This form is to be completed and signed by the Volunteer Coach and must be approved by the Compliance Office prior
to the Volunteer Coach beginning his/her duties at SDSU each academic year. In addition to this form, the Volunteer
Coach must complete an SDSU Volunteer Identification Form with Linda Kimzey.
NCAA Bylaw 11.01.5 Coach, Volunteer: In sports other than football and basketball, a volunteer coach is any coach who does not receive
compensation or remuneration from the institution’s athletic department or any organization funded in whole or part by the athletics
department or that is involved primarily in the promotion of the institution’s athletics program (e.g. booster club, athletics foundation).
The following provisions shall apply:
-The individual is prohibited from contacting and evaluating prospective student-athletes off-campus or from scouting opponents offcampus.
-The individual may receive a maximum of two complimentary tickets to home athletics contests in the coach’s sport.
-The individual may receive complimentary meals incidental to organized team activities (e.g. pre or post-game meals, occasional
meals, but not training table meals) or meals provided during a prospective student-athlete’s official visit, provided the individual
dines with the prospective student-athlete.

*An SDSU volunteer coach cannot be a high school coach in the same sport. Volunteer coaches may coach a local sports

Permissible Activities







May receive compensation from employment in an SDSU sports camp or clinic, provided the
compensation is commensurate with the going rate for camp or clinic counselors of like
teaching ability and camp or clinic experience.
May receive compensation from outside the SDSU athletics department for performing duties
for another SDSU department or office, provided:
o Compensation received for those duties is commensurate with that received by others
performing those same or similar assignments;
o The time devoted to those duties is consistent with the time devoted to others receiving
commensurate compensation for the same or similar assignments; and
o The individual is qualified for and is performing the duties for which the individual is
compensated.
May receive a maximum of two complimentary tickets to home athletics contests in the coach’s
sport.
May receive complimentary meals incidental to organized team activities (e.g. pre or post-game
meals, occasional meals, but not training table meals) or meals provided during a prospective
student-athlete’s official visit, provided the individual dines with the prospective studentathlete.
May prepare general correspondence and emails to prospective student-athletes who have
reached September 1 of their junior year. Coaches in sports other than football, track &
field/cross country, and swimming/diving may send text messages to prospects starting Sept. 1
of the junior year.
May have contact with prospective student-athletes on official visits and may provide
transportation for prospects on official visits, within 30 miles of campus.
May make phone calls to prospects after they sign an NLI with SDSU.
Activities Prohibited under NCAA bylaws:






Contacting or evaluating prospective student-athletes off campus.
Scouting opponents off-campus.
Receiving any compensation from the SDSU athletics department, other than for camps.
Receiving any compensation from an SDSU booster club or foundation affiliated with San Diego
State Athletics.
Making phone calls to prospective student-athletes or their parents or coaches.
Posting on a prospective student-athlete’s social media page (i.e., Facebook, Twitter) prior to
the prospect signing an NLI with SDSU.
