Message from Director
Jay Hart
Welcome to the city of Rio Rancho’s Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department. I hope that you find this brochure useful
as you navigate through and learn about the department and some of the many interesting and exciting programs we have to offer.
Whether you live here or are just visiting, I invite you to take advantage of the programs, facilities, parks, and special events available
to you. I encourage you to get involved and be active in your daily lives.
I’m excited to announce our recent update to our after school program which includes a name change and reflects more of a tutoring
focus. “Tutored by Teachers” defines what we do and more accurately reflects our target market which includes elementary and midschool students. We’ve employed two Rio Rancho Public School teachers and are committed to providing homework help to students.
“Tutored by Teachers” serves students from more than 15 schools, and the staff prides itself on being a high-quality program, with
strong improvements being documented in the students’ grades and reading proficiency. “Tutored By Teachers” fosters pathways for
success by positively influencing the relationship that school children have with learning.
Make plans now to have your children attend Rio Rancho’s popular Kamp Rio. Registration is at Haynes Park on Saturday, April 20
at 7:00 AM. This year we’re calling the registration at Haynes Park “Kamp-Out for Kamp-Rio”. For the families who plan on lining up
early on Friday and camping out under the stars, you’ll be able to enjoy an evening full of nighttime fun with a double feature on the
blow up movie screen, fun jumps, food vendors, and star gazing with the Rio Rancho Astronomical Society. Bring your own camping
equipment and Kamp-Out for Kamp-Rio!
Don’t miss out on the City of Vision Basketball Collision Tournament! Held at Rio Rancho and Cleveland high schools this
tournament is for 5th, 6th and 7th grade boys and girls. There will be a three-game minimum at $150 per team. The fee includes trophies
for 1st and 2nd place, certified referees, high school regulation courts, and t-shirts for all participants. It is sure to be a slam dunk!!!
The registration deadline is April 26.
Shine up your vintage car, truck, or hot rod because it is time to show them off at the 12th Annual Park ‘n The Park Car show held at
Cabezon Park on April 27. This is an all-ages event with a DJ playing some golden oldies. There will be plenty of concessions not to
mention amazing door prizes! Please join us at Park ‘n the Park for this spring tradition!
I am very proud of our facilities and a dedicated staff that make the whole system work. As stewards of Rio Rancho we assume the
honor, privilege, and responsibilities of the service and confidence our citizens have entrusted to us. We will continue to work hard
and strive to give our patrons the very best we have to offer. We encourage all members of the community to join us in promoting
active and healthy lifestyles through participation in parks and recreational activities. There is no better time to get started than right
now!
Sincerely,
Jay Hart

Class Descriptions
Aqua Fitness: Low-impact, high/low intensity, upright, shallow water workout set to music held in the recreation pool.
Aqua Therapy: Low-impact, low-intensity workout that emphasizes range of motion, strength training, and stretching held in either
the recreation or exit pool.
Aqua Zumba: Known as the Zumba “pool party,” the Aqua Zumba program gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating
workout. Splashing, stretching, twisting, laughing, hooting, hollering and even shouting are often heard during an Aqua Zumba class.
Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, the Aqua Zumba class blends it all together
into a safe, challenging, and water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all exhilarating beyond belief.

Families are invited to get in line early and camp out under the stars on Rosko Field at Haynes Park. This year, enjoy an evening full
of nighttime fun with a double feature on the blow-up screen, dodgeball in the tennis courts, and star gazing with the Rio Rancho
Astronomical Society. Bring your own camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, etc).
“Standing In Line” Rules and Etiquette
The Parks & Recreation Department staff makes every attempt to ensure that the registration for summer camp is a fair process for
everyone. The summer camp line is nothing unique. Throughout life, we are all subject to “standing in lines”: Black Friday shopping,
theme parks, concerts, at the grocery store, etc. As with every aspect of life, there is a protocol that should be followed.
•
Stay In Line At All Times. Anyone who has claimed a spot in the registration line is required to stay in line with the exception
of short restroom breaks. If an individual, who has claimed a spot in the registration line, needs to leave for any reason that person
needs to be replaced temporarily by a family member or friend until the person returns.
•
A Tent Or Chair Does Not Hold Your Place In Line. An individual will not be allowed to place a chair or tent to claim their
spot in the registration line. Do not leave for work/school/home/shopping/restaurants or anything else until your registration has
been accepted by Parks & Recreation staff or your tent and chairs will be removed by city staff.
•
Do Not Reserve Or Hold Spots For Others. Think how annoyed you would be after hours of waiting, suddenly and out of
nowhere, five friends join the person in front of you making your wait even longer?
•
Be Patient - Everyone in line is in the same situation. Don’t become irritated with others in line or with the Parks & Recreation
staff.
•
Restroom Break - If you leave the line for any amount of time longer than short restroom breaks, you cannot expect to come
back and take up your old place.
•
Respect Personal Space Of Others - While there is no need to stand body-to-body in the line, there is also no need to extend
your tent/bbq grill/chairs/picnic-tables, etc. amongst a large space. Doing so will only irritate people and heighten tensions.
•
No Smoking In Line! If you are a smoker, now is not the time to light up - save that until you get home.
•
No Line Jumping - Quite simply - don’t!
“Standing in line” has universally understood rules and etiquette, but there are still those who break the rules mentioned above. With
that said, the above rules apply and everyone’s cooperation and attention to this matter is sincerely appreciated.

Track & Field Games encourages kids to be the best they possibly can be. Track and field programs are a great way to help
children establish a love for physical fitness at an early age.
Facts:
You don’t need to be star athletes to participate in track and field…you just need to have fun! Get ready for an awesome

Some will even get the chance to go on to the North American Final Track & Field Meet held in Hershey, PA! Did we
mention that the trip to Hershey is totally free, and that it includes an afternoon at HERSHEYPARK Entertainment Complex
and a tour of the world’s largest chocolate factory!

T’ai Chi Chih
T’ai Chi Chih – serenity in the midst of activity – is a series of 19 movements and one pose which were originated by Justin Stone.
Mr. Stone taught T’ai Chi Ch’uan for many years before developing a new technique which he called T’ai Chi Chih. T’ai Chi Chih is
simple and easy to learn with benefits usually beginning from the first class. The gentle movements emphasize a flowing continuity
and strongly stimulate the flow and balance of Chi or the “vital force” in the body.
Benefits of regular T’ai Chi Chih practice can include stress reduction, weight and blood pressure control, increased energy, and a
greater enthusiasm for life. As the practitioner becomes relaxed a new understanding and perspective is formed, creative energy flows
more freely and greater joy in everyday life becomes apparent.

Mission Statement
“To create and maintain spaces and activities that grow a greater sense of community and enhance the quality of life for its residents.”
How to Watch a Good Program Die
Nothing kills a recreation program faster than residents who wait until the last minute to register. There is a point when a program
must be cancelled or modified if there is insufficient registration. All programs require a high level of coordination often including
facility scheduling, staffing, volunteer recruitment and purchasing of supplies.
Photo Policy
Participants permit the taking of photos and videos of themselves and their children during Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Department activities, programs, and special events for publication and use as the department deems necessary.
Volunteers
Many of our programs depend on volunteer help. If you wish to put your expertise to use in a program or would like to find out what
volunteer opportunities are available, please call us at 891-5015.
Sponsorship
The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department has many opportunities for sponsorships. We offer only first-class,
quality programs and special events. If you are interested in how we can help you reach your customers and promote your business,
contact Connie Peterson at 891-5015.

Summer Special Event:
Santa Fe Opera
This annual trip to the Santa Fe Opera provides an opportunity to enjoy some of the world’s most famous operas in a setting that is as
spectacular as the productions. This year’s selections are two much loved operas: La Traviata on August 16 and The Marriage of
Figaro on August 23. The evening includes first class transportation.
Glamour and gaiety are on full display in director-designer Laurent Pelly’s stunning vision of the Parisian demimonde, but so is a
much darker side. While elegant gowns and jewels create a glittering tableau, the partygoers of La Traviata are shown to inhabit a
cynical world of power relations.
The Marriage of Figaro is based on a daring play by Beaumarchais, a French supporter of the American Revolution whose modern
ideas challenged traditional thinking on class and privilege. His bold assertion of human dignity is present throughout Lorenzo da
Ponte’s libretto and Mozart’s score, but it takes the form of a dizzying sex farce that culminates in one of opera’s most profound
expressions of redemptive love.
Call MSC for specific information on the special opera registration in June.
Older adults are the fastest growing group of Internet users. Research has found that using a computer provides a better connection to
the world around us and is associated with fewer depressive symptoms. For example, computers offer a way to keep in touch with
family and friends. They also provide a tool for taking up new hobbies, such as genealogy. Computers open up a world of
possibilities!
