats are conducted earlier in the season – the date is on the calendar. All swimmers are
encouraged to enter the Thora Prisk, being a handicap event everyone has an equal chance of
winning. Generally the preferred stroke is freestyle, but swimmers are welcome to swim any
stroke as long as it is declared on the nomination card.
Handicap races are divided into heats based on declared times. Each swimmer in each heat is
given a ‘go mark” which is the handicap in seconds. The swimmer starts his/her race when the
starter calls out their number. The swimmer must start on the correct handicap number. The aim
of the race is to be the first swimmer to finish, with a time that is under their declared time. If the
swimmer swims faster than their declared time they are disqualified.
Freestyle Championship 200m: The final of this event is also held on Club Champs day, with
heats held through the season, usually at the same time as the Thora Prisk heats.
Medals are awarded at Club Championships for the swimmers scoring the highest number
of each points in each age group – 1st, 2nd & 3rd medal in each age group.
11
Riverland Swimming Association – Interclub Carnivals:
The Riverland Swimming Association conduct a number of carnivals throughout the season in
which the Berri Swimming Club is able to compete as a team.
Points Swims: There are 3 Points swims held every season, where all 4 Riverland clubs (Berri,
Loxton, Renmark & Waikerie) compete against each other at the same pool – either Loxton or
Renmark.
Each time the program of events is different.
Pennant Swims: At a Pennant swim the Berri Swimming Club competes against one of the other
Riverland swimming clubs. Three Pennant swims are conducted throughout the season and the
program is the same every time
For both types of Interclub swims there is a shield for the overall winning Club.
Swimmers must be registered with Swimming SA to be eligible to compete at Interclub swims.
The first time you swim a stroke at Interclub you have to swim a 50m Time Only event, you are
then given a grade to swim at the next Interclub. When a swimmer breaks 50 seconds in any
stroke for 50m they will subsequently be required to swim in 100m events for that stroke.
The grading system means that swimmers of varying ages will be competing against each other –
adults may be swimming in the same event as junior swimmers. Although the ages may be very
varied, swimmers are placed in races with swimmers of similar abilities.
The dates and venues of all interclub carnivals are shown on the club calendar.
When an Interclub carnival is imminent, swimmers are asked to indicate their availability to swim
in the Swimmers’ roll book located in the clubrooms, no later than the Tuesday before the carnival.
The Team Managers then select a team using up-to-date grades and PB’s. There is a limit to how
many people can swim each stroke for each grade; the program being swum sets this. Therefore,
factors such as a swimmer’s fitness and the number of swims they have are used to work out a
Team to swim at interclub. This means that not everyone can swim every stroke.
There are also Graded Relays, this means the Team Managers pick four swimmers from the
grade or combined grades. They then swim the stroke that they are in that grade for. More points
are awarded for relays than for individual swims so they are very important.
At a Points Carnival points are awarded to the club for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings, and all other
swimmers gain one point for their club regardless of where they finish in the race.
At a Pennant Carnival points are awarded to the club for 1 st, 2nd and 3rd placings. These are all
graded scratch races, with swimmers grades based on times achieved at previous Interclub
swims.
It is important for the club to have people of all ages and abilities as the more spread our
swimmers are across the grades the more points are available for the club. When you are racing
there will be other Berri swimmers in the race but everyone is racing for points for the club. The
best result we can have is for Berri to have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in one race.
12
Many hours of work go into the team selection process. The Team Managers aim to select the
best possible team to gain the maximum amount of points. Therefore it is very important that you
inform the team managers as early as possible that you are not able to swim at the competition –
definitely before the carnival starts. Necessary changes can be made, still allowing our best team
to swim.
Swimmers failing to attend a carnival with little or no notification, leave big gaps in our team, and
maybe penalised when selecting future teams.
All PB’s swum at interclub are recorded by the club and individuals are awarded points towards a
trophy at the end of the season. Individuals are also given points for winning a race in their grade.
Just remember at Interclub swims you are swimming for the Berri Swimming Club and like every
team sport everyone is important, we could not have a team with just one swimmer. The more
people we have the more individual and relay swims we can put in and the more chance we have
of winning.
All swimmers are required to wear Club Uniform as they are representing the Berri
Swimming Club when swimming at Interclub Carnivals.
The coaches and team managers will have programs on the day of the swim, and will help
swimmers work out which events they are swimming. It is important the swimmers mark
themselves as present on the roll board as soon as they arrive at the carnival. The roll board will
also let you know how many swims you have for the carnival.
If you have any questions about Interclub swims please speak to the Team Managers at a
mutually convenient time.
Regrading – if a swimmer does not swim to their graded time for 3 consecutive swims they are
regraded on the average time of their last three swims. Swimmers in grades 9 to E can only be
regraded to a 100 m grade. Swimmers in grade 10 with 3 swims not to grade time are regraded to
grade 11. The grades are listed on Page 17
Riverland Swimming Association –
Riverland Closed Championships & Riverland Closed Long Distance Championships:
The Riverland Championships are conducted in a similar way to Open Carnivals; scratch races
with swimmers competing in age groups rather than in grades. To be eligible to compete in the
Riverland Closed Championships, swimmers must have swum or have been available to swim in
at least two Interclub meets. Available to swim is defined as having swum at the meets, swum on
a red card, swum at a state level meet scheduled the same weekend as in interclub meet, or at a
meet or event as required by Swimming SA as part of a selected team.
The program for the Riverland Closed Championships and Riverland Closed Long Distance
Championships is posted on the club noticeboard in February. Nominations are to be completed
on the Nominations Form.
All swimmers are required to wear Club Uniform as they are representing the Berri
Swimming Club when swimming at Interclub Carnivals.
Medals are awarded at the closed championships in the following way:
Riverland Closed Championships: 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in each event receive a medal. All
swimmers receive points for the club, scored on an 8-1 basis.
13
Riverland Closed Long Distance Championships: 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in each event
receive a medal. All swimmers receive points for the club, scored on an 8-1 basis.
Riverland Clubs compete for four perpetual trophies:
1. Points Competition – The Curren Trophy
The winner of the Points Competition shall be the Club with the highest aggregate of
points at the conclusion of the competition.
2. Pennant Competition – The Riverland Swimming Association Shield
The winner of the Pennant Competition shall be the Club with the most wins at the end of
the end of the season. Teams with an equal number of wins shall be separated by
aggregate points at the conclusion of the competition.
3. Riverland Closed Championships – The John Crispe Trophy
The winner is the Club gaining most combined points from the two closed events. Points
to be scored on an 8-1 basis.
4. Most Improved Club for the Season – The Peter Arnold Trophy
The winner is the club with the highest handicap score as calculated below. For each
club, the scores from the previous three years points and pennants are added together
and divided by three. Highest score is the benchmark receiving no handicap points, all
other club scores are subtracted from the benchmark. The resulting figure is that clubs
handicap. The handicap is added to the clubs points earned in the current year and the
highest total wins. (If you understand this then you are automatically elected president of
the Berri Swimming Club next season!)
Riverland & Eastern District Challenge Team
To be eligible for selection in the Riverland Super Challenge team swimmers need to have
competed in the Riverland Closed Championships for that season. Selection is based on finals
times in the Riverland Closed Championships for each event, with the fastest available swimmer
in the age group being selected. If no swimmer is available for and age group a swimmer from a
younger age group may be used. If an event is not filled from the Riverland Closed
Championships, Riverland Swimming Association may invite a swimmer to fill a vacancy.
The Team Manager, in consultation with one representative from each club, has the power to
arrange the selected team in such a manner as to give the most favourable results, bearing in
mind that a swimmer winning and event at the Riverland Closed Championships has the option to
swim the event.
14

2012/2013Swimming SA Swimmers Handbook pages 9-14, or online.
South Australian Country Championships:
The Country Championships are held annually, at a different country location each year. To be
eligible to compete in the Country Champs swimmers must be capable of achieving a Standard
Time for each event that they enter. The Standard Times are listed in the Swimmers’ Handbook,
under the entry for Country Championships. Swimmers do not have to meet standard times to be
eligible for selection in the relay teams.
All events are scratch races, swum in age groups, with the age taken on the date of the carnival.
The relay teams are selected by the Head Coach and Team Manager, swimmers will be notified of
their selection in the team.
All swimmers are required to wear Club Uniform as they are representing the Berri
Swimming Club when swimming at South Australian Country Championships.
Superfish Program:
This program is conducted as a prelude to the Country Championships and is for young registered
swimmers in the 8 and under, 9 yrs, 10 yrs, 11yrs,12 yrs and 13yrs age groups. Swimmers who
have not qualified for any individual event in the Country Championships will have the opportunity
to take part in 3 individual 50m swims. The Superfish Program aims to encourage younger
swimmers to experience the atmosphere of the Country Championships and acts as an incentive
for them to achieve qualifying times for future Country Championships. Further information will be
forwarded to eligible swimmers when it becomes available from Swimming SA. Nominations are
forwarded to the Nominations Officer on the yellow multiple entry cards.

Perpetual Trophies
Points System:
We have a weighted points system where swimmers earn points toward trophies at the end of the
season by competing for the club.
Points are weighted heavier towards competing for the club in Club Champs and Interclubs.
All swimmers will be graded for each event they swim according to the best time they have swum
at that distance, this grade is separate from the grade they swim at Interclubs which is determined
by the Riverland grading system.
For the purpose of the club trophies the club grade will be used for all point calculations.
All over 30 swimmers can regrade at the beginning of each season at their first swim. Swimmers
over the age of 30 that regrade are ineligible for perpetual trophies that are determined by
either the most number of personal best times (PB’s) or the most number of points.
Club Champs:
3 points for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place and 1 point for 3rd place.
All swimmers receive 1 point per race for swimming.
5 points for breaking Club Champs record.
Points for breaking best time: Swimmers will be awarded 1 point per PB towards the “Most
Improved Awards”.
The age group medal winners are not determined by this points total, please read the section on
the Club Champs day for more information.

These include the 3 Points and 3 Pennants swims as well as Riverland Closed and Riverland
Long Distance events.

Berri Swimming Club Uniform
The Berri Swimming Club uniform consists of club bathers and club swimming caps, with the Club
shirt, bucket hat and navy shorts. Swimmers are required to wear club uniform at any meet where
they are representing the club (Interclub meets, Open Carnivals, Swimming SA Carnivals and
Media Profiles/Photographs).
In previous years the Berri Resort Hotel has provided sponsorship which has allowed the club to
provide bucket hats free of charge to swimmers that compete for the club at Interclub meets.
Club bathers (standard design), caps and goggles are kept in stock at the club and are available
for purchase. The opening hours for Muriel’s Boutique will be advised at the start of the season.
Uniform purchases can only be made during the advertised opening hours for Muriel’s Boutique.
Racing/Performance bathers are available from Agon Swim and can be ordered online.
Club shirts, jumpers and bucket hats are not kept in stock at the club, but ordered from Tri-State
Graphics/Premier Sports as required. An order will be placed at the beginning of the season –
please keep in mind any uniform items you may require for Country Champs. The club provides
team badges for members of the Country Champs team.
