Course Description In this course you will learn about the many places around the world where Spanish is spoken. You will learn about geography, history, and famous people. You will experience many aspects of culture, from everyday activities and holidays to music and art. You will grow to understand the great diversity of the people who speak Spanish. B. Learning Goals in General Education Understand utterances when listening and respond orally with learned material Produce learned words, phrases, and sentences when speaking and writing Detect main ideas in familiar material when listening and reading Make lists, copy accurately, and write from dictation Recognize the importance in communication to know about the culture Recognize the importance of acquiring accuracy of expression by knowing the components of language, including grammar C. Requirements Pencil/Pen Notebook paper Journal Students will be taking notes in their journal. Please refer to the notes and/or textbook to help with homework. D. Make up work will be due after a period of days equal to the length of absence plus one day to receive full credit. Late Work All work is expected to be turned in on time. 1 day late 70% Maximum 2 days late 50% Maximum 3 days late 0% Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty includes such things as cheating, inventing false information or citations, plagiarism, and helping someone else commit an act of academic dishonesty. Be prepared for class. 3. Complete assignments on time. 4. Be respectful. QUIZ: -ar verbs and ser. TEST: Spanish 1 Review. Spanish 1 Review: winter & summer activities, preterite, plural article words. Chapter 1: Train station, traveling by train, preterite of hacer querer & venir, irregular preterite verbs, and present and preterite of decir. QUIZ: vocabulary & preterite tense. TEST: Chapter 1. Begin Chapter 2 vocabulary. Quiz: chapter 2 vocab. Chapter 2: Restaurants, eating utensils, types of foods, stem-changing verbs in the present, stemchanging verbs in the preterite, and typical Mexican & Caribbean cuisine. QUIZ: Stemchanging verbs. TEST: Chapter 2. Chapter 3: Describing computers, how to use computer & fax, telephones, answering telephone, imperfect of –ar –er & –ir. TEST: Reading “El Ambar”. Cont. Chapter 3: imperfect of ser & ir. QUIZ: imperfect tense. Chapter 3 review. TEST: Chapter 3. Chapter 4: men’s clothing, women’s clothing, shoes, jewelry, and shopping for food. Using the preterite and the imperfect together. QUIZ: Vocabulary words & preterite & imperfect verbs. Week 12-14 Cont. Chapter 4: Narrating sequence of events, expressing feelings in the past, and passive voice with se. QUIZ: Preterite & imperfect. Chapter 4 Review. TEST: Chapter 4. Chapter 5: Pastimes & hobbies, the park, amusement park, and future tense. QUIZ: Vocabulary words. THANKSGIVING BREAK! Week 15-17 Chapter 5: Pastimes & hobbies, the park, amusement park, future tense, and comparatives and superlatives. QUIZ: Vocabulary words. Review for semester exam. SEMESTER EXAM Week 18-20 Chapter 6: Staying in a hotel, hotel rooms, irregular verbs in the future tense, & using direct and indirect objects in a sentence. Review chapter 6. QUIZ: Hotel Vocabulary words & verbs. TEST: Chapter 6. Chapter 7: inside an airplane, at the airport, geographic terminology, and conditional of regular & irregular verbs. QUIZ: Vocabulary words. Week 21-24 Chapter 7: Changing le, les to se before direct object pronoun. Review chapter 7. TEST: Chapter 7. Chapter 8: Parts of the body, minor medical problems, emergency room, in the hospital, present perfect, irregular participle, and comparison of like things. QUIZ: Vocabulary words & verbs. TEST: Chapter 8. Chapter 9: The city, transportation in the city, the country, farm animals, imperfect progressive, & placement of direct and indirect object pronouns. QUIZ: Vocabulary words. Week 25-27 Chapter 9: adjectives and demonstrative pronouns, & review chapter 9. TEST: Chapter 9. Chapter 10: the kitchen, cooking, types of food, using a recipe, and formal & informal commands. QUIZ: Vocabulary words. 1 Week STAAR TESTING Week 28-31 Chapter 10: Placement of direct object pronouns with a command. Review chapter 10. TEST: Chapter 10. 1 Week STAAR TESTING Week 32-34 Chapter 11: Cars, gas stations, driving on the highway, and driving in the city. QUIZ: Vocabulary words. 2 Weeks STAAR TESTING Week 35-37 Chapter 11: regular & irregular tu commands and negative tu commands. Wrap up the second semester.
