Works Cited Page

• You will need your cheat sheet out. If you don’t have it done, you will complete it

BEFORE I let you on a computer. 

Today…

In a few minutes, you will go get on your computer.

 You will open this very pp from the assign drive.

 You will follow the instructions IN ORDER to make your Works Cited page.

 You will need this for tomorrow. IT MUST

GET DONE!!!!!!! It is a grade!!!!!

BTW…if you don’t have a date or page number put n.d. (no date) or n.p. (no page #)

But first,

You need to collect up your citation information and put it in MLA format. In other words, you need ALL four articles. I will NOT take your works cited page without 4 sources!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look at your worksheet to see how the order goes.

Go ahead and fill in your worksheet right now.

A note about dates: format them like this:

 29 Oct. 2012

(Day first, then the first 3 letters of the month capitalized with a period after them, then the year last.)

(I know, it’s weird. I don’t come up with these things.)

When you are finished with your worksheet, show it to me and I will let you on the computer.

If you don’t have the necessary information, you will need to find your article on the database and get it. I told you that following directions would make your life easier. 

Overview:

 Your Works Cited page is where you will list all the sources you used in your research project.

Warning: if you don’t follow all these instructions IN ORDER, your WC page will be wrong, and I will not take it.

Materials:

 Open a brand new Word document.

 Get out your Works Cited handout example.

 Get out the worksheet you just completed.

To begin:

 Figure out which of your sources comes first alphabetically. Number them.

 For example,

H eller, Steven and Teresa Fernandes. Becoming a Graphic

Designer.

Canada: John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2002. Print.

Comes before

P litnik, George R. "Solar energy." Encyclopedia of Global

Resources . Ed. Craig W. Allin. 4 vols. Salem Press, 2010. Salem

Science Web. 27 Oct. 2011

Pull up your new Word doc.

*Save it in your home folder as “Works Cited

Page.”

1.

In your brand new Microsoft Word document, go to the “Home” tab at the top.

2.

3.

In the middle of the top, you will see a box that says “Paragraph” at the bottom.

Click on the little arrow in the lower right corner of that box.

A new box will pop up.

4.

5.

6.

7.

8.

In this new box, find the section that says “Indentation.”

In the “Indentation” section, find the box that says

“Special.”

Pull the dropdown menu under “Special” until it says

“Hanging.”

Then in the box that says “Spacing” change the spacing to “Double.”

Hit “OK” at the bottom of the box.

 Lost? Go to the next slide for a picture of where these things are.

Click on this tiny little box here to get the Paragraph box to pop up.

Here is the hanging indent box.

Here is the double space box.

9.

Now go back to the body of your document.

10.

Click on Center.

11.

Type the words Works Cited at the top of the page (don’t make yours red). Make sure you spell it right and it’s capitalized.

12.

Hit Enter once, and once only.

13.

Click on the left align button (un-center).

14.

Look at your 4 MLA citations on your worksheet. Based on the very first letter of the entry, which one comes first alphabetically? Start with that one.

15.

Type that entry EXACTLY the way it looks. Start with the last name of the author. Include all punctuation, italics, underlining, etc. DO NOT HIT ENTER while you type this entry. Keep typing the citation and it will automatically go to the next line for you using the hanging indentation you already set.

16.

AFTER you are done typing the first entry, hit ENTER once and once only.

17.

18.

Repeat steps 15 and 16 with your other three sources.

Make sure they are alphabetized.

Look at the example on the top of this page. Does yours look exactly like this? If not, fix it so it does.

Notice there are no extra spaces, and nothing is big or bold or underlined.

19.

When you are positive your page is absolutely perfect, print it out and bring it up to me. If it is not perfect, I will send you back. BE SURE!!!!
