Welcome to Junior Bible 2011-2012. Name: ________________________ Instructor: Mr. Tinkham Course Objective: This course teaches the specific content of two very significant biblical books (the Psalter and Romans), and uses the text to explore theological themes, draw implications for public worship and private devotion, and encourage life change through student application. Course Outline: The course is divided by semester. First we will consider the book of Psalms. In the second semester we will study the book of Romans. Course elements include: I. Reading. Our 1st semester text is How to Read the Psalms by Tremper Longman III. Our 2nd semester texts are Commentary on Romans and The Doctrines that Divide. Of course you will be reading Scripture as well. II. Journals. Accompanying each reading assignment will be a journal assignment, which will require you to take notes from the book, answer questions, and complete tasks. Journal grading will be based on how extensive and complete your answers are (satisfactory journal work yields full credit). You will need to know all of the journal material for your tests. Journal answers must be your own work- copying another student’s journal, in whole or in part, is cheating. Journals will be due on Mondays. III. Student Presentations. After our formal study of the Psalms is complete, each student will be required to present a psalm interpretation to the class as a lesson. Details TBA. IV. Bible Memory. You will be memorizing Psalm 139 in the 1st semester and Romans 8 in the 2nd semester. See attached schedule. Memory Quizzes are on Wednesdays. At least 50% of the value of each quiz will come from new verses, but you will be tested on review verses as well. You will take a final covering all of each chapter at the end of each respective semester. V. Tests. Each semester will include tests covering reading, journal answers, lectures, and discussion. Texts: The Holy Bible, NIV. You will need to bring your Bibles to class. Longman, Tremper III. How to Read the Psalms Luther, Martin. Commentary on Romans Lutzer, Erwin.
