Making Bio-fuels
By Sebastian Sandoval, Lorenzo Scott, & Marvin Aguirre
TAF Academy
Significance for study
Process
Lab Materials
In Simple Terms
-First we will ferment the
corn/sugar cane.
Bio-fuels are a very important issue
because petroleum is a fossil fuel which is
hurting the environment and are running
out. With creating bio fuels out of plants we
will have an greater sustainability.
Hydrometer
Research Question and
Hypothesis
-Will sugar cane ethanol or corn ethanol perform
the best in the RPM test?
- Because corn is a starch which is amore
complex sugar than sugarcane (disaccharide)
meaning it will yield the best RPM test because
there is more to burn
Design
IV: The two bio-fuels; corn and sugarcane
DV: The amount of RPMs we get for each of the bio-fuels
Constants:
-Engine
-Amount of each bio-fuel put into engine
Controls: Regular Gasoline on the engine to see if biofuels can compare
6.5 gallon
Plug Stopper
Amylase
Enzyme
Lab Set-up
Tachometer
-Then afterwards we will distill our
fermented corn/sugar cane at UW
Seattle
Our Next Steps
Currently we are in the fermenting process of our
corn and sugarcane
-Due to the long process to get permission to make
alcohol we were delayed
-We plan our distilling our alcohol to get a higher
concentration, then we will test the RPM’s
lawnmower
-Our main objective is Imagine Tomorrow
