Northwest Territories
• After the Revolution, Americans began settling the
Northwest Territory.
• US army was sent in to battle the Native Americans
and convince them to give up their land.
• In the Treaty of Greenville (1795), Native Americans
gave up parts of Ohio & agreed allow white
settlements at locations that would help with trade.
This led to white settlers taking more and more of the
NorthwestTerritory.
Florida
• Secretary of State John Quincy Adams
negotiated a treaty with Spain, giving Florida
to the United States.
• The US gave pieces of the Louisiana Purchase
to Spain to settle border disputes around
Mexico.
• Adams-Onis Treaty, signed in 1819.

Texas Independence
• Mexicans invited Americans to colonize the
land of Texas.
• Americans had to agree to certain things:
– surrender their American citizenship
– Swear allegiance to Mexico
– Adopt the Roman Catholic religion
– Hold the land for 7 years
– do not bring slaves with them
Texas Independence
• Many Americans did not honor the
agreement.
• Mexican government sent troops to occupy
Texas.
• Fighting erupted and the Mexicans were
winning until Santa Anna, the Mexican
President, was captured.
• The US and Mexico negotiated Texas
Independence from Mexico.

Gadsden Purchase
• Southerners wanted a railway to the west coast.
• The US government realized it would help the US
expand trade.
• The US govt purchased the land for $10 million
Oregon Territory
• Oregon was settled mostly by Americans but was
jointly owned by U.S. and G.B.
• Polk claimed “54ĚŠ° 40° or fight.” He basically told
Great Britain that the US would go to war with
them if GB didn’t hand over the land.
• Settled with a treaty that set the boundary at the
49th parallel, separating Canada and the US
Alaska
• The U.S. was looking to expand into the Pacific
Ocean.
• Russia was recovering from a war and offered
to sell Alaska to the U.S.
• The US govt thought it had potential for fur,
timber, and metals.
• Later, gold and oil were discovered.
