ADDITIONAL NOTES
EVIDENCE FOR TIER 4 APPLICATIONS
Once you have completed your application form, the ONLINE system will generate a list of documents
it is expecting you to submit with your application.
A. MAINTENANCE
How much money do I need to show in my bank account?
You are required to show enough funds to cover both fees and maintenance:Funds required
Fees
for current academic year
(if you have paid all your fees then you do not need to show this. If you have paid
a portion of your fees, then you must have enough in your bank account to cover
any outstanding fees)
Maintenance £1015 for each remaining month of your course (up to a maximum of 9 months
= £9135)
If you are not sure how much money you should be saving, please contact
International Student Support as soon as possible
We strongly advise you keep the money in the bank account until a decision on your visa is made.
Bank statements
Please note that original bank statements are required by UKVI and you should request these at least one
week in advance of submitting your form to International Student Support. If you cannot obtain original
statements in time, then you MUST ensure your bank statements meet the following requirements:
The required money has been maintained for a consecutive 28 day period (finishing on the date of the closing
balance) ending no more than 31 days before the date of your application submission.
Your bank or building society statements must show ALL the following:
 your name or your parent(s)/legal guardian’s name; and
 the account number; and
 the date of the statement; and
 the financial institution’s name and logo; and
 the amount of money available.
If you wish to submit electronic bank statements from an online account these must contain all of the
details listed above. In addition, you will need to provide a supporting letter from your bank, on company
headed paper, confirming the authenticity of the statements provided OR an electronic bank statement
bearing the official stamp of the bank in question will be accepted. This stamp must appear on every page
of the statement. The UKVI will not accept statements which show the balance in the account on a particular
day as these documents do not show that the required funds have been maintained for the full period needed.
If you wish to use a joint account as proof of your money, you must be named on the account along with
one or more other person.
Letter from bank
If you are unable to obtain bank statements in time for your visa application, your bank may be willing to issue
a letter confirming the required funds have been maintained in your account for a consecutive 28 day
1
ISS version 12/2015
period. If this is the case, please refer to the Tier 4 Policy Guidance and in particular to the section 198 iii.
on page 49:
Letter from your bank confirming funds have been held for a consecutive 28 day period ending no
more than 31 days before the date of your application. Your letter from a bank or building society must
show:
• your name or your parents(s)/legal guardians name; and
• the account number; and
• the date of the letter; and
• the financial institution’s name and logo; and
• the money in your account; and
• that there is enough money in the account (to cover your course fees and living costs).
Using overseas accounts
It is safer to use UK bank statements because the format is familiar to the UKVI, however the UKVI do allow
you to use your overseas account or a combination of bank accounts. Please speak to International Student
Support if unsure, or email iss@qub.ac.uk. Chinese deposit accounts are the most risky form of financial
evidence; they are sometimes considered to be a ‘bond’ so please show this to us as soon as possible so
we can check it is suitable.
If overseas bank accounts are used, a foreign currency conversion must be printed from www.oanda.com
and submitted with your application (you should use the conversion according to the date of the closing
balance). Statements must be in English, or officially translated.
Using your parents’ bank statements
If you are planning to submit your parents’ bank statements as evidence of funds, then it is very important
that you include the following; otherwise your application will not be accepted by UKVI:
1. Proof that you are related to your parents:
 your birth certificate showing your name and the names of your parent(s); or
 your certificate of adoption showing your name and the names of both of your parent(s) or legal
guardian; or
 a Court document naming the legal guardian of the student
The document used must be the original legal document or a notarised copy.
2.
Evidence that your parent(s)/legal guardian has given their permission for you to use their money.
You must provide a letter from your parent(s) or legal guardian. The letter must confirm:
 the relationship between you and your parent(s) or legal guardian; and
 that your parent(s) or legal guardian have given their consent to you using their funds to study in
the UK
 That your parent(s) consent to your visa application
3.
The bank statements must be the originals (copies are not accepted by UKVI). The statements
must meet all the requirements as noted above.
B. QUALIFICATIONS
If required you must include with your application any evidence of qualifications (certificates/transcripts) on
which your offer of a course is based. These must match exactly the qualifications that are stated on your
CAS. If these qualifications are not in English, then you must ensure you have obtained official certified
translations. More guidance on the translation requirements are included in Section F on page 12.
If you are continuing on the same course and your offer is based on your progress to date you will have been
assessed by the Tier 4 sponsor by other means and will not be required to provide these.

C. OFFICIAL SPONSORSHIP
If you are receiving official sponsorship, you must enclose an official, original letter from your sponsor unless
you are a low-risk national (for further information about low-risk nationals, please see Section F).
The Tier 4 Policy Guidance para 189-190 states:
‘Your sponsor can include details of the Official Financial Sponsorship that they are giving to you on your
CAS. No further documents are needed to show this Official Financial Sponsorship. If you do not know if your
Tier 4 sponsor has included this information, you will need to check this with them.
In all other circumstances if you are being given Official Financial Sponsorship, you must provide a letter of
confirmation from your Official Financial Sponsor on official letter-headed paper or stationery of the
organisation of the official financial sponsor which must have the official stamp of that organisation on it.
The letter must show:
• your name;
• the name and contact details of your official financial sponsor;
• the date of the letter;
• the length of your sponsorship; and
• the amount of money the sponsor is giving to you or a statement that your official financial sponsor will
cover all of your fees and living costs.’
D. PHOTOGRAPHS
Please ensure you have two recent photographs that meet Home Office requirements. You must not have
used these photographs with any previous passport/visa/police registration application. Please write your
name on the back of both photographs.
E. LOW-RISK NATIONALITIES AND DIFFERENTIATION ARRANGEMENTS
Tier 4 Policy Guidance – Paragraph 12 pg13 states: ‘If you qualify for our differentiation arrangements you
will normally be required to provide fewer evidential documents. If you are exempted from having to provide
a document - or a group of documents - under our differentiation arrangements, this will be specifically stated
in this guidance. We may request these or other documents from you.’
The Home Office will refuse any application where a request is made for the supporting documents
to be submitted, if the specified documents are not provided to us within the period specified in that
request.’

Please note, even if you are from a low-risk nationality, we require you to submit your documents to ISS, as
UKVI have the right to request these documents. We will retain them on file until your visa has been granted.
F. TRANSLATION REQUIREMENTS
If any documents are not in English the original must be accompanied by a fully certified translation
by a professional translator/translation company. This translation must include:
 details of the translator/translation company’s credentials; and
 confirmation that it is an accurate translation of the original document; and
 the translator/translation company’s contact details.
It must also be dated and include the original signature of the translator or an authorised official of the
translation company.
G. IMMIGRATION HEALTH SURCHARGE
From April 6th 2015, all Tier 4 students who are applying to extend their visa from within the UK are
required to pay a surcharge towards the NHS. This must be paid as part of your visa application and
is charged at £150 per year. If you are extending your visa for a period of time less than 6 months it
will cost £75.
If the total length of your course is longer than 1 year, UK Visas & Immigration automatically grant you 4
months further immigration permission. For example, if you are extending for a further 4 months to submit
your thesis for your PhD, your visa will be granted for a total of 8 months therefore you will need to ensure
that you pay £150, as the full cost of the surcharge for 1 year.
Please note that this money must be available in addition to any maintenance you are required to
show evidence of.
You can calculate the amount you will need to pay on the UKVI website here - https://www.immigrationhealth-surcharge.service.gov.uk/checker/type. If you have any queries regarding the amount of money you
will need to pay, please contact us at iss@qub.ac.uk or come in to meet with us.
