Your fingerprinting is good for 5 years from the initial date. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is an introduction to the development and organization of the American educational system and the education profession. It examines the historical, sociological, ethical and philosophical foundations of education. It requires 47 college classroom contact hours, plus 15 hours of Field Experience in a K-12 classroom under the supervision of a K-12 teacher who is certified in-field. This requires completion of a criminal offense review form (fingerprinting) as a condition for participation in the field experience component of the course. A student who has a criminal background precluding him or her from entering a classroom may not be able to complete the field experience and may not receive credit for this course. Field experience hours must be completed for a grade to be awarded. REQUIRED TEXT Teachers, Schools and Society, David M. Sadker, and Karen R. FIELD EXPERIENCE All students must complete 15 hours of field experience in a K-12 classroom with a certified teacher, who is teaching in her/his certified fields. We have an agreement with Pinellas County School District to place our students in classrooms for this experience. Students who wish to do their hours in a school other than Pinellas County School District must obtain special permission from the instructor. To be placed in a school, students must 1 be fingerprinted (level 2 required) and disclose whether they have even been arrested or charged with a criminal felony or misdemeanor, or if they have even been identified as a confirmed child abuser. When the student has been cleared through fingerprinting to enter a classroom, they will be placed in a Pinellas County school to do their Field Experience hours. This fingerprinting is good for 5 years. If the student does not pass this screening, the student will be withdrawn from the course and WILL NOT RECEIVE A TUITION REFUND. It is important to note that if a student does not pass fingerprinting, this may indicate that the student will be unlikely to receive a teaching certificate when they graduate NOTE: If you have ANY QUESTION AS TO WHETHER YOU WILL PASS THE FINGERPRINTING REQUIREMENT, or have even been arrested or charged with a criminal felony or misdemeanor, or if you have even been identified as a confirmed child abuser, it is recommend that you go through screening this semester and then enroll in this course next session. It often takes from 3 to 6 weeks to complete the screening process and if you do not pass fingerprinting, you will have to drop the course after the refund date. Tuition will not be refunded if you do not pass fingerprinting. If you are a dual enrolled or early college student, you may not do your hours in a high school setting. ATTENDANCE POLICY/ACTIVE PARTICIPATION Attendance will be taken at the start of class. If you are late, you will be marked absent. Students with perfect attendance will be awarded 5 points extra credit at the end of the semester. Each student is responsible for lectures missed due to absences. It is suggested that each student secure lecture notes from a student who attended the class. Students who are absent during post-test reviews will not receive extra points that may be awarded to those who participate. A copy of the college-wide attendance policy is included later in this syllabus. ACTIVE PARTICIPATION is defined as not having more than 2 absences per semester. If you miss class more than 4 times, you will be reported as not meeting the Active Participation requirement at the 60% attendance report. In very extreme circumstances, if a student misses more than 2 classes, a student may be permitted to remain in class if the student contacts the instructor and meets with the instructor in a timely manner to write a formal "Course Continuation Plan.” If the student is permitted to remain in class after the allotted 2 absences, 10 points will be deducted for each absence over the allotted 2 in this course. If a student misses more than 4 classes, they will be withdrawn. TARDINESS IS NOT ONLY RUDE; IT IS DISRUPTIVE TO THE INSTRUCTOR AND THE CLASS. If you come in late, you may be marked absent. Each two tardy arrivals will equal one absence. The instructor reserves the right to withdraw a student who is habitually tardy.
