For you will spread out to the right and the left.” Women’s Ministries International A ministry of the Free Methodist Church of North America WMI inspires, equips, and affirms women as they grow in Christ, reaching out to others in their neighborhood and globally. “What do you want for Women's Ministries International?” I wrote as fast as I could, sensing a gentle and reassuring whisper, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon you.” All around the world, WMI is flourishing. Women, just like you, are at the forefront, organizing, supporting each other, reaching the lost for Jesus and working together with their counterparts in the United States to raise awareness of their plight and walk beside them. In the U. S., WMI has raised over $175,000 this quadrennial, several new organizations have begun and a new generation of women are being inspired to join this incredible work. While attending a women’s conference in St. Louis, I was inspired as I heard women leaders who have a passion for Christ and a global vision. They had a word from God… for me and I believe, for Women’s Ministries International. God wants to break down barriers and unite women across our nation and around the world to see His Kingdom come, His will be done! Joshua 1:9 is still His Word for us today! “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." God is working miracles as WMI goes forward, as we are obedient to His Voice, and as we are surrendered to fulfill His plan and His purpose. WMI is committed to refocusing on our theme, “Reaching women to change our world,” to multiplying our efforts to raise awareness and funds for international endeavors; to be co-workers with pastors, superintendents and leaders; to empower women for godly service around the world; to unite women in support of each other, to bring the Good News to the poor, to comfort the broken hearted, to evangelize so that prisoners of sin go free, to work for social justice for women and children; to see literal slaves released and equipped for service and to partner with other organizations to see God’s eternal will and purpose accomplished. Will you join me in making some commitments for the coming days? 1) I commit to helping the hopeless, rethink the value of a person’s life and love without expectations of return. 2) I will advocate for social justice, fight for the rights of the oppressed and be an advocate for change in an unjust world. 3) I will express the love of Christ, letting others know of the hope there is in Christ, of His friendship and protective covering that gives stability each day. 4) I will remind others of their value; many women have little value in their own eyes and even in the eyes of others. Unless they are reminded of their value, they feel unwanted and worthless. Jesus values them so much He died for their sins and we have the opportunity to remind them of their value. i 5) I will show honor and treat others with respect; I will not label them or mark them as being somehow less human or less deserving of respect because of sin in their life or because their lifestyle doesn’t meet my standards. I will freely give my love and respect to others whether or not I think they deserve it. Jesus loved me when I was dirty with sin. 6) I will be generous with the resources God has given to me; assisting the poor and orphans, thinking of other’s needs rather than myself. 7) I will use my words and influence to refresh people’s lives and refuse to speak negative words. I will smile and encourage my sisters. 8) I will have integrity and lead by example; Job said in 29:7, “everything I did was honest; righteousness covered me like a robe.” This, I want to be my testimony too. 9) I will live a Christ centered life and keep an humble attitude, knowing that I like Paul am chief of sinners, saved by grace through faith. 10) I will keep eternity in view, knowing that I will give account to the Lord for the life he has loaned me. My days are numbered and only He knows when my time is complete, I will live treasuring every day as a blessing from my heavenly father. These are my commitments, will you make them your commitments too?! If we make a mark for Christ, we must be fully surrendered to Him. Will you please bow your head and pray? “Lord, we commit to you today, fresh and new. We have tasted and know that the Lord is good. Give each of us much fruit as we seek to honor You. Unite us to do the impossible through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Help us resist the enemy of our souls, that you might do all you want to do in and through each of us. In Jesus powerful Name, Amen.” Thank you for your prayers, your hard work and sacrifice as you and I together strive to do God’s will in His great Harvest field! There’s a work for us to do so let’s make a difference! Let’s show the world that Jesus Christ is alive today! We will be united in Christ! We WILL love our sisters…and our brothers! It is our privilege to serve Christ together for His Kingdom’s sake, as WMI women! Free Methodist women have a long history of serving others through our church and we don’t want our generation to drop the spiritual mantle and not pass it on to our younger women because we were too busy or disinterested. We have prepared a practical, informative program book to help us enlarge our faith and put our trust in Him to do more through our local churches. We have invited pastors and others in the church to come along side of us, and to reach out to bring us together to work as a well-oiled machine to see what the Lord can do through us all working together. It all starts with the question, “are our hearts and souls in the right place to be ready to do what the Father has in store for us to do and then hang on tight when we give him the lead?” Prayer is the most important element in this year’s study, and when we prepare with prayer and not in our own strength, we have vast promises for success. We are studying three countries this year, Egypt, Iraq, and Jordon. This is a good time to check with the Missions Department to get more information about workers there and put them on your prayer list and financially support them at this most important time in history. When I was in these countries last, the doors were open but now they are closing in some places so the work that we do is vital and necessary before they close completely again. Check out the WMI website and keep informed of the new strategies that are constantly changing, come on a ministry trip to a foreign country with us and help us encourage women around the world that they are important to God’s plan for us to reach the world for Christ. You can make a difference if you get involved; we need each one of you!!! Plan for someone to be a greeter at the door and have light refreshments. Quote from the “Earnest Christian” by our founding father, B.T. Roberts “Are you at peace among yourselves? Have you put away all bitterness, and wrath and evil speaking? Have you reconciled with your neighbor? Go not into a special effort with a feud unhealed, if you can heal it. Have you arranged your temporal business that your good shall not be evil spoken of or your influence crippled, if not destroyed by unfriendly reports? Have you paid your liabilities and met your engagements? It is useless for anyone careless in meeting their obligations to expect to wield much religious influence. Have you put away sin from your own heart and your own dwelling? Can you appeal to Heaven and cry, “Search us, O God, and try us and see if there is any evil way in us? If so, then you may hope that God’s blessing any attend your efforts and begin.” “Small is the gate and narrow is the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:14 NIV DECORATIONS: This year’s theme is based around the Middle East. This will be the day I give my LORD to fast and pray and I myself deny. For there are so many needs on our mission fields, and other needs close by. I will take time to read the Word and my missions e-mail too. I wonder if missionaries ever get tired, they have so much to do. And then I think, they give so much, their lives they give and all. -4- The things I do don’t seem to count; my service looks so small. Oh, Africa, a continent so large, with so many people lost in sin, (continues) You’re filled with souls for whom Christ died, won’t you let Him in? Oh Egypt, with needs so great, political, stressful, hungry, and ill; But your greatest need is for my LORD who died on Calvary’s hill. Oh Middle East, Jordan, Iraq and Iran too, I long to give you the word that Christ has died for you. Here I am on the other side of the world so far away; But not so far removed from God, for I can fast and pray. No, I can’t be there or on any foreign shore, But I will be diligent in my corner here to fast and pray as never before. I may not set the world on fire, but my prayer lamp is trimmed and bright. We can trust him to go before us, be with us, and to be our back up at all times. “This is what the LORD says to his anointed, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their armor, to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down the gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.” Isaiah 45: 1-3 HIS PROMISES ARE TRUE!! FASTING FOR JESUS BIRTHDAY!!! -9- Will the Christ Child Come? One Christmas we had an interesting experience that I would like to share. Halfway through December we were doing the regular evening things when there was a knock at the door. We opened it to find a small package with a beautiful ceramic lamb inside. We looked at the calendar and realized that the 12 days of Christmas were beginning! We waited excitedly for the next night's surprise and only then, with the gift of a matching shepherd, did we realize that the lamb was part of a nativity set. Each night we grew more excited to see what piece we would receive. Each was exquisitely beautiful. The kids kept trying to catch the givers as we slowly built the scene at the manger and began to focus on Christ's birth. On Christmas Eve, all the pieces were in place, all but the Baby Jesus. My 12-year-old son really wanted to catch our benefactors and began to devise all kinds of ways to trap them. He ate dinner in the mini-van, watching and waiting, but no one came. Finally, we called him in to go through our family's Christmas Eve traditions. But before the kids went to bed, we checked the front step - no Baby Jesus! We began to worry that my son had scared them off. My husband suggested that maybe they dropped the Jesus and there wouldn't be anything coming. Somehow, something was missing that Christmas Eve. There was a feeling that things weren't complete. The kids went to bed and before I went to bed, I again checked to see if the Jesus had come - - no, the doorstep was empty. In our family, the kids can open their stockings when they want to, but they have to wait to open any presents until Dad wakes up. So one by one they woke up very early and I also woke up to watch them. Even before they opened their stockings, each child checked to see if perhaps during the night the Baby Jesus had come. Missing that piece of the set seemed to have an odd effect. At least it changes my focus. I knew there were presents under the tree for me and I was excited to watch the children open their gifts, but first on my mind was the feeling of waiting for the ceramic Christ Child. We had opened just about all of the presents when one of the children found one more for me buried deep beneath the limbs of the tree. He handed me a small package from my former visiting teaching companion. This sister was somewhat less-active in the church. I had been her visiting teacher for a couple of years and then, when she was asked to be a visiting teacher, she requested to go with me. I had learned over time they didn't have much for Christmas, so that their focus was on the children. It sounded like she didn't get many gifts to open, so I had always given her a small package - new dish towels, the next year's Relief Society lesson manual -- not much, but something for her to open. I was touched when at church on the day before Christmas, she had given me this small package, saying it was just a token of her love and appreciation. As I took off the bow, I remembered my friendship with her and was filled with gratitude for knowing her and for her kindness and sacrifice in this giving me a gift. But as the paper fell away, I began to tremble and cry. There in the small brown box was the Baby Jesus! He had come! I realized on that Christmas Day, that Christ will come into our lives in ways that we don't expect. The spirit of Christ comes into our hearts as we serve one another. We had waited and watched for Him to come, expecting the dramatic "knock at the door and scurrying of feet" but He came in a small, simple package that represented service, friendship, gratitude and love. This experience taught me that the beginning of the true spirit of Christmas comes as we open our hearts and actively focus on the Savior. But we will most likely find Him in the small and simple acts of love, friendship and service that we give to each other. This Christmas I want to feel again the joy of knowing that Christ is in our home. I want to focus on loving and serving. More than that, I want to open my heart to Him all year that I may see Him again. "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." Matthew 1:21 NIV May the spirit of Christ be with you and yours this Christmas and always! -10- THE CHRISTMAS BELL I KNOW WHO I AM I am God's child (John 1:12) I am Christ's friend (John 15:15) I am united with the Lord (1 Cor. 6:17) I am a saint set apart for God (Eph. 1:1) I am bought with a price (1 Cor. 6:19-20) I am a personal witness of Christ (Acts 1:8) I am the salt & light of the earth (Matt. 5:13-14) I am free forever from condemnation (Rom. 8:1-2) I am a member of the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:27) I am a citizen of Heaven; I am significant (Phil. 3:20) I am free from any charge against me (Rom. 8:31-34) I am a minister of reconciliation for God (2 Cor.5:17-21) I have access to God through the Holy Spirit (Eph. 2:18) I am seated with Christ in the heavenly realms (Eph. 2:6) I am established, anointed, sealed by God (2 Cor.1:21-22) I cannot be separated from the love of God (Rom. 8:35-39) I am assured all things work together for good (Rom. 8: 28) I have been chosen and appointed to bear fruit (John 15:16) I may approach God with freedom and confidence (Eph. 3: 12) I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil. 4:13) I am the branch of the true vine, a channel of His life (John 15: 1-5) I am God's temple (1 Cor. 3: 16); I am complete in Christ (Col. 2: 10) I am hidden with Christ in God (Col. 3:3); I have been justified (Romans 5:1) I am God's co-worker (1 Cor. 3:9; 2 Cor. 6:1); I am God's workmanship (Eph. 2:10) I am confident that the good works God has begun in me will be perfected (Phil. 1:5) I have been redeemed and forgiven (Col. 1:14) I have been adopted as God's child (Eph. 1) A Wonderful New Christmas Song – We should learn to sing it loud and clearhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWrrvQ_3-40&feature=colike -11- January:Hold Onto Your Service To God FOCUS: Help our people to become more aware of our foreign missions. To relieve the stress and give time for ideas to gel. Have a planning committee composed of men and women in the church who have a heart for missions. Add people as you go along. Divide up the responsibilities. Share the fun. Many like to help in some way and will work year after year if not overburdened. Find out what people like to do. Keep record of what has worked successfully but don’t do exactly the same thing every year. Try new ideas but not all at once. Thank those who help. Good publicity is important. Plan something for all ages in the church to take part in. Send good information ahead to your missionary speakers. Meet monthly as a planning team. It keeps people on task. Report monthly to your Church Mission Team. Work with them. #2 Idea - “Around the World in 60 Minutes” Set up tables in the middle of the room. On those tables put various foods and drink items from the different countries that we are studying this year (Egypt, Iraq and Jordan). Label all the items with the country they are from and an information flyer of the missionaries that are there, with their prayer requests. (Check with missions headquarters or hotline) Put together booklets with all of the information including the recipe. This is a wonderful way to promote missions and give our people important information we cannot promote in a public way. Set up chairs without tables to help with mingling, not lingering, for 60 minutes. Invite both men and women and offer child care. Hillsdale, Michigan FMC - Use some recipes that you find or use those in this book. SCRIPTURE: “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” ~ I Peter 4:10 NIV “If you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today- to love the Lord your God and serve him with all your heart and all your soul, then I will send rain on your land in its season.” Deuteronomy 11:13-14a NIV SONGS: I Will Serve Him Take My Life We Bring the Sacrifice of Praise in Christ Alone Refreshments: If Idea#2 is not used, serve Roasted Red Pepper Hummus/Fava Bean Salad/Borani/Egyptian Fig & Date Bread/Iraqi Cardamom Cookies/Coconut Squares -15- February: TouchOf God On Your Heart FOCUS: God loves us and He can touch us at the point of our need as we continue to serve Him. We can enjoy ourselves and still serve others, especially through prayer. Anyone can pray at anytime and anywhere, making a difference in the world BE A PRAYER WARRIOR “I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.” Jeremiah 24:7 NIV “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalms 90:12 NIV PREPARATION: Pray, Pray, Pray! Pray, Plan, Implement: Ask everyone to bring a large, older microwave safe mug to use. Have a few on hand for those who forget. Plan to take an offering for your working fund if needed. Showing love to one another is a good thing; we need to lift up everyone in our church and make them feel loved and cared for in a specific way, so this month we are encouraging you to do this. Everyone needs to feel loved and, this month, there are many that don’t have someone to give them flowers or candy or just say I LOVE YOU! Be intentional and invite all the women in your congregation to a spa night. Advertise that women should come in very casual clothing (sweats) and flip flops. One goal of the evening is to memorize two verses: Jeremiah 24:7 (NIV) says “I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.” Psalms 90:12 (NIV) says ”Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Print the above verses on pink sheets of paper for each person to take home (after you have read the verses together, encourage the women to post them on a mirror there to see and memorize daily). -16- PROGRAM: As ladies arrive, hand out this Ice Breaker and have them mingle to get comfortable. Spend this time serving one another with food and treatments. For your spa treatments, go online and search “Free homemade spa treatment recipes” and choose the ones that you would like to use and print them for your ladies. With the spa items, have pictures of our area of study this year so everyone is fully aware. These can be found in the missions section of this book. Encourage them to pray for our work and missionaries in the Middle East whenever they remember what an enjoyable time they had at this spa. Pray for the missionary’s safety because they are willing to give everything for another soul to meet our Lord. Prayer lets us serve with them. PRAYER: Gather everyone back together for a prayer of thankfulness that God loves us…which is really all we need. -17- March: HoldOntoThe Promises Of God FOCUS: The Bible is the most important book for all Christians. We cannot function in our spiritual walk with the Lord without it. In times of great joy, we find passages to express our praise to Him. In times when we are discouraged, we find scripture to encourage us. When we are searching for answers we look to God’s Word. Each time we find his promises, we test them and find they are true; when we hold up our end, he is faithful. Someone has said, there are some thirty-seven thousand promises in the Word of God. The Bible is our source book, our comfort, our strength, and our guide. Invite everyone to bring their Bible this month and search the scriptures together, basking in His promises. “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope that we profess, for He who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23 PROGRAM: Search the Promises Salvation: NEED “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” Romans 1:18-21 NIV Salvation: PROVISION “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world, through Him, might be saved.” John 3:17 NKJV Salvation: FAITH “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8 NKJV Salvation: REPENTANCE “And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2:21 NKJV Salvation: CONFESSION “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9 NKJV Salvation : ACCEPTANCE “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” Romans 10:11 NKJV -18- Salvation: JUSTIFICATION “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Hebrews10-17 NKJV Salvation – RIGHTEOUSNESS “As obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written,” Be holy, for I am holy.” I Peter 1:14-16 NKJV Promises to Consider “We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 “If anyone loves God, this one is known by Him.” I Corinthians 8:3 “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35 “Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1 “The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.” Psalm 9:9 “The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness; you will sustain him on his sickbed.” Psalm 41:3 “God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying; and there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4 “The Lord, He is the one who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be afraid.” Deuteronomy 31:8 “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God." Hebrews 4:9 “You will show me the path of life; in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11 Getting into the word together helps us feel closer to each other and to God and we want to honor and know him more. This month can be a great time to focus on getting into better shape. Plan an exercise or movement night. Do chair excercises for the less active and Zumba for the active women. Plan a small health fair: blood pressure, self breast exams, etc. You can go online and search “organizing health fair for women” and find many ideas for good healthy living options. Ask a nurse or doctor to address your women with ideas for good healthy living. Go to a walking area and walk together; have a great time of fellowship with the women of your church. Have someone ready to push someone that may come in a wheelchair. Have bottles of water readily available. End up back at the church for a meatless nourishing time together focusing on our area of missions study this year. SHORT STORY TO SHARE: KOSHARY is a traditional Egyptian meal that consists of a strange combination of macaroni, spaghetti, rice, lentils, chick peas, garlic sauce and spicy tomato chili sauce, all topped with fried onions. It is sold from carts by street venders, in restaurants and in homes for different taste experiences. The Koshary man stands in front of the containers that hold the various ingredients and speed is his goal. As the Koshary man scoops, he knocks his metal spoon against the sides of the bowls, making the Koshary symphony that you won’t hear elsewhere. When he is filling an order for more than four it sounds like a rehearsal for a concert. Koshary is considered a meal that is inexpensive yet fills the stomach of an average Egyptian and they love it for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack. It is both affordable and delicious. PRAYER: Have a time of prayer and know that you have had a great experience with the women of your fellowship. Pray for our workers in the Middle East, for their safety, finances, and any stresses that they are experiencing at this time. REFRESHMENTS: Egyptian Koshary Pasta/ Ice Water (Recipe area) -20- May: Annointed With Gladness FOCUS: Encourage each one to show the joy of the Lord at all times. Sing songs of joy to honor our Father. ”You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of joy.” Psalms 45:7 NIV SONGS: How Great is Our God Lord We Lift Your Name on High Great Is Thy Faithfulness Majesty Breathe You Are PREPARATION: We don’t sing together enough, have a time of praising Him in song. Invite young women and teens to join you for a time of inspiration, ask different ones to share a duet, trio, or any talent that they could share. Ask each one to bring a plant to exchange. Have someone share a joyful testimony. Prepare style show,( see below.) Have many involved!!! DECORATIONS: Use the plants that ladies have brought and put in the middle of the tables. Spring pastel colors can be in napkins, clothes and plates. Use festive and happy colors. PRAYER: Pray for our mothers and missionaries in the countries that we are studying this year. PROGRAM: Sing together songs of joy, they can be a large variety and have the special music shared at this time. Have someone read the following aloud: Women need to laugh often, as laughter can be contagious. We all need to be able to laugh at ourselves. If there is not much laughter, something is missing in the area of joy. Christians should be the happiest people on earth, regardless of our circumstances. William Barclay said, “We are chosen for joy, however hard the Christian way, it is, both in the traveling and in the goal, the way of joy. A gloomy Christian is a contradiction in terms.” If you are lacking laughter in your life, you are losing out on more than you realize. Sometimes it can mean that you need to laugh at the same thing that caused you to get upset or angry. Others want to be around happy, joy filled people that is just natural. -21- Laughing women teach children that it is alright to laugh, even at yourself, to feel joy is a great lesson to pass along to another. Let’s get people laughing, including ourselves. “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10 NIV “Hallelujah! For the Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory!” Revelation 19:6b-7a NIV “I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will have hope.” Acts 2:2526 NIV STYLE SHOW: MC introduces each outfit and model, saying ”If you have been shopping lately, you have likely noticed that today’s styles just can’t compete with those we knew when we were younger women of fashion. Our fashion show today is going to feature the popular styles of the past that were practical and sensible, as well as fashionable”. 1. We will begin our trip down memory lane by featuring the familiar “sack dress” with the “one size fits all” convenience, while still achieving great style. 2.The sack dress is often accompanied by the popular necklace, a colorful choker. Month of Missions (MOM) is an avenue to help promote giving to missions. Give the people in your church the opportunity to honor special women in their lives and donate to Free Methodist missions at the same time. Distribute the following form for those who wish to make a donation in honor of an important woman in their lives. Suggestions: Decorate a bulletin board at church with tea cups with names of those being honored. Send thank you notes to those who gave. Send a note to the women who had a donation made in her honor, letting her know about the donation. Money should be labeled “MOM offering” and sent to: Women’s Ministries International Attention: Jane Perry 770 N. The principle use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons required less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surpprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes. REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pie on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. The government would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don’t think I ever caught anything from an apron, but love... -25- June: Touch Of God On Your Soul FOCUS: The number one priority for Christians after loving the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind should be reaching the world for Him. Seeing souls saved is a priority for those doing the Lord’s will in their lives. “There is more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” Luke 15:7 PREPARATION: Pray, Pray, Pray! Call on the prayer warriors in your church or group to begin a month long time of calling on the Lord for his mercy and the salvation of many souls at home and in the Middle East. We can shake the ground with our sincere prayers on their behalf and see our prayers answered if we call on the Lord to move and show himself to people in dreams, observing God at work in others, reading scripture or any way he chooses. Pray for our workers in the dangerous parts of the world where they are literally laying down their lives for others. When we begin caring about others and are willing to sacrifice, we will grow too. Put an insert in your church bulletin asking for prayer requests you can pray for this month in WMI. Invite any that want to come and pray with you. PROGRAM: Meet in a place where it is easy to be in an attitude of prayer. It can be in your sanctuary, in the great outdoors, or even in the home of one of your prayer warriors, etc. Have an Ice Breaker to help people feel comfortable, perhaps asking: What is important in your life right now? Or If you could perform miracles, what would you do? Or If you could change the world what would you do? Have a time of coming together singing: Lord, We Lift Your Name on High Through It All Lord,We Lift Your Name on High Oh, How He Loves You and Me Power of Your Love You Are Good Great is Thy Faithfulness Because He Lives Ask ladies to read these NIV scripture verses and distribute before the meeting starts. -26- ×----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------× “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Remember to include men as you plan. -28- August: Touch Of God On Your World FOCUS: The invitation to all: We have had a year of learning how to hold on to God, learning to touch God and accepting God's anointing on our lives. Now in August finishing the year and anticipating next year we need to sit back and just drink in the fragrance of God and bask in His presence. The flowers are in full bloom everywhere, their sweet aroma cannot compare to the scent of the gift that he gave to us when he died for us on the cross. “Thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.” II Corinthians 2:14 NIV PREPARATION: Pray, Pray, Pray. As you know prayer has been the main ingredient in all of our preparation this year and if we have been faithful, our Father has also been faithful to answer. Send out this focus invitation to all to come together and thank our heavenly Father for his answers to our requests and just come together to soak in his sweet aroma. DECORATIONS: The first thing is to have the committee meet early enough to walk around the room and fill it with the most important thing, the beautiful fragrance of prayer. Then fill the room with sweet aromas, floral spray, fragrant candles, flowers, baking cookies, anything that will fill the room with an odor that is pleasing when people walk into the room. Possibly, have each woman bring her favorite perfume along and have porous pieces of paper and have them write the name of the perfume on it then give a good spray on the paper so others can smell it and know the name. Any smells that bring us pleasure. SONGS: Great Is Your Faithfulness Lord, I Lift Your Name On High Oh, How He Loves You and Me A Mighty Fortress Who Am I Power of Your Love Because He Lives You Are I Love You, Lord Through It All Majesty I’d Rather Have Jesus DEVOTIONAL: Scripture: Have someone read #1 “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice of God.” Ephesians 5:1-2NIV -29- The Hebrew word for perfume is Qetoreth, it also means incense and “sweet smoke of sacrifice.” In the Old Testament scripture tells us that when the priests took the flesh or the blood from a sacrifice of an animal into the temple, that the odors of that burnt offering were pleasing to God. In the Old Testament, the old covenant that the Lord had given to his people gives great detail of how to make incense for worship. Scripture: Have someone read #2 “Take fragrant spices – gum resin, onycha, galbanum, and pure frankincense – all in equal amounts, and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred. Grind some of it into powder and place it in front of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy to the Lord. Whoever makes any like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off from his people.” Exodus 30:34-38NIV Gum resin comes from plants, onycha from the sea, galbanum from the soil, and frankincense from the boswillia trees. The fragrant blend of incense was the sweet smoke of a sacrifice, meaning they were obeying God’s command. Scripture: Have someone read #3 “May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of hands be like the evening sacrifice.” Psalm 141:2 NIV Our prayers today are like the incense that was burned continually on the altar by the Israelites, offered up as a pleasing aroma to God, and signifies that we are obeying God’s commands. Scripture: Have someone read #4 “Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel’s hand.” Revelation 8:3-4 NIV “Four living creatures and twenty four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls of incense, which were the prayers of the saints.” Revelation 5:8b NIV Do you see that our prayers are the sweet smell, the incense, the fragrance that goes up to our God? Our prayers should be offered to him in reverence; they should be pure and come from a pure heart that belongs only to him and a longing to follow him and his teachings. We should bring the sacrifice of praise when we worship him in all of his beauty. Our prayers are fragrant incense to our Lord and we glorify Jesus Christ in our offering. We all have an aroma that follows us and the Bible is very clear that we should have the aroma of Christ. There should be no doubt about where our loyalty lies. Remember the story of Gomer and Hosea? How God’s love parallels Hosea’s love for Gomer even in her wayward actions? Hosea chapters 6-7 describe Gods frustration at having tried various ways to reach the people of Israel to awaken them to their peril just as Hosea had gone out to bring Gomer back home even in her drunken state. -30- The Scripture says that God said that the Israelites were “like a cake not turned, underdeveloped on one side and burned on the other.” Just think of that burnt stench that God talks about --- not very pleasing. He goes on to lament throughout the book but in the last chapter, a divine promise is revealed. Scripture: Have someone read #5 “I will heal their waywardness and love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them. I will be like the dew of Israel; he will blossom like a lily. Like a cedar of Lebanon he will send down his roots; his young shoots will grow. His splendor will be like an olive tree, his fragrance like the cedar of Lebanon. Men will dwell again in his shade. He will flourish like grain.” Hosea 14:4-7a God will love them freely. GOD WILL LOVE US FREELY, what a promise! Scripture: Leader/ Read Yourself “Thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him; for we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.” II Corinthians 2:14-15 NIV Believers are a fragrance of the victory of Christ to the world. For those needing to be saved, the gospel that we take or send to them is like perfume, attracting them to our Christ, leading them to eternal life with the Father, like bees to a sweet smelling flower. Our job is to be faithful to what he calls us to do – to live for him and follow his lead. If you tell someone what God has done for you personally, you can say that you have watered and the harvest is in God’s timing. Oswald Chambers’ words about prayer: “Prayer does not fit us for the greater works; prayer is the greater work.” Pass fragrant lighted candles around while someone reads: Be a fragrant aroma for God, live your life for your Lord and Savior on a daily basis and be proud that you are putting off a beautiful aroma just as these candles do. Remember that believers are the fragrance of Christ’s victory over sin for the entire world. Godly living and sharing the gospel are perfume to God’s nostrils. Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me! GOD, HELP US TO BE THE FRAGRANCE THAT YOU WANT US TO BE! PRAYER: Pray for your aroma, pray for the missionaries that were in our field of study this year, pray for Women’s Ministries International to reach more women around the world next year. Pray for your September kick off, pray that our Special Projects financial needs will be met. Thank God for his bountiful blessings.
