Sophomore English Mrs. Fairman Macbeth: Act 1- Literary Terms (2016) Each of you will be placed into a group. In your groups, you will be assigned one of the following literary terms: Setting Plot Mood Characterization Theme Foreshadowing See the attached definitions of these literary terms. Then, as a group, create a poster that your group will share with the class (Everyone should plan to participate as equally as possible in this sharing). Poster work time = approximately half a class. Presenting the posters = approximately half a class. The poster should include the following information: 1. A definition of your literary term (you may use the definition that is given to you, shorten this original definition, or use your own words) 2. At least 3 quotes that are written accurately and cited correctly (act.scene.lines) from Act 1, in scenes 1, 2, and 3 of Macbeth that seem to demonstrate an application of your literary term (please ask me for help if this is difficult or confusing.) You may also use stage directions as “quotes” if they demonstrate your literary term. 3. A short explanation of each quote on the poster, bullet points are fine. Your group will explain the quotes in detail when you share your poster with the class. 4. Draw a picture of at least one of the quotes, or some sort of symbol (s) to represent the information / literary term that you will share with the class. Your symbol should be a focal point of the poster. Helpful notes: This is a group grade – a mini presentation. Equal participation of all group members is expected. When you present your information, explain your thinking and your quotes. You should give our class a clear understanding of how the quotes you chose demonstrate your literary term and the thinking behind the symbol your created. (10 points – group grade). If you are absent, you need to speak with me to complete a different activity to earn these participation points. And a hint – make your quotes easy to read and include the speaker; these posters will be a resource for you during upcoming quizzes / tests on the play Another hint – when you are listening to your classmates, ANNOTATE in your book the lines and literary terms and notes; this information will help you with assessments (tests, essays, final project, etc.) I expect that you will ANNOTATE in your book each day in class when we are discussing Macbeth – it will help you!!
